Hi Jackie,

I just want to say try not to worry I know its easier said then done but this isn't going to help you and it isn't going to help your baby. The thing is though Jackie these results are not always accurate so you never know. I was asked to have the tests done I am (29) in which I was going to have it done but like my husband said even if something come back as wrong or high risk what would you do? he said its a life its our son or daughter you would love he/her no matter what and he had a point. He said if it come back high all I would do is worry myself sick.

I think Sally had something where it come back high risk but everything was ok for her in the end, I think don't quote me on it.

Let us know how things go.
Thinking of you.
Love
Shell.
33wks 2d pg
xx
Hi Jackie,

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time. Shell is right, these tests can be very inaccurate. Haven't got a story to help really, all I can say is we decided not to test for Down's as I bled a lot and we were told that the chance of coming back high risk/false negative was high because of it. We knew after everything we went through, we could not have taken the decision to do anything anyway, so we felt we were almost burying our heads in the sand and have faith. After all, what will be, will be. However, that was personal to us and you have to do what YOU feel is right, and not be pushed into anything quickly as you live with your decisions, not the hospital.
Try and relax a little anyway - I know it's hard. I really hope things go well - there's been lots of stories where things have been fine, so try and stay positive.
Zoe x
24wks 3d

Oh Jackie.....what a nightmare, but.....
A friend of a friend of mine had a 1 in 5 chance of down's and they took the risk and the baby was perfectly NORMAL....so think very carfully this is only an assement, and correct a downs baby does not have a nose bridge, have you had any bleeding in the pg, as this also alters your bloods and will effect the result.
The CVS will give you a 100 result and I am keeping everything crossed for you and DH and of course Bump........
Try and stay calm...you have come this far just hang on in there.

Sending you lots of love and hugs
Wibbs
XXXXX
Hi Jackie,

I posted back in May with our Downs scare. Like you and your hubby we were a mess. After much soul searching I decided not to have an amnio because by then I was 20 weeks, and had downs been confirmed there was no way I could have done any thing anyway. I also couldn't bear the idea that I might put the baby at risk and find that they had been fine.

Anyway to cut a long story short, Daniel was born in Sepember and is not a downs baby.

If you make the decision to just risk things without having any further tests, then believe me when I say that your minds do ease. Don't get me wrong there is still a nagging worry, but nothing to what you're feeling now.

Good luck with whatever decision you make.

Suzanne.x

p.s I've seen posts from women with a higher risk than yours who have been fine.
Dear Jackie

Like all the others have said, these tests are not fool proof and that perfectly healthy babies are born after a high risk has been shown. My step sister in law was told to have an amnio or cvs after her scan showed a high risk. She decided against it and has now got a little boy without downs although she gave birth to him at 26 weeks at 2lb 1oz! I think she has had her fair share of worry.

Whatever you decide to do will be right for you and I wish you every bit of luck. Do try to stay calm as it's better for you and baby. I didn't know that about the bridge of the nose. I have learnt something nearly every day from this web site.

You are all in my thoughts and I am praying for you, John and the baby. Take care.

Love Dagny x

JAckie

get another opionion on this - basically this is the way I see it and you should try to....
Your risk was 1in 48 because of your age - your risk has now gone down and is 3 times less likely to produce a downs baby. This is the maximum risk you can expect - it can't really be much more than the one you got. Also all those babies and you might possibly be the one in over 100?? Another think - cvs testing is risky for the baby - you have a 1% chance of miscarriage so if your test is more than 1:100 then you have more chance of losing the baby to the testing. I know what the worry is like - I am 37 and look what happened to our baby we lost at 20 weeks but if I was you I woould look at this in a positive way. I remember having the same chat to Suzanne (how are you?)and her's was fine.
This is always a worry and I worried Jackie - you can't help it - I believe you have fought so hard for this and this result is as good as it comes. Good luck with whatever you decide
Love
tracey
xxx

Jackie

I really feel for you as I feel you and I have been through a similar rollercoaster ride over the past month and it's a real bummer because you think - why can't we just have things go smoothly like everyone else for once? Here are my thoughts on what has happened:

1) I suggest you get another nuchal scan done somewhere else before you do anythung else - a girl I met in hospital the other day who is now 18 weeks and 36 yrs old had a low nuchal result come back and went and did it at another clinic and came back with a much better result.
2)the wife of a good friend of mine went through this recently and my friend told me that there is an intermediary test you can do before CVS or amnio which ruled out downs in her case.
3) I would go for amnio rather than CVS, if anything, as CVS is more risky. My sister-in-law who is a doctor confirmed this to me.
4)I agree with tracey S - 1 in 140 is still a very low risk although i know it may not seem like it at the moment cf 1 in 100/200 for a m/c from the further test. If it were me, don't think I would take the risk.

hope this helps and best of luck whatever you decide. beckym xxx
Jackie ..... sorry to hear you have this worry. Just to add my two penneth into the pot, the way I view it is this:

Imagine 140 babies being born - only one MIGHT not be as healthy - that is a LOT OF PERFECTLY NORMAL BABIES!! The numbers they give you are just stats and probabilities - I'm sure your little one will be fine.

Lots of love - try not to worry too much - my boss's wife was given a 1:130 ratio (she was 41) and their little girl was fine, they didnt bother with the amnio as her brother had one done and the hospital lost the results so they had put their baby at risk for nothing!!

Jo. XXXXX

Dear Jackie,

I know exactly how you are feeling, as I had a Nuchal scan that came back with a risk of 1 in 140. I'm 36. YOu've got to keep calm and put this into perspective. It is not a 'high risk', it's a 'slightly elevated risk' so I think the MW you spoke to was a bit out of order as I would say that 1 in 100 or less was 'high', but I undersand completely how worrying it is. However, look at it logically - it is risk of 1 in 140, that's only almost half a percentage chance, so if you look at it like that it's not too bad! Also, have you ever known anyone put a bet on a horse that had been given odds of 140 to 1? No, and remember that's all that this tests shows - your odds.

I wasn't offered a CVS, but had an amnio as I really wanted to know, and aftre an agonising 3 week wait showed that the baby is a boy and is completely normal. I rested in bed for 48 hours after as a precaution.

When you went for your scan, what was the nuchal fold thickness? There is more risk of Downs if the fold measured over 3mm. Ours measured 1.8 and everything thankfully was normal.

I hope and pray that everything is normal with your baby.
pls post to keep us updated or if you just want to talk,
love Sally xxx

hi girls.
thank you all for such lovely responces, and good sound advice. however i did not get to read these untill just now, so we have been to clinic yesterday.
we had a long chat with the consultant, who did more scans and found he had a very clear path to taking the sample, he does do a lot of these, which app lowers the risk of miscarry. so after that we decided to go ahead with the cvs{but also have decided to keep the baby no matter what} we just need to know one way or the other.
the test itself was not as painful as i thought it would be and they were all a lovely team in there.
however, we always have a drama, so.... left the room walked to the toilet and pored with blood and clots.... back into the room, new scan... baby is fine.. waving again, moving around and heartbeat perfect. he thinks it might be more of the other sac going again{my 2nd bleed in this pregnancy}. so on bed rest for week now.
we will get results on mon. so please God we can then start to relax.
so that has brought you al up to date and will post tomorrow.
once again, thanks alot for your support
take care love jackie
Hi Jackie

You are so brave. I do admire you. You make all my earlier problems seem so silly. I have a good feeling that everything will be ok. Your baby is obviously strong, like ours, who I think is a tough little bruiser who still hung on even through a massive bleed (threatened miscarriage) and an MRI scan. We have to keep the faith and pray for our little ones.

Rest, rest and more rest for you and I wait with baited breath till Monday for your results update. Take care and think positive thoughts.

Love Dagny x

Hi jackie,
You do go through the mill don't you? I thought I'd gone through a few dramas in my time but nothing like yours! I do hope (and I've everything) that your darams are now behind you!
Take care,
Di
PS We couldn't have another nuchal scan as the night we had it was the very last night we could be scanned as I was 13 weeks ans 6 days! In fact the Dr told me that she'd had a woman in who the nuchal scan showed she'd a 1 in 2 chance of Downs and went on for amnio which showed baby was fine. We've decided not to have tests as they aren't absolute and I don't want to deal with maybes!
JAckie

A few of us don't half put the others through it one way and another - loads of rest and fingers crossed. Knowing you from the threads you will love baby either way but of course I am hoping for some good news and you to be able to have a less eventful pg!
Love
Tracey
xxx
