Just had a horrid scan. the doctor said the sac was too far away from the probe to see anything - couldn't even see an embryo let alone a heartbeat. has anybody else had anything like this happen to them? I am 6 weeks and 4 days today. he says I need to go back next week when they will be able to say for sure either way. needless to say I am gutted - have been crying all the way home. am sure it is a blighted ovum. need to hear any stories where people have had a good outcome from something like this. beckym xxx
Hi Becky,

First of all, it is very early days - a lot of clinics wait until you are 7 weeks at least before doing the first scan.

Secondly, I know it puts you in quite a limbo state and is easier said than done, but try not to get too upset at this stage because it would all be a shame if you did for nothing when your next scan turns out to be fine.

Thirdly, do you ever go on Fertility Friends? Jac on there was told something similar (or might even have been go home and wait for the miscarriage to start) and she gave birth to a lovely little boy at the beginning of Sept.

Fouthly, if you do not feel happy with the result of your scan, get yourself to your local Early Pregnancy Unit - they will be much more sensitive (especially after you tell them about the IVF etc) and may be able to also scan you and spend more time looking around etc - I found them to be wonderful people and hopefully you will too.

OK, that's it from me - all the best of luck for a positive outcome

love Fiona xxx

Hi Becky,
Sorry to hear what an awful morning you've had. I'm sure you must be feeling really worried, but I don't think all is over yet so try not to panic.
A friend of mine (natural conception) had an early scan because she'd had a previous early miscarriage, and they couldn't see anything and told her she was probably going to miscarry again, and to come back next week to check nothing was left or she'd need a D&C. She spent a week grieving, then went back and saw a healthy heartbeat, and is now 17.5 weeks and absolutely fine.
I really hope the EPU can give you some reassurance and that all works out for you too.
Beck x
Oh Becky

You must feel so pi$$ed off at the mo not to mention pretty worried. When I went for my 6 wk scan they told me not to expect too much as like Fiona said it is very early anyway. I was told that we probably wont see a heart beat. I think the person who did your scan was very insensitive and could have given you more support. Please try to stay positive and hopefully next week there will be something to see.
Have you had any symptoms?

My fingers are crossed for you and I will be praying for you and your DH too. Take care and we are all here for you.

Love Dagny x

Hi Becky, I am so sorry you've come away from your scan without any real answers.

I don't have any experience of this - but I thought that if they saw a sac in the uterus at 6 weeks that was a good thing and they expect to see a heartbeat at around 8 weeks.

Please try and stay positive. When is the scan next week?

Sending hugs and kisses your way.

Take care

Dolly

PS: it might be a good idea to contact your EPU and ask them what they would expect to see at this stage.

Dear Becky

Sorry to hear your about your scan today, I am sure everything is going is OK, its early on and often difficult to see much as this stage. I think you should contact the EPU to put your mind at rest.

Best wishes buddy

Vicki X
Hi guys

thanks so,so much for your positive (and prompt!!) support and encouraging stories. can't tell you how much they have meant to me in the last couple of hours. I guess I've just been so used to everyone posting that they've seen heartbeats on their first scan that I didn't stop to think when those first scans were - ie were they in actual fact 7 week scans?

thanks also for the tip re the EPU. I have been onto NHS Direct and they are going to phone me back and let me know where the nearest one is to here as we are still in Leatherhead.

crossing fingers this story has a happy ending!! after all, have had no bleeding, plus sore boobs, constipation and a bit of nausea on and off so that is positive. just eating my way through the fridge now - my normal reaction to extreme anxiety!!!

guys who are testing on Thursday - please don't be down-hearted about what has happened to me today - you guys are testing I think almost a week later than I did so should be able to see something plus if it does turn out that I do have a blighted ovum it's pretty rare (1%of all m/cs) so unlikely to happen to more than one of us!!

beckym xx
Beckym,
Look at the ivfconnections.com board (I really like this site), on their Pregnant After IVF board. Right now there is a current thread there called 'U/S', which is full of stories by women who didn't see heartbeats early, and were scared to death, but then did see them, & have healthy pregnancies or babies. I'll try to post the link but I'm really bad at that normally, so I've given you details of where to find it yourself in case I mess up!!
http://207.44.160.141/board/showthread. ... 8694
It occurs to me that when you got your + Beta, you were a bit of a slow starter & Mr T had you take a Beta every few days until he was happy that your numbers were growing nicely. Maybe that indicates a late implantation, which is why you haven't seen the heartbeat yet. My first IVF clinic wouldn't do scans until 7.5 weeks lmp; this annoyed me, but maybe they did have a point.
Best of luck. I won't say don't worry, because I know you will. This IVF/pregnancy thing never lets you have a moment's security, does it!!??
Warm wishes, Lori

Becky

don't really know what to say, as you know this is also my first positive and my scan on Thursday. I think, as ever, you have received some excellent advice and maybe like they were slow starters when they were dividing, they are also slow movers and haven't quite got to their destination yet. The clinic didn't seem to helpful I would ring the EPU and listen to their advice. You have exactly the same symptoms as me and I will let you know what happens on Thursday, I think I am one week ahead of you.

We are back to PMA again, you got the positive you haven't had any bleeding. Take care I am thinking of you and praying that everything will turn out fine.
Lots of love

Lisa xx
becky i've read and re-read your post. i can only imagine and dread what you've both been through today, but please try to hold onto

* there is a sac
* it's in the right place
* you're following up with the e.p.u so need not wait until next week

i know that nothing i can say will ease the worry. i hope that you will get your next appointment asap. epu's should have more sophisicated eqp and, i'd hope, personnel highly experienced with this situation (no disrespect meant to your doctor).
when pregnant last year the woman scanning me for the 1st time said that at times the radiologist finds it difficult to orientate with the uterus (her words)and in my case i had to have some else take over. he found the sac, she couldn't. i know it's not the same situation, my point is that skills do differ.

i'll be praying for you.

phil x
Hi Becky,
What an awful time for you but as everyone else has said 6 weeks is early for a scan. I've had 2 scans at 7+ weeks and been told before the scan that they might not get to see anything. Its such a stressful time for you and DH and I've my fingers and toes all crossed for you (makes typing and walking a bit difficult but hey you're worth it!!!)
Have Nhs Direct got back to you?
Take care,
Di
Becky, I can only imagine what you're going through at the moment.

At our 6 week scan we didn't see any heartbeats and although for a second the nurse caught a glimpse of two sacs, she could only find one for the rest of the scan. When we went back two weeks later we very clearly saw 2 sacs, 2 embryos and 2 heartbeats. So the two weeks between scans made a huge difference (our twins are now 20 months old so we had a positive outcome).

Take care.

Jules
