Progesterone Shot in Thigh Anyone?

Post by krista »

I have been having difficulty with my progesterone shot in hips. I am running out of space and it is very painful. After I injected myself (with hubbies help of course) yesterday some of the meds squirted right out . It was the strangest thing...I called the nurse on call and she told us that we should try our injections into my thigh for a couple of days, but we had to use the same needle. When we tried to do that last night it backfired. The needle went most of the way in and then stopped, when I tried to push it further, it hit the bone! Now I know not to force it. The pain was horrible and made me sick. Has anyone given themselves the injections into their thigh with luck? Also, why do I have to use the huge needle if it just needs to go into the muscle?

If you are having this muchtrouble ask for suppositories such as Crinone, that's whatI did when I started having big trouble with PIO and oil shooting out. ood luck!

You can absolutely do the shots in your thigh but you have to change up a few things. First, don't push the needle in all the way(it sounds like you've learned that one). Unless your thigh has a lot of fat tissue on it, you only need to go about half way, more or less.
2nd(and most importantly), your thigh can't take the big dose that your hip can. That's why so many women say its too painful -they try a shot that is too big for the area. From my experience, your thigh can take a 1/2 cc shot fine but more than that will feel like a horrible bruise. So if you are injecting 1cc into your hip, try 1/2 cc into each thigh. That's really not so bad at all -it sounds worse than it is. I'd rather have 2 shots that don't hurt vs. one that does. If you are injecting 2cc into your hip, unfortunately you will have to inject 1/2 cc into each thigh and 1 cc into your hip. It sounds awful, but during my FET when I had to do the 2cc shot I had to try this for a few nights and it really helped. My poor hips could not tolerate the 2cc every night.
So the idea is to decrease the amount of PIO going into your hips to give them a chance to rest/recover. Remember to use a heating pad on your hips and long showers help too.
Good luck,
