Heart shaped uterus and IVF??

Hi ladies,

I just have a quick question. My RE says I have a "heart shaped uterus". I was wondering if anyone has gone through IVF and it was successful with this uterine abnormality. Anyway, my RE said she would just aim the embies to either side rather than the center during the transfer. Anyone with a similar situation?

Heart shaped, sounds like a lovable room for a baby!

Mine's tipped, which is pretty common...
My guess is that your RE would not put embies in if she didn't think your uterus could sustain a pregnancy...

Why not ask her if there's research on such a uterine shape? Or go to PubMed or other medical research search engines and read about this...

Hi! I have a heart shaped uterus as well... its called a bicornuate uterus ( i think thats the way its spelled). I finished my first complete ivf cycle on june15th and am now pregnant with twins.
The main problem with this type of uterin anomaly is that the baby grows in just one side or "horn" or the other. My first child was conceived naturally and the only issue was that she was 6 weeks premature. ( perfectly healthy otherwise tought).
anyway, I think you will and should be considered higher risk for premature labor but otherwise you will probably be fine.
My twins are growing in the left horn and other than being on limited activity and being watched a little more carefully .. everything else is normal.
Years ago when it was first discovered that i had this... i was told i would never be able to carry a baby to term... luckily that doctor was wrong. of course that was 18 years ago when i was a very young teenager!

Hi! I also had a heart shaped uterus. It is considered a "variant of the norm" and also called "arcuate". It's a much mch milder form of say "bicornate" uterus. It turns out mine was caused by a small septum they FINALLY found on hysteroscopy. This is something I would ask your RE directly about. I had seen 2 other RE's both highly referred and both did not check the uterus directly. Only did a hysterosalpingogram - dye in the uterus under xray. This will only find larger septums. Mine was small/med. I had a long hx of mc's - 4, and bled during hte 1st tri of my last pregnancy. My current RE attributed much of those prob's to the septum. He did a quick procedure and the septum is gone and now I'm pregnant with twins - no bleeding or problems Also, my uterus is no longer heart shaped becaue the fibrous septum is what was pulling on the center. Anyway, you may have no septum at all, it's just that studies show a septum - even only a remnant - can significantly increase mc risk and it's so nice to know for sure.

Either way, I gave birth to a full term baby with my heart shaped uterus before having hte septum removed. So, heart shaped is definately not a contraindication with IVF or pregnancy. Huge luck and tons of babydust to you!!

I've also got a heart shaped or arcuate uterus and am currently 34 weeks pregnant, there is a slightly increased riskof preterm labour (but ok so far!) and a risk of the baby being breech, which mine is - in fact its in a hammock position, head in one horn, bottom down and feet in the other. Therefore am looking at a c section but quite frankly whatever is best for the baby. My doctor said that most people with an arcuate or bicornate uetrus don't find out until they have to have a c section and that it shouldn't cause any problems with actualy getting pregnant nor in the first two trimesters.

ps I was having IVF ICSI due to male factor infertility, the arcuate uterus was found out just as part of routine testing and they don't think its in any way related to fertility problems.

sorry just remembered one more thing, its recommended that you get your kidneys scanned as malformation of the mullerian duct (arctuate or bicornate uterus) can be related to some form of kidney malformation. Not usually a problem but best to check. I had mine scanned and they're fine, if you've never had any problems yours probably are too.
