Going for Egg Retrieval soon and only a few follies. Help!!

Post by ARG »

I had my 10 day scan this morning. This is my 2nd IVF attempt. They said I would most probably go in for retrieval on Thursday. However I only have 6 follies 1 at 10, 2 at 15, 1 at 16 and 2 between 17 and 19. I am really concerned that this isnt going to work again as such a low yeild and their size. This is my 2nd and final attempt so I am feeling pretty emotional. Any advise, stories to give me hope????? Good luck to everyone. xx

I am never a good responder--I get less than you--usually about 3 or 4 mature eggs total. The first 2 times I got fertilization, the 3rd time no fertilization and the 4th time fertilization. So, think quality and not quantitiy is better..... Good luck

Angela, good luck with the ER on Thursday! I am sure you will do great. Keep the faith...everyone says you only need one, and there's lots of proof of that. I'll be thinking of you...keep us posted on how you did.

lots of luck!!!

My doctor this time said it is better to have less eggs and better quality. He was right too. My first IVF (different doctor) over stimulated me (didn't know this til later) and they were able to get 16 eggs (9 fertilized but none to freeze), but, I got a BFN. I went to a new doctor and he didn't over stimulate me and was able to get 9 great eggs. They all fertilized in which I was able to have 2 top grade put back in with 4 more to freeze...and I got a BFP!!!!!!!!! So, just remember it's not the number but the quality!

Good Luck!

ARG,

Quick response to your post. Sounds like you have a good amount of follies. On my day 10 scan, things weren't looking as promising as I'd hoped and they kept me stimming for a few extra days (the size of follies were a bit slow to grow to start with) and by the day 12/13 scan, they had increased dramatically. By ER I had 22 eggs and got 7 to blastocyst. Sadly for me resulting in a BFN (chem pregnancy).

So don't give up on yourself! My sister in law only ever got a few follies, 3 eggs at most and both times BFP with a day 3 transfer - go figure! You are in the race girl.

Good luck and thinking of you,

Well Angela, I'm with ya on this slow responder thing. I just got back from my day 12 u/s. I still only have 4 follies. One is at 17, one still 10 and 2 are only 8. I'm still on 3 menopurs per night, gonal-f in the morning, and started granilix last night. I go back on Wed for another u/s. The frustration is really starting to take a toll on me now. And I'm running out of patience. The good news is, there is still talk of a retrieval, just don't know when yet. Here's my concern...if the little guys don't catch up, will they try to retrieve just the one big one? Or, will they let that one get too mature and hope that the others will eventually be ready for retrieval? I understand that once they get too mature, they won't fertilize. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

I'd die and go to heaven if I got six follies. I got two this cycle, and only one fertilised, but I got a grade 1 emby out of it. My doctor said, "You could have had ten, and only one might have looked as good as this." So don't worry. I've done a lot of research on poor responders (funny how our expertise grows during the 2ww!) and you are definitely NOT one - six follies is well within normal limits.

I HATE it when people say this to me, and I can't believe I'm going to do it, but...

you only need one!

I am a slow responder--usually they only get 3 or 4 mature eggs everytime. 3 out of the 4 times they got fertilized, but I don't think they were good quality eggs.

As far as what a clinic will do before they cancel ivf for lack of response, I think it depends on the clinic. The clinic I am at now won't even do an e/r unless there are 3 mature eggs. In the past, I've been on meds for about 14 days total before they told me to take my ovidrel. I think they go by the bigger eggs, not the smaller ones.

Good luck to you all.

Hi, Well I have gone through all the moves now. Finally got 6 mature eggs out of 8 follicles as it turned out. 5 Eggs fertilised using ICSI. Transferred two good embryos (Between Grade 1/2) but unfortunately the other three left were not good enough to freeze. I had a two day transfer and the embryos had cleaved to a four cell and a two cell with no fragmentation to be seen. What are the chances. I took it easy the first day after transfer but I am up and about now, no strenuous exercise but I am doing normal chores like preparing dinner etc. Just getting DH to do the lifting for me.

Good Luck
