Hi Angela,
If I remember rightly you're having treatment at King's?
We had our ICSI there and we were offered the tests but they're not compulsory and we decided not to bother. You have to pay for them - I think they're about £200 - which is a drop in the ocean compared to cost of treatment, but still another expense!
Our main rationale for not testing was that we would still try for a baby if the tests were positive, and if we'd conceived naturally we wouldn't have known about any underlying conditions, so we stuck with ignorance. There are lots of congenital conditions you can't screen for - we've got friends (who conceived naturally) whose little boy was born blind and they subsequently discovered they both carry a very rare gene for this. We worked out that if Rob's poor sperm were due to the cystic fibrosis gene, then both of us would need to be a carrier for the baby to have the condition, and even then the chance of it having the condition were one in four - otherwise it too would be a carrier but not symptomatic. As for the other things (Y deletion or something?) we worked out that if we had a son and Rob did pass it on to him, he (the baby) would be a positive example of conception being possible regardless of bad sperm!
Anyway, all this is just a personal opinion and lots of people do opt to know. We felt we'd been through enough turmoil so we just thought we'd try the treatment and think about it all once it had worked. Very luckily for us I got pregnant first time and am now 26 wks - don't know if boy or girl but adore it already!
Hope I haven't confused the issue more for you. Good luck with everything,
Beck x
