New in Atlanta...looking for advice, recommendations

Post by Sweet Girl »

I am new to all of this and just started seeing a RE in my hometown of Atlanta. So far, I've had the blood work and an HSG two weeks ago. There is a "growth" in my uterus, polyp or fibroid, that they are removing via hysteroscopy in two weeks. My RE told us last week that due to my age, which is 39, and my FSH level, which is 10, he recommends IUI or IVF, and gave us pretty low odds of being able to get pregnant....I think he said 5% with the procedures. During my HGS, his NP seemed to think the growth was the reason for our problem, as it seems to be blocking my husband's swimmers passage to my tubes. Also, my RE said that my AGH level was pretty good at 2.5.
In a nutshell, I'm getting mixed messages and am confused and freaked out. After his talk, I have been on the internet doing research for four days, and one thing that bothered me that I found is that his clinic's stats are really really significantly lower than average and just not good at all. They are consistently bad over the years available. The RE is nice enough, and I've seen him described as both brilliant and grumpy, which is all good and well, but.....those stats have me freaked out, too.
Do any of y'all ladies have experience or advice about 1) RE's in the Atlanta area, or 2) problems similar to mine, or 3) the weight that I should give to these stats, or 4) anything else that might be helpful??
Thanks ahead of time, and sorry to be long-winded....did I mention that I am freaked out?! :D [/img]

A good reputable clinic is the key to success. I am 38 and just completed a cycle of IVF with a highly qualified clinic here in MD and got a BFP on our first cycle. I am 12 weeks and 1 day today. I also have fibroids, but were told that they were so small that I didn't have to have them removed because they were not a threat.

I have kids from a previous marriage and had my tubes tied 17 years ago that's my reason behind having to do IVF.

So age isn't the biggest factor if you have a good clinic with good doctor's. I went to Shady Grove Fertility.

Hope this helps some.
Me, 40 - DH, 47
IVF #1: POSITIVE - Michaela born 9/19/08
IVF #2: Consult on 10/13/09 - Start BCP Dec since clinic will be closed for the Holiday.

I'm not familiar with Atlanta, but I have a DD from a clinic that has much lower success rates than other clinics in the area.

Some clinics have financing arrangements that encourage patients with high likelihood of IVF success. So, by having more "good risk" patients, they have more successes. Other clinics are more willing to accept challenging cases. On the other hand, some clinics probably are better than others. If you feel comfortable with the clinic and trust them, that's what's important.

That's my 2 cents.
