Been to midwife today Being sent for another scan

Post by bubblymichelle »

Hi Everyone

Well I thought I would let you know I have been to see my midwife today.

When I walked in through the door she said are we sure your not having twins .

I am having to be sent now for another scan for the simple reason she examined me and said I am either carrying a lot of water I am having a big baby. I said well if this is the case do I have anything to worry about? she said no providing I don't feel ill in myself then all will be ok but they will have to keep a close eye on me. She is also concerned because she said if I am carrying a lot of water which she seems to think I am she said she wants to make sure the baby is growing ok. She said that she wants to make sure the baby is measuring to how he/she should be. I said well how about if the baby isn't what would happen. She said well if it was because the placenta wasn't giving the baby nourishment and the baby wasn't growiing they wouldn't want me to carry on they would want me to give birth. I was quite shocked with this because I am only 28 weeks.

I asked my midwife what she thought and she said that she seems to think I am carrying alot more water then normal. The growth chart though indicates that I am out the measurements I should be 28.5 and I am measuring in at 30.5 so this is why she is sending me for a scan which I will get on Friday.

She also said that the baby is breech and I said well is this anything to worry about and she said no because I have up to 36 weeks for the baby to go into the head down position.

I do worry and I just can't wait for Friday to come now, she said try not to worry but she just wants to be on the safe side with everything we have been through.

I just hope and pray all is ok!!

Love
Shell.
xx
Hi Shell

God, what a day for you! Your mind must be boggling as to what's what! If the midwife isn't unduly concerned and just wants to check stuff out, then try not to worry (yeh, right!!!!), she'll know what she's looking for. Can you imagine if after all this time it was twins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take care

Love

Rachel
x

Thanks for your messages, yeah I have to wait till Friday next week to have it done. I did ask if I could have it done early but she wants me to see Mrs Reddy who is my consultant at the hospital, she said she is the one who is looking after me so would prefer me to go there + she is very good so I will wait. I know the time is going to drag but I am trying my hardest not to worry. I know the baby is ok because I do feel him/her moving about its just the fact now is the baby big or am I carrying alot of water. If my midwife was that concerned she would of sent me yesterday as an emergency I guess. She does tend to think its water because I had to have my wedding ring cut off and my ankles swole so I am keeping my fingers crossed she is right.
Luv
Shell.
28wks 2d pg
xx

Hi Shell

You poor thing, swollen hands and feet, sounds like a classic case of water retention.

At least the movements keep your mind at rest, so roll on Friday when you will know just how big the baby is.

Thinking of you, try not to worry too much.

Feet elevated and take care,

D x

The baby is still breech but the midwife says this is ok because I have uptil 36 weeks for the baby to turn. Hi Shell,
What a worry for you - how was the weekend? You're right that the midwife would have had you scanned there and then if she'd been really worried -so I'm sure she wants to check things out just to be on the safe side!
Let us know how you get on on Friday.
Di

Hi Shell

You poor thing but like you and the others have said I am sure that if your midwife had been very concerned you'd have been scanned a lot sooner. Water retention can make you swell and look a lot further than what you are actually are.
Take it easy till friday (sure you wont!)
LOL
Emma
x
Shell - Just seen this as I was off last week with a cold.
I know there's nothing I can say to stop you worrying but I'm sending you loads of hugs and love. I'm sure the delivering at 28 weeks is absolutely worst case scenario, and your consultant will be the best one to advise - my mother in law is a midwife and she is such a bloody doom and gloom merchant you wouldn't believe it. I am sure your midwife is being rightly cautious, but don't get yourself all stressed that you'll be delivering next week as I am sure that is only the last resort. Consultants see all sorts of complicated cases and they are really the experts, so I'm sure she'll put your mind more at rest and put things more in perspective at the scan.

If it was that serious like the girls say you would have been whipped in immediately.

I know you'll still be worrying, but that won't do you or your little one any good so try to be calm and relax - your baby is fine and I'm sure you'll be completely reassured on Friday.

Jo - just a quick note to say best of luck for the 20 week scan on Wednesday.
lots of love to shell and everyone else,
Sally xxx
(26 + 3)
Me - severe endo, DH - poor sperm. First IVF ICSI Nov 02 neg. Second IVF/ICSI May 03 Positive.

Thanks everyone for your messages to be honest I am doing quite well with not getting stressed like Sally says it doesn't do me or the baby any good so I am just trying to get on and just wait for Friday. I will certainly let you know how Friday goes. Sally is your cold any better now.
Luv
Shell.
28wks 4d pg
xx

Shell,

Similar to what happened to me, I did have severe water retention and other problems and was whipped in and gave birth at 29 weeks to my two. So from one who has been there....it doesn't sound like there is any reason to panic, if you really did have severe water retention (odema) you would be in hospital by now. It is definately a precaution to give you an extra scan. And even if God forbid you do deliver early as long as it is after 28 weeks the chances of survival are really really good. My two are now nearly 18 months (corrected age 15 months) and are thriving and worth all this worry. I am away after this morning till Tuesday next week, but will try and log in at home over the weekend to see how it goes. But please take heart from one who has been there. It is a worry but they prefer to be overcautious and that scan should reassure you that everything will be fine....mind you if it is a big baby....get thinking about the epidural now!!!!

Big Hugs
Nicky

Nicky,

Thanks so much for your post it does mean alot to know someone else has been through what I may have to go through. I am just waiting for Friday now which is not so far away. My midwife does think its alot of water and she said providing I feel well in myself then she is ok she is just going to make sure that everything is ok. I know that if the baby is still breech I will have to have a C Section but providing me & Baby are well then I will do anything. I wasn't going to have an epidural I was just going to opt for gas and air and then pethadine if I needed it but like you say Nicky if the baby is big then I will have whatever they offer.

Luv
Shell.
28wks 5d pg
xx
