For those with no insurance - tax deduction?

Post by boonie »

I just spoke to an office manager about IVF costs, this would be my 3rd attempt (hopefully last!) She mentioned that you can deduct uncovered medical expenses like this off your taxes. The last two cycles were covered under an HMO but I switched employers with no coverage.

I know my tax preparer usually does ask about medical expenses, is this worth putting it on as a deduction?

Hi Boonie,
I'm also starting my 3rd ivf, unfortunately we've had to pay out of pocket for all. The tax deduction is great. It should help unless you make too much $.
Good luck with your next cycle!

It is so worth the deduction on taxes. YOu can claim anything above 7 1/2% of your medical costs--i believe(each state might be different). So say you make 10000 a year the first 750 dollars you spend on medical costs you can't claim but the rest you can. If you do use IVF as a deduction make sure to keep track of your miles to and from the doctor (for any visit for the year-for each family member)as you can include those under medical costs--i am not sure what the rate is this year i think it was maybe 14cents last year but it adds up when you are going to the doctor everyday for awhile during your cycle. Also you can include your parking fees if your clinic charges for parking.
GOod luck this cycle i hope the 3rd one is the charm.
