Just Got BFP Confirmation, but I have the flu, with fever

Post by Hoekey »

Hi out there!! Well, I just got my BFP BT confirmed, but was in the Emergency Room this morning with the flu. I have a fever, 101.6, severe coughing, stuffy head, and the rest. The Dr. at the E.R. scared me!!! Said that fever can cause miscarriage and so can hard coughing!!!!! He did prescribe a cough medicine that can be taken by preganant women laced with codiene and cough has gotten better, tylenol to manage the fever. My IVF clinic did not seem worried, just gave me a list of other meds that are safe to take for syptoms. When I got home from emergency room and had my first pee I had just the very tiniest amount of pinkish discharge, (not on panties, just on paper, sorry tmi). But have had nothing since. Have I already ruined it????? My next Beta is Friday and they are looking for an 80% increase. Anyone else out there that has had the flu, with fever and gone on to have healthy babies???? Success stories would be a great relief!!

The ER doctor is an idiot! You can't have a miscarriage due to a cough! If that were the case women would be miscarrying left and right.

He is right about the fever but you should be OK if you keep it down with Tylenol.

Congrats on your BFP!!!!!!!!! I hope you start feeling better!!!!!

I have heard about the fever before but the coughing? Man, that is a little scary. I think ER docs are always kinda mean in my opinion...maybe I should go get some medicine then if that is true because I cough so hard it hurts...I will ask my doctor tomorrow

Thanks for the input girls. I have been so worried about coughing that I have been making funny grunting sounds all night :? trying not to cough. Now, they are not so painful this morning, less dry, more yucky. But how am I supposed to get rid of all the congestion if I don't cough up the yucky stuff?? (sorry, tmi) I know that when my sis was pregnant with both her children that she was violently sick, even before she knew she was pregnant. I can't imagine, I guess, that coughing would be so much different then violent vomiting. Both of her children were born healthy and very close to her due dates, so....

My slight cramping is back, good sign I think. I haven't had any pinkish stuff since that first time either.

TammyS, 3 good ones? I am so excited for you. Have a nice restful time, read, watch DVD's, etc...
Watched Nanny Mcfee last night, such a cute movie, very relaxing

sugabeanzs, let me know what your doctor thinks. Like I said my IVF clinic didn't seem worried.

srlegaspi, Thank you so much for the words of encouragement. I am cautiously excited about the BFP, I have another BT tomorrow. My clinic looks for at least an 80% increase, I have my fingers crossed!! US is scheduled for the 18th.

Actually I believe the ER doc since this happened to a friend of mine in her 14th week. My friend developed a horrrible cough during her pregnancy. She would cough constantly and very hard may I add. She eventually ruptured her bag and all of the fluid leaked out aand she miscarried. The doctors all told her it was due to her terrible cough.

Well, I am 17 weeks pregnant and I had a HORRIBLE cough for most of my pregnancy due to allergies and an illness I had at the beginning of my pregnancy. My RE said there is no way that you can have a miscarriage due to a cough. Just telling you what he said. I have also researched it over the internet and it said the exact same thing. I have never ever heard of this (except for the story you just told me).

Called my IVF clinic and talked to the nurse. Had some pink, creamy discharge with a B.M earlier (sorry TMI) She was very positive. She said that yes, they do worry about fever but 101.6 for half a day is okay, I have been able to maintain about 99.1-6 or so with tylenol. The cough has definitely decreased. She told me that if my fever were 103-104 for a couple days then miscarriage is a GREAT possibilty. She also said that if I just had the transfer that yes, the coughing could cause problems, but she said "you ARE pregnant now, there is nothing to dislodge, it's a baby, you can't cough it loose". She also reassured me that my immune system protects the baby. Think I will research it on the net a little too. And of course she said not to worry about the pinkish stuff, just par for the course she said, and though I am worried I have not given up hope. I have seen sooooo many women who have had down right blood spotting and still get and stay BFP.

Kabillion, I am really sorry to hear about your friend, that is so scarey.

srlegaspi: Good to hear you didn't cough your little one away, but I am stiil being very cautios when I cough, I try to grunt  them away, sometimes it works but DH just rolls his eyes

This is such a bummer, I should have been going out to celebrate, and I am stuck in bed, feeling like poop  I will not be really assured until after my BT results come back tomorrow, I am praying for that increase!!

I had pnemonia with my 2nd child and she still made it. I coughed and was hospitalized when I got to where I couldn't breathe....she was born just fine and is now a healthy 12 year old LOL (well as healthy and adjusted as a pre-teen can be).

Listen to your nurse....and take it easy :)

Hoekey-

Don't worry! I was actually sick the day of the ET, and was pretty sick on and off for the first month and a half (hacking cough and all). I'm 12+ weeks now. You seem to be keeping the fever down, so good. And as far as the cough, I think miscarriage due to coughing would be EXTREMELY rare. Just think, most women get sick at least once within a 9-month period of time. So relax and take what the ER doc says with a grain of salt. They are trained to think of what problems may arise.

Feel better!

You girls have been so great!! Thanks a ton for your advice and optomism. Don't we see disaster in everything.

IndieBlue: I had pnumonia when I was pregnant with my youngest too, who also just turned 12, but I was 7 months along at the time. I was only hospitalized for a day for that, just fever control and baby monitoring. I remember being very worried then too, but I was already so far along that the fear of miscarriage was the farthest thing from my mind.

I forgot to say that I also had slight-medium pinkish discharge once or twice in the very beginning. Since you are sick everything is tender and sensitive, so it makes sense logically. Anyway, lots of luck, and just allow positive thoughts. Toss the negative ones out the window. :)

Well, woke up this morning and with my first BM had a lot of red blood in toilet and on tissue. Did not strain, just normal BM. (I know I know, always with the TMI). I called my IVF clinic and now they were concerned.

Went and had blood drawn, because of course you can't really tell anything until they see the numbers. Came back at 85 :( . They really wanted that number to be 90. Nurse said that she did not want to put a sugar coating on it, but that there still may be a chance. She said that it may be possible that I had more than one work and I just lost one so this would explain the blood and the lower number than hoped for. But was feeling good that there was an increase. She said not to give up hope, but also expect the worst. How do you do both? Anyhow, she said get lots of rest and wait for another BT on Tuesday. I have only had a little brownish stuff when I go potty now, no new red stuff. But if I start really bleeding this weekend before the BT then I am to go in and have it evaluated again.

Am I allowed to say this stinks? I finally get the BFP, I get a rash, flu with fever, and now this. The only good thing that has come out of this so far is that now I know I can still get pregnant. I still feel quezzy, but can't tell if it's from the flu or from being preggo.

Anyone have this before?? Get lower than expected number though increasing nonetheless, with bleeding? Doubting it, but hoping for one of those miracle stories.
