I did IVF #5 and had e/t on 11/12. On 11/26, I went in for pregnancy test and the number was extremely low--less than 3. I was told that normally anything under 5 was negative. They had me go back on Wed. 11/28 and it went up to 5.69. Again I was told the number was very low and they cautioned me about an etopic pregnancy or that it would not be a viable pregnancy. They had me go back on Friday 11/30 it was up to about 11.??? I was told to stop progestrone and again cautioned about etopic pregnancy and told to come back today. I was told the number was in the 20's (I thought she said it was 27.?). I was told that the number plateaued as it should be higher numbers and she said that it should have double to 22 then to 44. tI need to go in again Thurs. morning for more blood work and possibly be prescribed a drug (starts w/ an m) that's for chemo. I started spotting on thursday and Thurs and Friday I had cramping. Now, I apologize for TMI, but at some point on Friday afternoon, seemed like a clump of something came out, but the cramping stopped. The bleeding increased a little on Friday and Sat. and had some bleeding on Sunday. But nothing gushing out like a regular period.
Does this sound like a chemical pregnancy or will it just turn into regular miscarriage? The nurse isn't too great at explaining things and said she would go into more details on thurs after the blood work, but I have my primary care physican physical on Thursday afternoon. I probably won't be around to receive the call and w/ the way this doctor's office gets backed up, probaby won't be home in enough time to call back if I should have any questions. Will I get a regular period again or was this bleeding my period?
I can totally relate to your situation. We completed our first IVF in September and I had a similar situation. My numbers were 1.04; 4.79; 25; and 174. At that point, my doctor took me off the PIO shots and said that I was "probably" pregnant but it was not viable. AF started for me a few days later. If I could do things differently, I would have insisted on staying on the PIO and demanding an ultrasound if my numbers kept rising and I would have gone off the meds until my numbers were dropping. There is so much the doctors don't know about what goes on and the beta numbers are not the end-all for information. The doctors do not know exactly what and when things happen and there are grey areas....and as long as your numbers are rising, something is happening and I wouldn't give up until you feel you are ready. I wish I would not have given up so soon and stayed on my meds and waited to see what would have happened.....

They took me off the prog. shot on Fri. so since Friday, I have not taken any meds. It's a little confusing because my number are rising, but then they keep telling me that I could be having an etopic pregnancy--although they have been telling me that since Wed--or it's not viable. This is the first time it kind of sort of worked. I don't know what to do because the 2 clinics I've been to just don't seem like they care all the much.
Thanks for telling me your story. I think they are just worrying me needlessly?
How many weeks along are you? What are your numbers now since you went off the hormones? Are you saying your HCG numbers are still rising after being taken off of hormones and have had a slight period? If your at least 5 or 6 weeks along and still increasing in HCG numbers ( the numbers normally double to triple every 2 to 3 days.) you should request an ultrasound. At 5 weeks a pregnancy should be visable and at 6 weeks a heart beat. If an ultrasound is done and the is no visable sign of pregnancy then you can put your mind at rest that it was a non viable pregnancy, and if the numbers still are increasing with no visual uterine sign of pregnancy than you are most likely looking at an ectopic pregnacy.
It sounds like you had a period even how slight and there most likely would no longer be a pregnancy vaible or non viable. I know the sadness I went through the low HCG levels too. MYy heart goes out to you. I've learned that when HCG levels are low and not at least doubling every 24 to 36 hours it is more indicative that there is something genetically wrong with the embryo and the pregnancy would most likely miscarry in the 1st trimester. I hope this info helps you.
Your clinic did the right thing. The "drug that starts with an m" is methotrexate. It's routinely used to terminate ectopic pregnancies. Your hCG values are well below the normal range. We're looking for hCG numbers around 100 times what you had, although it varies a lot.
it was etopic. took the methotraxite and now I just have to go in to make sure my numbers are back to 0. Debating on whether or not to proceed. Don't really like my clinic, but in the end don't know if any of the other clinics are any better not in a position to travel, so that's out of the question. Plus, don't really want to get some of the testing redone. One clinic wants new day 3--even though just a clomid challenge test done w/ my period that started on Sept 27. Also they want new sperm analysis & last one was done in June. It's not my husband who has the issue and he's had about 4 or 5 sperm analysis in the past couple of years.
