gori,
I am sorry to hear the news but I am hopeful that it will turn out to be a false positive. You are smart to do the amnio. Best wishes and blessings.

Gori- It really sounds like your chances are very good to have a healthy baby. When I was reading in different posts about all the tests (I am 36), I also read about all these false positives (tons of cases). Hang in there! Good luck and please keep us posted.

Hi

Will do, Riogirl. However, I am still perplexed/concerned by this: if there are so many false positives, then how come the experts say that NT tests are 80% accurate? Based on everyone's replies so far, it does seem like there are mostly false positives.
Secondly, this whole mechanism of testing is not very clear to me: when they say 1 in 46 chance of DS, if that is considered a risk, then what is a 1 in 80 chance... that should also be a risk. Same is true if it is a 1 in 10,000 chance, that is also still a risk. So technically, everything is a risk. Not sure how they qualify it? May be they go by risk cut-off. Like in my case, they wrote risk cut-off is 1 in 50, so anything below 50, would be considered a real risk, I think? This whole thing is very confusing, not to mention, it drives you insane worrying!!
I will surely let you know my amnio results as soon as i find out!

Gori - I agree with you whether they call it a risk or a chance it is the same thing. It seems like they factor in your age and all these other things into the result. I have read about high risk babies end up being healthy but never a great result on NT or blood test ending up in a baby with problems. So I think it is a stressful thing we all have to go through, but please keep a Positive Mental attitude that everything will be fine. I know a lot of women chose to skip all tests, others go straight for amnio. I will do the same thing you did which is NT then blood. Good luck! You have lots of people praying for a healthy baby!

Hi

Post by gori »

Anyone reading this post & looking for some answers on Down Syndrome, high risk pregnancy: here is an update. I got my Amniocentesis done last week. I got my Amnio FISH results today. This is a shorter version of the full amnio & takes less time [usually 24-48 hrs but mine got a bit delayed as they did not have the updated form]. While I am anxiously awaiting my full Amnio results, this one [FISH] has come back with good news - no issues with Down or anything. And it's a GIRL!!! So now, I can relax just a bit and wait for another week for the full amnio result.

Gori keep in mind that 1/46 is only 2%. That means that you have a 98% chance of having a healthy baby. The odds can really screw with you sometimes.

Hi Gori, Great news from your intial test! And congrats on your daughter!

Just a word on the Nuchal Test, we do them at my work and our risk is calculated based on the combined outcome of the bloods, the scan and maternal risk factors (age, family history, etc). We often see women with bad bloods (1 in 3, etc) but when combined with great scan results (1 in 10000) the combined risk comes back to 1 in 300. At these odds, I don't think the women even go on to have amnio's unless they ask for it specifically.

Gori: Congrats! I am so happy for you. This reminds me of my first experience with my DD (she unfortunately passed away from a rare genetic disorder at 13 wks but I know she is watching over her 2 twin brothers on the verge of birth in another 6 wks or so). I remember being a wreck before the amnio. I really don't understand the literature either. So much of it suggests these tests are very accurate, yet as we can all see from the boards, the rate of false positives is quite high. Again, so very very happy for you. Wishing you a healthy pregnancy. GIRLS ARE GREAT!!!!!!!

Hi

Post by gori »

Hi girls, thanks for your support. Final amnio came back also great!! Had my 19 week anatomy scan u/s yesterday & it was the BEST!! My little baby girl was sucking her thumb for a while [cannot believe I am saying that!] She was all over the place, really busy doing something or the other :) It was the best thing ever... to see her nose, lips, heart, fingers, toes, tummy, brain...everything!! It started to feel & look more real. My dh is over the moon. Cannot wait for the next 19 weeks!!
