Prenatal Testing, which ones, why?

Post by riogirl71 »

Which tests will you do or have you done and why (if you could add your age that would be great too)?

-Chorionic villus sampling (CVS)?
-Nuchal test?
-Amniocenteses?
-Cordocenteses?
-Fetoscopy?
-Alphafetoprotein triple screen?

I am starting to research all testing and I am nervous about doing an amniocenteses, and I also heard about lots of false positives on the blood and nuchal tests. Thank you for posting your thoughts and experiences!!!

Healthy baby dust! :D

I am not doing any of the tests. I am 28. I have chosen not to do the test b/c it wont make any difference in whether I have the baby - and we will just deal with what we need to when the baby comes. :)

I put that only if the other test show a high probability. It wont make a difference ...except that I can prepare myself mentality for the next few months. If the preliminary tests come out good ...then I dont see any reason to risk miscarriage. I may just change my mind on this and not do it no matter what...but I think it would drive me crazy not knowing. I am also aware that the tests can be wrong. I have 2 friends who they were wrong on. I am going to be 40 at 20 weeks. So I am really on the borderline and I know my chances.

I know what amnio is and nuchal ...but what are the other tests Rio? I have a high risk OBGYN so I am sure they will run every single non-evasive test there is ...so I havent really looked into what tests there are yet.

Tammy- the CVS is like an early amnio, but with higher chances of miscarrying. The triple screen is a blood panel, the cordocentesis is that they take a portion of the umbilical cord. The reason for CVS is that you find out early enough in your pregnancy if you wish to terminate it.

I think I have more of an issue with T-18 (I forgot the full name) a friend got diagnosed with it and her Doc said that her baby had 100% chance of being born with a fatal disease and 100% of dying within a year with enormous pain. So my fear is not to have a baby with a defect, my fear is to bring a child in this world to suffer... I also heard of false positives on Nuchal and blood panel. I think I will do all other tests and then depending on those results I will do an amino or not....

Hi, I did the nuchal test combined with the blood tests. But i had already decided i would not do any of the invasive tests, i just wanted to be aware if my risk was high. Thankfully i was low risk both babies being over 1 in 1500. At the nuchal scan if you get a good sonographer, they also check for downs markers cheching the nasal bone, heart valves, bowel function etc.
good luck with your decision.

Hi

Hi Riogirl, I feel so terrible for your friend. After having gone thru 2 m/c, having to make such a tough decision of aborting a pregnancy at a later stage due to DS, is really really sad!! And she is 44 also, hope she still decides to continue her quest for a baby & is blessed with a healthy, beautiful baby soon!
Do you know what were her odds at the nuchal test, what chances was she given of having a baby with DS? I am going nuts. As you know, my chances are 1 in 46 and I am not sure how I will wait till Mar 12 for amnio & then 2 weeks from then on after the amnio.
As I mentioned, I am planning to do amnio & any other tests if my gynae suggests, if any risks are there.

hi girls -
i'm not sure what we'll do- I know some tests are low risk - I haven't even met with OB yet to get feedback on what they think, so all I've done is a bit of reading- which is scary- they make it all seem so likely that there is a problem!!!!!!!- when you look at it- there is like a 99.5% chance that everything is perfect!

I'm 39 and DD is 4 days after my 40th!! so I am borderline for really starting to need to worry-
Something I've been wondering.... My mom had me at 37 1/2( I was her 1st birth child) my grandmother gave birth to my dad at 40 (1st birth) - so I wonder if there is something genetic about folks born of older parents that may suggest different egg quality? Just a thought- and I really don't know

i might just ask.....

anyhow- happy monday!

BUMPIN' 08!!!!!!!!

Gori- My friend went straight for amnio and bypassed the Nuchal and everything else. I know it is hard but keep the PMA. I am praying that you have a very healthy baby! I am so sorry you have to go through this stress.

Loopie- My grandma also had my mom at 40, my cousins all just gave birth at 39 and 40, naturally to healthy babies. I don't know if egg quality is genetic or not, that's a good question.
