Question about weaning off progesterone

Post by nicaliw »

My RE likes to wean off progesterone gradually whilst monitoring blood levels. I'm guessing thats how others also do it.

I'm very freaked out cause I have reason to believe I may have miscarried last weekend. My boobs are gradually getting less painful and less swollen.

I know it could be a coincidence because I reduced my progesterone a week ago but I am scared that this is the loss of a pregnancy symptom that just goes along with the suspicion of MC.

I'd love to hear if anyone else had less swelling/pain in their boobs when they reduced progesterone or just less pain but a continued pregnancy.
I know I'm a little crazy but I have been sitting on the couch/bed for 6 days now with 2 more to go before i can find out if this baby is still alive. Its very hard. :( :( :(

Hi Nicaliw...

I do know for a fact that when progesterone is reduced before week 16 then is a possibility of a bleed. This seems to be quite normal in some women. I don't know why doctors do this. They should just keep us on the prog for the first 16 to 20 weeks or even through the whole pregnancy. My OB put me right on prometrium 4X a day for the rest of my preg. I began the prometrium BEFORE the RE took me off of the PIO shots at week 11. My OB believes, as do many docs, that prog can even help stave off an incompetence in the cervix. With my first pregnancy (14 years ago) I was found to have a luteal phase defect and was on prog for 16 weeks - AND I bled from week 4 until week 15 - it was awful. Also, your bbs will go back and forth with pain and eventually they don't hurt anymore (just BIG  ). Mine haven't hurt for a least a month and before that they weren't particularly sore after the intital preg test even though I was on PIO shots to week 11.

I cannot predict what will happen with you but I will pray that it was just a uterine hematoma from all the extra hormones from IVF OR a twin preg that is now a singleton - both of those scenarios are real possibilities. Its so difficult to know because each case is different. So take it easy, watch movies, get your DH to cater to you and pray... we are all praying for you!

Thankyou and congrats! It looks like you're are doing well now!
I never did PIO shots, just prometirum vaginally three times a day, down to twice a day and now down to once a day. My progesterone level on Monday as 38 which I think is good, they said anything above 6 is good.
None of that really matters too much if the embryo has already given up. Monday can't come soon enough.
Man, I can't stand myself I am so grumpy......can't help it, feel like my pregnancy has been stolen away.
