B-feeding moms. . when did you start AF?

Post by kholtan »

Sorry about the TMI topic but when did you mothers that are breastfeeding start your period? I am 7.5 weeks into exclusively breastfeeding my twins and about a week and a half ago I seem to have started my period. It's very light but I was hoping to go for a year w/o it. I never had a period before that lasted over 4 days either.  What to do!

Hi there,

Congratulations on the twins :-) and well done even more for breast feeding them exclusively! :-) :-) I don't know how you manage....

My wee man was about 7 months when mine returned - I was only feeding about twice or so by then. I think everyone is different though. Some get it back quickly others don't get it until they stopped completely.

There's no rhyme nor reason I'm afraid.

Take it easy

Kholtan,

I have been breastfeeding my Andrew and he is 7 months 3 weeks old. My AF has not yet returned. I am nursing him around 6 times a day, but I also pump once or twice a day. Like Zoe said, everyone is different. My friend is still nursing her 18 month old and her AF has not yet returned. I thought she might be pregnant, but her HPT was neg.

Regards,
Tammy

Hi, I am breastfeeding my 7 month old son. I feed him 3 times a day and express once a day too. My AF returned when he was 3 months old! I was hoping that it would stay away longer, but no joy there!

It seems to be different for each person

Good luck

I breastfed my twins (and supplemented with formula as needed) until last week (sad) which was 12.5 months. I got AF at 10 months. At that time I was BFing twice a day and pumping twice a day. My friend just got AF and her baby is 4 months old and she's exclusively BFing.

could it still be a little post baby bleed... i know that i had spotting on and off for 8-9 weeks... maybe it was just a little still left over from the birth??

otherwise i'm almost been feeding for 5 months and just got AF two days ago.... i think cuz my son was not eating as much (teeth coming in)

so take care, and maybe it won't come back again for awhile!!

Kholton,

I am sorry to tell you, I am on my third exclusively breastfeed baby and all my AFs returned within 6-8weeks of the baby. I start off light and it steadily returns to normal over the next 4-5 months. My daughter is 4 months old and I am on my third AF. However, I have very normal AF (except that they are coming every 24-25 days  ). I am pre-menopausal though and I always have my endometriosis removed during my c-sections to help with the bleeding and pain. I hope you are not as lucky as me, but breastfeeding does not seem to have any effect on my afs.

BTW - Congrats on BFing twins! You are a great woman!

Hi kholton,
My baby is 3 months old today and no period yet (thank goodness!). I am mostly breastfeeding (he gets 4 oz. formula per day).

Thanks so much for all the helpful insight. We'll just have to wait and see if it returns next month or not. I guess we get what we get in this situation!

Thanks again everyone!
