Refusing solids

Post by AMck »

Hi all, wonder if anyone can help....

Matthew has been a very good eater. He has, for the past 5 weeks, been eating 3 meals a day. Savoury and sweet at each sitting. He wolfed it all down. He would eat porridge, vegetables, meat, yoghurt, fruit etc...Plus he would have his milk from me at the same time.

However for the past 4 days he has refused to open his mouth and eat anything from the spoon. He is still b/fed 3 times a day but hasn't had anything else proper to eat. He will happily chomp on a rice cake or piece of fruit, but I don't think he actually swallows anything. If I'm quick with the spoon I can get some food in as he tries to feed himself. He swallows it then, so he likes the taste. I've also tried putting the food on a strip of bread/piece of fruit etc.. to see if it is the spoon he doesn't like, but that didn't work either!

He is still sleeping well and doesn't seem unwell, but he is eating so little and so much less than before.................... any thoughts anyone?

Thanks

Hi Anna
Sorry this has to be quick it is normal for bubs to through phases where they'll drink more than they eat and at times not to drink much either. Has mathew had a growth spurt lately he may have been eating lots beforehand like you said because he was going to have a growth spurt he may also be refuseing foods now due to his teeth coming through. You'll find that some babies go through phases where they are given somehting the really like and thats all they will eat for a while my Ds had a thing for potatoes where he would eat anything unless it had potatoes and also dry biscuits at one stage it is very fustrating thinking are they getting enough of everything quantity and nutrition.

I guess if your really concerned get him checked out with the doctor i would just suggest to keep an eye on his weight to make sure he isn't loosing any and to keep offering him a variety of food.

good luck

Jomae, thank you for replying to my message. Matthew was fine until Saturday night, then has come down with a heavy cold/cough...maybe this was why he was off his food?? Who knows!

He is still smiling and sleeping so will just keep an eye on him and hopefully this phase will pass soon and he will be back on his solids.

Thanks again for your message
hope all is Ok with you
Take care

Hi Anna!

We've found that Charlie goes through phases of not really wanting anything to eat, or seeming to go off things he previously enjoyed. Usually we can work out (afterwards!) what it was - whether it be a cold / teeth (this is the most common) / tummy bug etc. but sometimes we can't figure it out! He just suddenly doesn't seem to want what he previoulsy did? Usually it just passes and he soon goes back to normal.

I have found though that as Charlie changes so does his eating habits. He never used to like finger foods but soon after he discovered that rice cakes weren't so bad he went off "real" food (especially at lunch) and went through a phase of having sandwiches etc. I was convinced he wasn't getting enough food but they tell me a child will let you know if they are hungry and not to worry! He just wanted to use his new found skill. We're now trying self feeding with all meals and I have to say he's done really well (even gets some in his mouth occasionally!) but I've noticed in the past few days how he won't eat unless he is doing the majority of the feeding!

Sounds like Matthew was just feeling under the weather. Apart from that he sounds like he's coming along like a dream!

Great to hear from you! Take care

Cla

Hi Clare, good to hear from you. Thanks for replying to my message. It is reassurring to know that others have experienced the same thing.

How is Charlie? I bet he is an absolute delight. Do post some details...would love to hear more about him.

Matthew is an angel. Even now, whilst he is under the weather fighting a chest infection, he is still smiling and playing. I do wish he would eat more though. He is only having 3 feeds a day. He will drink a lot of milk but is still not interested in any food....finger food/pureed/yoghurt etc...anything. I know that he isn't getting enough to eat because he has started waking up in the middle of the night for a feed, he hasn't done that for months!

Ah well, hopefully this phase will pass soon and I can go back to getting a full nights sleep! Was planning on stopping/cutting back breastfeeding soon but this chest infection has delayed things. Did you b/f? If so,when did you cut down and stop?

Bye for now

Sorry to take so long to reply! i'm sure, like me, you don't find as much time to come on here anymore!

Charlie is doing great thanks! He has been walking for some time and is now trying his hand at running. It's so funny as his legs and his body can't keep up with each other! He's really very active (always has been really!) and likes nothing better than climbing (on anything!) and investigating things. he-he!

He has now a total (we think!) of 13 teeth. I say we think as it's becoming rather dangerous to put your finger in his mouth
He usually gets quite crabby for a night (and goes off his food!) when cutting a tooth so we usually know when a new one is about to pop through! oh and it's the only time he gets nappy rash too :(

Words are still rather unrecognisable although we have a good grasp of Mumma and Dadda as well as ta (as in thank you!) and ba ba (as in good-bye!!) Although he can't say it, he can point to Mummys nose, ears, mouth and eyes although I admit that doesn't always get them the right way round! Also responds very well to questions (for instance - where is the hoover - he'll go straight to the cupboard. Shall we have a bath - stands at the bottom of the stairs waiting for me to move the gate and then he legs it upstairs to the bathroom!) So I know he's understanding the words very well, just needs to practise saying them!!! It's just so much fun watching him learning new skills!

Matthew sounds like such a happy chappy! Like you say even when feeling poorly. Bless him! I do go over to photobucket now and then and see the pictures - so cute!!!!!!!! Hope that his appetite has improved? As I say Charlie can be very changeable sometimes with regards to food and can either eat like a sparrow or a horse!!! I have to say though when I cut down his milk intake he changed dramatically and suddenly started to eat finger foods, snacks, larger portions, drink juice etc. I had kept him on 4 feeds for too long I think and it wasn't filling him up. I then cut down to 3 and finally took the plunge and cut it down to just 2 feeds a day (morning and bedtime) and his sleeping improved tenfold too (it had got better when we weaned him but started to deteriorate as time went on - I think as he wasn't full enough).

Oh, sorry I realise I didn't answer your Bf question!! Yes I did BF although I stopped at 5 and a half months as Charlie was starting nursery for 2 days a week and I felt it would be better if he had been weaned onto bottle only by then. Have to say I missed it like mad (and my big BBs!!!!) but it was the right thing to do. Am now in the process of weaning him off the bottle! There always seems to be something!!!!

Anyhow I hope things have improved for you. It may be worth thinking about perhaps cutting down the amount he has say at lunchtime to see if this encourages the eating? Unless he's back to normal that is!!

Right - must go and do some work!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice to hear from you

Hi Clare, lovely to hear all about Charlie. He sounds ab fab!

We are fine. Still not eating much though, so today we haven't given him any solids/finger food at lunchtime and hope he will eat more at teatime....watch this space.

I was hoping to start cutting back on breastfeeding very soon. Maybe drop the lunchtime milk from me and introduce a feeder cup. Any hints on how? When we tried before all Matthew did was scream until I fed him myself, then he got ill so I gave up........do I need to be really tough? I hate to think of it as the 'battle of the feeder cup'!!! Any advice greatly recieved.

Am in the process of negotiating my return to work in March. Have asked to go back 4 days a week. Should find out in a couple of weeks if my proposal has been accepted. Fingers crossed. Do you work full time? Are you pleased with the Nursery Charlie goes too? How did you decide on where to send him? Sorry, soooooooooo many questions

Glad all is well with you. All the IVf stuff seems like a different life, more like a dream doesn't it? Everyday I count my blessings, still can't quite believe he is here!

Bye for now

Hi Anna,

I usually don't read anything else other than over 40 crowd forum. Today, I just had a glance at each group and found your name and read your last few posts about Matthew's eating habits. Hope that you don't mind that my butting in.

Eloise did the same thing and then we found she just did not like to be fed, she even did not like to be fed with bottled milk! I agree with Cla, the babies are discovering the newly found skills. Eloise has not gained much weight after teething, she only weights 20lbs at 9 months check up - she was in fact 9m1w old then. She rejected baby food (smashed food) since 6m and starts to like chewing with her gums - to deal with the feeding problem, I smashed food (meat/fish and rice/pasta) and reform them into small balls, so that she can pick up by herself and swallow, in this case, I could feed 3~4 oz solid food at least once a day - she eats at daycare for lunch, but I don't know how much she actually eats there.

About cutting down breastfeeding, I slowed down gradually. Eloise prefers breastfeeding and she always actively looks for breasts which breaks my heart. But my milk quality lowered after the AF showed up at 6m, so I started to supply formula to her since she needs the calcium in the milk for teeth. Books say that you can give babies cheese for the calcium, but Eloise has hard time to swallow cheese, it stick to her throat and chock her somehow. In the last three months, she has increased the amount of formula from 4~8oz/day to 20 oz per day, but decreased breast milk from ~24oz/day to 4~6 oz/day. I still have not completely stopped the breastfeeding yet. I plan on doing that after she reaches 1 yr, if I the milk will not dry out by then.

Again, apologize for butting in and hope everything is fine with Matthew soon.

Thanks Yasmina, I like the idea of rolling food into small balls so it can be picked up with litle fingers!

Matthew is eating more now but doesn't drink much. I breastfeed him morning and evening and he doesn't have much liquid in between. The Dr isn't worried. I'm sure all will turn out Ok. You think all is going well and it all changes!!

Matthew likes to eat cheese, so I can keep his calcium levels up, but only Edam! They are funny creatures these babies aren't they?

Glad to hear Eloise is OK. I saw her picture on a thread and she looks absolutely beautiful.

Thanks again for replying, take care
