How many follicles is average / good?

Post by a&p »

Hi Ladies

Just been for my first scan to check how many follicles i've got after a week of being on Menopur. I've got 6 in total. Sizes are - 14, 14, 14, 14, 8, 6. My lining is nice and thick. Doctor said everything is looking good. Need to go on Friday for another scan and they are planning ER for Tuesday.

I know the lead follicle needs to be between 18 - 22mm and i've still got a couple more days on the Menopur but i'm worried that i'm only going to end up with 4 mature follicles as i can't see the 8 and 6 catching up.

Feeling abit down at the moment. Do you think there's a chance of there being more follicles by Friday or is that my lot? (My Menopur dose has not been changed.) And what are the chances of the 8 and 6 follicles catching up? Worried that if i go to ER with only 4 mature follicles i could end up with no eggs to transfer

If i've only got the same amount on Friday i will talk to my consultant about my concerns but he seems happy at the moment.

Don't you worry. It's amazing how quickly everything grows. If you have 6 now thats great. Last IVF treatment I only got 3. Keep the chin up and remember each try is something different no 2 will be the same. My first shot I had 9. Two were put in then they told me only 5 could be frozen. The second time only 3 made it with none to freeze. I just started my third attempt. But your numbers are fine. When you go on Friday your 14's will more then likely be 20's I know it's only a couple of days but that's what happens. Your 8 & 6's will be around your 14 but remember by the time Tuesday comes everything more then likely will be way up there. Good luck:) :D

a&p--- i will tell you the EXACT words out of my RE's mouth when i was at exactly the same stage as you......only looking at 4 follies :? I had all the same concerns and doc says "what are you worried about - you have exactly enough to do the job we need to do"........hadn't thought about it like that until he presented that way......and sure enough - retrieved 4 PERFECT eggs......got 100% fertiliztion w/ ICSI..... and put 2 perfect embies back.......unfortunately for me - ended in chem preg :(

but DON'T give up hope.......4 is still a really great number!!!!

GOOD LUCK TO YOU GIRL!!!!!  *********GROW FOLLIES GROW*********

Hi A&P,
I don't know that a higher # of follicles is necessarily a guarantee of success. I've been through 2 IVF's & 2 FET's. Both IVF's I ended up with about 20 follicles. BUT I haven't had a BFP yet. :( Now my MD thinks that maybe I've been "overstimulated" which has made my uterus lining more irritable. Next cycle I'm going to be on a "flare" cycle with no lupron until a microdose of lupron with the stims. I've been told to expect less follicles, but hopefully more receptive uterus. We'll see how it goes...

PS. with 20 follicles I felt like my ovaries were going to burst and I had mild OHSS with the 1st IVF. I can't imagine what it must be like for the women who post that they had 30+ follicles! It must be terrible, and also I'm not seeing that they have any higher rate of success(I suppose they probably do, but who knows?) I remember when I first went to IVF class, the nurse running it made it sound like every cycle would produce tons of eggs, but I think that was part of the sales pitch.
Best of luck to you! Remember it just takes one.

Hi Ladies

Just a quick update. Went for my 2nd scan today. I have now got 8 follies and some smaller ones. The one's that were counted measure - 19, 19,19, 18, 18, 17, 11 and 10. My lining is 10 (Assume this is good?) and my ER is Monday 7.30am.

So much happier today :D

Oh yes, the follie that i thought was 6 was actually 13. Don't ask me how i mistook a 13 for a 6

One last thing. The nurse has told me to take the HCG shot using the same needles i've been using for the Menopur injections. And to take it in my thigh. These needles are small and i always thought this injection needed to go into the muscle in the bum. The nurse from the hospital where i'll be having the retrieval and transfer done will be ringing me tomorrow with a time to take the shot but just thought i'd ask here.

YEAH!!!!!! nothing better than seeing those follies grow!!! far as the HCG goes ----- my nurse was VERY specific about being intramuscular w/ one of the "bigger" needles  in the bum.......if i were you - i would call them back --- just tell 'em you've been doing "online research" ( ) and everything you see says "IM in the bum".......?????

GOOD LUCK!!! :D

Did as you suggested and just phoned and spoke to different nurse. Told her i was just double checking that the HCG was to be taken exactly like my Menopur and not in the muscle with a larger needle like i'd read  She said to take it exactly the same way, with the small needle in my thigh and that it doesn't have to be taken in the muscle. Well i guess she must know

Keep your fingers crossed for me

Last update.

Had 5 eggs retrieved yesterday from 8 follies. Today i found out that 3 of them weren't even good enough to have a sperm injected into them and the other 2 didn't fertilise so i'm left with none to transfer. To say i'm absolutely gutted is an understatement

I know we can try again in January but you put so much hope into your first attempt it's heartbreaking when it ends in a BFN and even more so when you don't even get to transfer
