I know this varies by age, but what is a normal number of total follicles that is expected on your first u/s? Of course, the more, the merrier but what is average? I know some don't mature... What is considered a poor responder?
I am 36 and had 8 follicles, 1 already at 20mm aad the rest at 10-14 mm on day 8 of stimming. I am really nervous...
Thanks!

My wife is 36, we ended up with 10 follicles. Retrieved 10 eggs, 8 fertilized, 2 implanted and are 7 weeks pregnant. Go 2morrow for ultrasound to see how many we got...
Sound like your off to a great start, we have been and will be nervous all the way till they smack the babys behind and make him/her/them cry.
hey rio!
I don't know that there is an "ideal number" I mean 8 big ones and more a bit behind sounds great!
my doc says the real thing to be concerned with is overstimulation - and producing too many eggs -like 40 or something
are you on Gannerilix or some "antagonist" at this point to prevent ovulation? When is your ER scheduled? do they know yet?
I have my appt tomorrow -they'll be looking to see what's going on, and I will start Gannerilix to keep me from ovulating until they tell me they're ready, then Ovadril 34 hrs before ER - I'm on 4th day of follistim& menepur
I don't know the answer...but after reading so much on boards like this one it seems that it can range vastly. When I was 25 or so I donated eggs and they only were able to retrieve 11 eggs. They don't tell the egg donor if any were fertilized or how many were 'good'. Still, seems like a small amount for such a young age I hope they were able to conceive.
Hoping that I'll get atleast that many for my own try soon
Hey, Don't worry at all. That's a fine number of eggs. I am 33 about to turn 34 in a month and I had 14 retrieved, but only half that fertilized, and we got 3 to put in (2 8-cell, 1 6-cell for a 3-day transfer.) Now I'm pregnant.
It's not quantity, it's quality! Just wait and see, and be good to yourself during this tough time.
Me: 37 DH:40 TTC since 2005. First IVF cycle canceled. 2nd cycle BFP 1/11. DS arrived late 2008. 3rd cycle, U/s 3/7. Devastated. NO fetal pole or HB.
markd- Thank you and congratulations! It is nice to hear success stories
Lost girl - congratulations on your pregnancy! Thank you for your words, I was hoping to get around 14 but like you said I am going to pray those are good ones!
Indie - thanks! My FSH (ovarian reserve) was great so I guess I just didn't respond well It was a great thing you did and I hope that you were abe to bring joy to a couple!
loopie - he saw 8 total - does it happen that there could be smaller ones he couldn't see? One I think is already mature (I don't know what happens to the big guy that got ahead of the others!) the 7 range in normal size for this cycle. I was supposed to start ganirellix today but he said to wait until the ultrasound tomorrow afternoon (he cancelled today). ER was scheduled for 19 (Sat) but now I don't know. I have done 8 days of stims so far. Also follistim and menopur, ovidrell maybe thursday.
I am just nervous and the meds make me very sensitive and like all of us, I just really want this to work!!!!
You guys are wonderful support! Thank you! Thank you!

Rio,
Just to add my 2 cents... DON'T be intimidated by 'really good responders'. I guess I might have been considered a poor-average responder, but who cares? They retrieved 5 follies from me, 3 fertilized, 2 grade A's were transferred, and now I'm 10 weeks pregnant! You only need ONE really good one, just focus on that. Lots of luck and baby dust to you!

Hey Loopie and Rio! I didn't know you guys were stimming. Good luck to you both!
Rio, I was considered a poor responder. I remember seeing various definitions of it but less than 5 is what sticks in my head. I think that referred to retrieved eggs. And, I had a way worse lead follicle situation than you have on my first cycle (that produced Evie!). My lead follicle was at 13 or 14 on the very first suppression check ultrasound!
My doctor told me 10 antrals was good. Sounds like you have at least that since you have a lot of them growing. You might lose the 20 mm one, but you have plenty of others and if they all grow together you will be in good shape!

I got 6 eggs in my first fresh cycle, of which 5 fertilised and 3 made it to Grade I day 3 embryos. We transferred one (BFN) and froze the other two, but unfortunately neither made the thaw when we tried to do a FET.
Our second fresh cycle, we got 8 eggs, which my clinic told me is precisely the average number of eggs they get. I think the UK clinics tend to stim at lower levels over here than in the US. 6 of the eggs fertilised and we ended up with one good blastocyst at day 5. It only takes one, as they say, and we found out on New Years Day that I'm pregnant!
So the number of follicles you have sounds just fine. I would always choose quality over quantity anyway! Good luck!

GEORGE THOMAS ALEXANDER born 18th September 2010, 9lbs 4.5oz. Our beautiful boy.
I'm 37 years old and had 15 eggs retrieved and all fertilized. 4 were abnormal one fractured. I had a BFN, could of had possible OHSS though. i was told my body produced like someone under 30 years old. Did FET had BFP but miscarried Quality is better than quantity. I went to blast first fresh cycle, so my other embies didn'tmake it lost 6 embies. next fresh will only do 3, 3 day embies will transfer. I was told you wind up with 1/3 of what you start with, that is why they like a good amount. Plus you can freeze the x-tras. I would think you might have some to freeze Good luck.
