Myth/ Fact - Please Chime In

Post by dcu917 »

Hi All,

Just wanted to get the consensus on a few things that I am not sure are a myth or a fact. Please post your thoughts. i even got differing recommendations from my RE and a nurse in the office on some of them! Thanks!

One cup of regular coffee (standard mug) is ok while cycling, even before and after ET.

Progesterone shots are better than progesterone suppositories.

A glass of wine every now and then is acceptable until start stims.

One day of bedrest is recommended after ET and resume normal activity the following the next day (except heavy lifting and high impact sports).

Limit exposure to cleaning supplies, paint, etc., in 2WW.

Eating whole milk (ice cream, etc.) will help to increase chances.

Feel free to add some of your own.
Me - 39 (one ovary) DH - 40 (OK)

I suspect that's a myth, but of course it depends on dosage and timing. Both can work very well.

The existence of "implantation cramps" may be mythical.

hi diane, how you doing?

re progesterone, my clinic use pessaries and i have got pregnant 3 times with them, so they definately work. after my last bio-chemical i asked about the shots and she said i could have them if i wanted, they have the same results with both, they used to use shots and will prescribe them if a patient insists, but they are more expensive and hurt. so i stuck to the pessaries.
no proof bed rest works i've never done bed rest, i did however take a week off from work and just relax around the house, a few walks with DH but generally just took it easy.

as for coffee i cut it out altogether although i generally only had 1-2 cups per day anyway. But on the pregnancy front you are allowed 300mg caffeine per day which equates to around 5 cups of proper coffee, but chocolate also has caffeine so you have to be careful.

chemicals are a big no no.

no hoovering, too strenuous on the ab muscles.

no baths/swimming due to chance of infection.

hope that helps

I cut out caffeine all together

My doc offered either the progesterone shots of suppositories...they said it works the same. I am deciding which one to use...learning toward the suppositories but you're supposed lie down 30mins after each one 3times/day....not sure how that will work when I am at work. The shot is once/day but painful. And the nurse said i may need to be on it upto 10weeks of pregnancy. Any toughts on this?

Alcohol: I was told that once the shots start, you treat youself as if you're pregnant until you're proven otherwise, so no alcohol, traveling, heavy lifting, etc.

My nurse said about 2-3days of bedrest after ET

Didn't say anything abot the cleaning supplies, but I'm sure the exposure to fumes isn't good and should be avoided.

Didn't get much info on the diet I should follow. Whole milk...got it :) Any other advise? I read you should eat pineapple after ET - some enzyme that helps implantation.

What I've heard

Post by webgirl »

Coffee--- My RE said stay away from it all together. Try Green Tea Instead.

Progesterone shots--- I've been doing them for about a month now and even though they make your bum hurt... I would do that before suppositories.

Wine--- Stay away from it...

Bedrest after ET--- What the heck it can't hurt.. Relax and get Accu before the ET

Limit exposure to cleaning supplies, paint, etc.,--- Yes, by all means.

Whole milk (ice cream, etc.)--- My RE suggested to stay away from all dairy products as it creates lots of mucus.. Especially Ice Cream!

Most of all relax.. relax.

My accupuncturist told me to stay away from green tea - although any herbal teas are good.

21bat, Just thought i would add re; the progesterone suppositories, i do 2 a day at night only, and i pop them in just before i go to bed so i am lying down. However i am now 12 weeks pregnant and go to the toilet within 30 mins of doing so and all is fine.
On the same note i did an FET were there is no natural prescence of progesterone so i am relying solely on the suppositiries until the placenta takes over, On a fresh cycle progesterone is present in the follicle luteim? so it is only given as a precaution on a fresh cycle.
Hope this helps.

Hi Ladies,
Just wanted to add my 2 cents:
Stay away from caffeine. It's a vasoconstrictor which means theoretically it could decrease blood flow to the uterus & ovaries. Besides, the hormones/meds can make you crazy and calm crazy is better than hyper crazy.
Progesterone shots vs. suppositories -medical evidence shows that they are about equal.
Wine -I don't think a glass with dinner hurts the cycle at all BUT be careful. Alcohol can increase bleeding times. I was also on baby aspirin during my cycles and it seemed like the times that I had a glass of wine I would end up with a bigger bruise from the shot. It wasn't worth it for me, so I cut out the wine.
Bedrest -the 1st cycle my MD didn't recommend bedrest at all & I got a BFN. My 2nd MD recommended 3 days bedrest and now after my 3rd IVF I'm pregnant. So I have to recommend the bedrest and also it was nice to relax.
I dont worry too much about cleaning products, but I'm not about to go spray pesticide around the yard.
Mostly, I think acupuncture before the transfer is about the best thing you can do to achieve success. And try to relax in general. It worked for me.
Good Luck to everyone!

Does the paint and cleaning supply rule start after ET, or when you start injections? Also I was planning on still having my glass of wine everyother day till ET; My Re said that was fine.
