Anyone know if it's possible to choose the best sperms for ICSI-IVF?

I had to attend a seminar on IVF....which explained the ICSI process. They said they watch the sperm swim and will catch the fastest and best forward swimmers and will pick the best ones to use for the ICSI process. 8)

my doc's office explained to me that they do what's called a "swim up" for EVERY one of their ICSI cases.........where they put all the little swimmers in this spinny thing and then (for whatever reason???? i don't understand the science behind it  ) the best of the best "swim up" and those are the ones they use!!!

AND -- for what its worth, it worked for me!! I JUST found out BFP!!!

***GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!*****

Thanks for your replies. Looks like it all depends on experience of the embryologist. My doctor told us that they pick the sperm that appears normal but does not guarantee it will have no abnormalities. I was wondering if anyone knows of a more advance method to truly select the best/healthy one.

There is a method called PGD. You can google it for more info. I was told insurance definetly dont cover it and that it is $3500. You can also select the sex of the child. However, the real positives of it is that they can select ones that dont have down syndrome, CF, or anything else that is bad. With ICSI they just catch the fastest and best swimmers to use to fertilize the egg with....assuming that if it is swimminf fast and forward and looks good that chances are it is a good one. Good Luck.

hi md2008

DH and I are also doing ICSI - hopefully ER and ET next week sometime

- as ICSI has only been done since 1994 or so, there are no studies as to the long term effects this process may have on, say, fertility issues of a male child - so there could be issues later, they just don't know -I am willing to take that risk.
As for other medical concerns, it seems to me that the docs or techs in the lab will do everything in their power to choose the most viable sperm to fertilize each egg. From there, the ones that grow are no different than those done with "regular" IVF where they drop some swimmers in the petri dish( or whatever it is) with the egg, and let them fend for themselves

I know they put them in a centrefuge, and DH is on an antibiotic to decrease the # of white blood cells that are often in the ejaculate - makes it easier for the docs to find the good'ins!

hope it all goes well for you!

Here's my take on it. I don't know how many will like this or if I offend anyone but it's not meant that way at all.

We are doing IVF cause we have no other option. I have a history of ovarian cancer and by the grace of God I was able to keep my left ovary even with having had 3 open surgeries. So I knew years ago that having a child would be a fight. One that I was willing to take head on. Lucky enough to marry my best friend and the love of my life, i"m now in a place where that fight is within reach. We went to our RE knowing that there were alot of things out of our control. But having gone through what I did in my past I knew that everything happens for a reason. That in my heart, i was in the right place and now is the right time. I trust that my RE and my team will do all that they can to pick the best eggs, the best lil sperms. There is nothing that I can do to make my eggs look better or to produce more. There's nothing my husband can do to improve his morphology challenge. We choose these doctors cause they are talented and they do this cause it's their passion. You have to at some point trust in them. Just as you have to trust that you will become pregnant.
NOW! that being said... I fully understand wanting to know how things are done and understanding why things are done. But I truly believe that somethings.. are left to this wonderfully talented doctors for a reason. We ladies have so much more to worry and stress over than how fast hubbies sperm will swim that day.

Eat right, take an after dinner walk with your loving spouses and talk about the future.. laugh about names you don't like or place you want to travel with your family.

*HUGS*
