How do they check for the heartbeat when they are doing a transvaginal ultrasound? I had an u/s done last week but it was to early (5w3d) for the heartbeat. I am going back in tomorrow. My Dr. said he would look for a flickering for the heartbeat but it sounds like other people have gotten the actual heart rate at 6 weeks. Can he tell the heart rate by looking at the flickering or does he use an additional machine?
Hi Michellelynn,
We saw the heartbeat at 6 weeks 6 days, the heart was bigger than the baby! We were told that it was too early to hear anything.
It's a really exciting moment

I think that u/s machine is mesuring the heart rate...I went to my obgyn last week and the nurse had a little machine that had an ending like a stethoscope, but the other end had the monitor and speakers so I could actually hear the heart beat (it was 166 par minute and )...
I had my first u.s. at 5w4d and i could barely see a flicker of the heart, t,he baby looked like a tiny white line, like a grain of rice. They told me it was too early to measure the beats per minute.
I had my second one done yesterday at 7w6d and they were able to measure it this time 178 bpm. and we could really see it too! we still could not hear it though. They said to hear it that they had to use a doplar but it could be dangerous to the baby at this point.
Confusing stuff!

I hope you have heard the heartbeat by now!
We just saw the heartbeat in the early weeks and then when I was graduated to my OB at 10 weeks, his sonogram machine actually measured the heartbeat and we got to hear it for the 1st time then. It was amazing!
I think some machines are different, with us we have triplets so they look at the heartbeats every week. With a singleton, you may not have as many appts as I do.
