Back on the treadmill !!!

Post by KarenSmiff »

Hello !

Well a little about me (34) and DH (40) - DH had the snip for his first wife, had it reversed for me, but it now contains antibodies and wont get me preggers! We have had 5 goes at ICSI so far over the last 6 years (plus £20K spent) (1 abandoned go) and 3rd try was a positive (using only 1 x 2 Cell embie!) but unfortunately miscarried at 9wks. We have had a 2 year break - was adamant that enough was enough, but another go has been lingering in the back of my mind for the last 3 months or so ! I will need DE as I am a rubbish responder to stims, but that issue is fine with me/us. We hadnt mentioned it for months and months and on Sunday me and DH went out for a nice sunday lunch and he asked where I would like to go for next yrs hols, I replied with "Well....I have been thinking of having another IVF - " He then said that he had also been thinking the same for sometime, although didnt want to mention it incase I wasnt up for it ! So now I am sooo excited at the thought of another couple of goes (DE ICSI) next year.

Anyone else given up, then got back on the treadmill ?

Good luck to everyone.

Way to go Karensmiff!!! I think that is awesome that you and your DH are on the same page!! I sure hope it all goes well!

I am going to apologize in advance for my long posting but I wanted to pass along some info that my DH and I have collected during my IVF journey. We have been through 9 cycles (2 cancelled), 2 clinics and 3 RE - we are determined to make this work! We, like you, were originally told that our 'infertility' was just because of my DH having created sperm antibodies after his vasectomy - but that wasn't a problem because we were going to use ICSI.
We typically have great quality embryos and have transferred 3-day and 5-day embies and even transferred 4 embies at one point - still no luck. We have had 3 chemical pregnancies so I can get pregnant but for some reason can't stay pregnant.
After attempt number 7 my DH got on the web and started to do research. He found a study that indicated that men who had a reasonably long period of time between their vasectomy and reversal had a high % of sperm fragmentation. We then researched sperm fragmentation and found that anything above 30% fragmentation is considered poor fertility potential. In our review appointment after the 7th attempt we raised this and asked for the test. It came back that my DH had 50% sperm fragmentation.
This may not be the sole cause of our repeated failures but it has given us a piece of the puzzle. I am a poor responder and was ready to get donor eggs (thinking that was why it wasn't working) and then we found this out.
This last round (I am in my 2ww right now) we used donor sperm on my 4 mature eggs retrieved and had 3 fertilized and transferred.
I yet can't tell you how this story ends but wanted to pass along the info on the sperm fragmentation test - it was painless and took 2 weeks to get the results.
Best of luck to you!
