High FSH

Post by Linda C »

I'm 37 now and I wanted to know if anyone with a high FSH level of 9.7 was able to get pregnant with IVF? What dosages of meds were used?

We are planning IVF in Feb 08. I was on Clomid for 3 months, Famera for 2 month, Follisitm 100 IU for 1 month reulting in only 1 follicle. I've also had 5 IUI. We have our Fertility doctor for 1 year now without a positive result.

I have also seen an acupuncturist for 4 month now.

Should we try another round of Follistim with IUI in DEC or just wait until FEB 08 with IVF cycle?

How fast does your FSH level rise?

Hi Linda,
My FSH came back at 10.4 2 years ago which they said was "borderline" and I never had any trouble producing eggs through IVF and am infact in the early pregnancy stages now (crossing everything!!). So all I can say is don't put too much importance on the FSH numbers. I think they mainly worry if you are shown to be pre-menopausal which is much much higher than yours! FYI, I got 22 eggs last cycle and 7 made it to blast so try to relax and know that IVF is different for everyone and we all respond differently. I changed clinics this time (my 4th attempt) and did a FET and my doc was never worried about my FSH. It wasn't until I looked on this forum that I realised it was "technically " high and it worried me to bits as well. It is only a marker for what the docs think your response level to the drugs may be. Obviously the more eggs, the better chance of quality selection but to prove that theory wrong I know many successful IVFers who only get one or 2 eggs and fall the very first time..Go figure!

Oh and I was on 225 of Gonal F (1st time) and Puregon 2nd time. Never had any signs of over stimulation either.

Good luck with your cycle.

I am definately considered borderline high. Earlier this year I tested at about 11. I then did a clomid challenge test and tested at 11.7 on day 3. I then take clomid for 5 days and they test again in which that number was a little above 7. I was told anything under 10 is really good and that's where it should be. I was also told that if I was at 15 or over last time I tested, that it would probably be a waste of time. I was worried about high FSH levels and so I too put out a thread like this (if you search under my name kbat you may find the thread), but basically there were others out there who had higher FSH levels than me and got pregnant. I am generally a poor responder--I don't get a lot of mature eggs about 2-4 eggs per cycle. But may be do to my age and higher FSH levels.

Best of luck to you.

P.S. I was usually on about 300 iui of Follostom or Gonal-F twice a day.. Some cycles I did lupron or lupron microdose twice a day also. This time I was on clomid for 5 days, and then 300 units of Gonal-F twice a day. Also did 2 syringes of ganerelix, then the trigger shot. I did accupuncture also for this round. I did pregnancy test yesterday. My beta numbers were low around a 2.8. Technically anything under 5 is negative, but they want me to go back tomorrow to see if those numbers are rising. If they are there may be a chance that I am pregnant.

well i'm not a doc but it sounds like you've been through it. I live in Illinois but I am starting with a doctor at the Jones Inst in Norfolk . Va. they take my insurance and they are the best... Eastern Virginia Medical Center developed IVF.. They up on all the latest research and they are very professional. It sounds like you should seek another opinion since you have not had any results.Good luck

My 1st (and only) attempt at IVF I had a fsh of 13. I was 37 at the time so they didn't put me and birth control at all. Instead they put me on what they called an aggressive dose of menopur and gonal f. I unfortunately don't remember the exact dosage. Anyway my IVF was successful. I produced 19 eggs, 15 fertilized, and 2 made it to day 5 blasts. I had 2 beautiful healthy boys as a result. Good luck

Linda,

Your FSH is really not all that high. Mine was 19.2 (peri-menopausal)and I produced 8 eggs. 6 fertilized.....2 were transferred and the other 4 all made it to the blastocyst phase and were frozen. I got pregnant with twins from the 2 that were transferred. No body...including doctors know how each and every person is going to respond to hormones. Technically I should have had a poor response with poor quality eggs if you read all the stuff out there. I had a great doctor and she never once said I should look at donor eggs. She was more than ready to see how I would respond. DO NOT believe everything you read or hear. Best advise is to go for it and work with a doctor that believes in you and not statisics!!

Good Luck

My FSH is 13 and they had me on maximum dose Repronex and Follistim ( 2 amps and 600 units daily). I was a very poor responder to stims. The most I ever made was 5 mature follies.

I've had 3 complete IVF cycles and 1 was successful, resulting in my wonderful 4 year old little girl. Good luck!
