Early Scan - Query with dates - how can this be with IVF?

Post by sarah76 »

Hello

I wonder if anyone can help. I had a frozen embryo cycle and implantation took place on 11/11/07. Very excited to get a positive test and went for my 6week 2day scan could see foetal pole but no heartbeat. Went for another scan today 6week 5days and could just make out heartbeat but foetus only measured 3mm and they said I wasn't even 6weeks but obviously being IVF i know I am later. I don't know what to think - is this bad? Has anyone else experienced this?

Hmmm..
I don't understand this at all. At my clinic, we were told not to have intercourse during the cycle time. So, there was no Q as to how the pregnancy happened (well, we weren't exactly in the mood for it anyways). I guess different clinics manage it differently.

Definately not a natural pregnancy, as we were careful not to that is why I am very confused about it all. I am just hoping that there is a logical explanation for it all!

Hi, It could just be that the embryo implanted late, i assume you will have another scan pretty soon to check it is growing as it should. Try not to worry too much, and good luck. Out of curiosity what was your transfer date and age of embryo, also what were your beta results?

Hi - Yes I hope it could be late implantation but it would have to have taken over a week to implant and I had a positive test with an early pregnancy test just over one week after implantation. Implantation date was 11th nov and it was a frozen embryo so my understanding is that the embryo was approx 3/4 days by then. I don't know what beta results are? It does seem a bit of a mystery but I am going to remain positive and hope that the little one now grows like it should.

Hi sarah, beta numbers are from a blood test from the clinic, i assume you only got to take an HPT as you are unaware of the numbers. i know you say implantation date was 11th Nov, i assume you mean transfer date of the embryo's, and the clinic should have told you wether they were 2/3/or 5 day embryo's. this all makes a difference to how soon they would implant. Implantation of the embryo into the uterus would happen around day 10, so depending how old the embryo was on transfer, it could happen only a few days before your test. The good news is you saw a heartbeat, i hope it soon catches up, its not too much smaller.
good luck. when is your next scan?

Thanks for all the info - you have really given me hope. they have taken no blood at all this cycle. Sorry I did mean embryo transfer on the 11th Nov. I asked the clinic about the age of the embryo and they said that they were frozen on day 4 of my fresh cycle but one of the embryos had lost some cells over night during defrosting but had gained them back by the following morning, so they couldn't basically give me a figure. My next scan is on friday and am trying to focus on other things but it is so hard!!!
