I have recently undergone my first IVF with ICSI and got pregnant with twins. Now I have this fear that there is something wrong with them? My doctor never went over the risks associated with ICSI so it kinda makes me nervous. Anyone else undergone ICSI? I did not know there were more risks with it at the time. Mental and physical problems? Any help would be great with this matter. It could be the hormones talking because everyone says you are scared to death when pregnant that something bad will happen but who knows. Any material and advice on the matter would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

First IVF Jan 2008 Twin girls!
Hi there, I can relate to your anxiety!! We went thru 4 yrs of grueling time... trying everything like IUI, IVF but did not want to try ICSI for the same reasons. The amount of advice/help I tried to take from experts, forums like these & the amount I read on the internet etc, not sure if anyone can beat that. But at the end of the day, we went ahead with ICSI recently when nothing else worked. I can tell you that who-ever I spoke to on this forum, who had done ICSI, had positive experiences to share. One thing that always helps is when you relax a bit, stress does not help at all. If you have concerns, like I did, try amnio [at 16 weeks] & all other prenatal tests. I am planning to do that, to ease your mind a bit. Good Luck!! Keep me posted.

Hi,Congratulations, I am also pregnant with twins through ICSI. I have my 20 week scan next wednesday.
At the moment there is not enough evidence to say if ICSI is as safe as IVF, due to the fact it has only been used in the last 12 years, so anyone born through iCSI are still relatively young. Also the increased chance of abnormalities and/or learning problems are still very low about 4%, and no evidence to say it is definately because of ICSI.
My thoughts are if it is the only way we can have a baby it is worth the risk.
I am 38, i had the nuchal test and bloods and have come back at low risk, my sonographer was very experienced and at 12 weeks was able to see nasal bone, heart valves, bowel function etc, all which are triggers for downs.
We could stress ourselves to death with all the problems that could arise, if we had got pregnant naturally these worries would not even enter our heads even though the chances of abnormalities are still there.
Relax and enjoy your pregnancy.

We have male fertility issues and could only do ICSI. I am not worried about the baby not being healthy because of ICSI. I read a bunch and the risk is very small. They pick the healthiest swimmers for ICSI so chances are your baby should be fine. Don't worry and if you need reassurance do the tests! Enjoy your twins!

I have identical twin boys from ICSI and they are perfect! I had the CVS testing done because of my age and it came back completely normal. They are 9 months old now and are meeting or exceeding all their milestones despite being born at 35 weeks. They are such a joy and I can't imagine my life without them!
I have a little girl through ICSI, who is very bright and lively. She was crawling and walking before any of the other babies in our antenatal class. I have never had to worry about any milestones because she always appears to reach them before or on time.
I am now 11 weeks pregnant naturally and I have to say I am more worried about this baby! My DH had an extremely low sperm count (Never above 2 million in tests 3 and 5 years ago). We were told natural conception wouldnt happen, so I am worried because there were so few sperm there is less quality there!! At least with ICSI they are assessing and choosing the best quality sperm!
To be honest I think when you are pregnant or a mother you never stop worrying about something. Its just natural!

sugabeanz - I too did IVF w/ICSI and I am about 17 and 1/2 weeks along now. (I originally was pregnant with twins, but one was not viable. I do not believe this had anything to do with ICSI...vanishing twin is common.) I've had several ultrasounds so far, and everything has looked great. I just got my nuchal translucency u/s results back, and they were great. So I am not having an amnio. So...point is...do not worry! You have gotten through the hardest part! Congratulations on your pregnancy. Before you know it you will be in the 2nd trimester and feeling much more confident. Hang in there.

Thanks to all you ladies! Yes I worry a lot haha. But this information helps a lot to know there are TONS of people out there that have had this done and their babies are normal.

I too got pregnant with ICSI and I have the most perfect little boy I could have ever hoped for. Don't worry honey, when they do ICSI it is the best of the best, that they choose. They will only use the sperm that is in the best condition.
