Progesterone: Caps or Shots?

Post by RoseBaby »

This time my RE prescribed vaginal caps, and I am worried that they may not be as effective. Back in my first IVF (with injected Progesterone during the 2ww) I felt more of the side effects while this time I don't really feel anything. I would like to know from your experiences which method are you using and which is more effective.

Hi Rosebaby this is my 6th cycle and I am now 5 weeks pregnant and I have always used caps but you are right you do not expierence the side effects like those who inject. As I have got a positive for me they obviously help.

Good luck and baby dust to you.

Hi Rosebaby, in the UK most clinics use the caps, as there is no evidence that shots are better, my clinic will provide shots if you wish, but are more expensive.
Also on a fresh cycle we do produce progesterone, they only prescribe it as a precaution as too much cannot hurt.
I have done 3 Frozen cycles where progesterone is neccessary and have had a BFP ever time, i am currently 5 weeks pregnant.
Good luck to you.

I have done both. the first re I had really liked the supp. so I had to use them 3 times a day. There was some whitish discharge from it.... This RE likes the shots. I am unsure which I like more---the shot is only once a day, but if the person who administers it isn't around, it's a pain. Also, if you are out, I think the supporitories would be easier to do....

I've been using the vaginal suppositories 3 times a day and have a BFP today! My beta is 76. They also checked estrogen and progesterone levels and said they were all great so I think the vaginal way must work OK.

Many doctors prefer injections. They work well.

Most patients prefer vaginal delivery methods. These have been shown to work well, too.

hi rosebaby

i've only ever used caps (in both my cycles) and as you can see i'm now 18 weeks pregnant. the other thing you might find, which varies from clinic to clinic is how long you should carry on using the caps/shots if you get a BFP. for me, i only used the caps for the 2ww and once i got my BFP they got me to stop right away. and everything is still well....however, some clinics ask you to continue until up to 3 months. so dont worry if you hear different stories!

good luck!!

Hi everyone!

Thank you for answering my question. I went this morning for my beta and I'm getting desperate to know my result. I'll keep you all posted.
