Its been a while since I posted, buried my head in the sand, but its great to see how positive my OCB buddies are and its given me the strength to try again. After ectopic, OHSS and a failed FET I'm looking forward to lucky number 4 in 2004!
We are thinking of changing from Barts to the Lister as the results seem higher, is it better the devil you know? I wonder if anyone has an experience of thes clinics....advice please.
I went to both clinics - I had 1 ICSI cycle at Barts and 3 ICSI cycles at the Lister before finally achieving a positive pregnancy (due in 2 weeks!!).
I found the staff at both clinics nice, but I have to admit that the surroundings are nicer at the Lister than at Barts (not surprising since one is NHS and the other is private).
I'm not sure how their results compare, but it will cost you more at the Lister for a cycle.
The thing that persuaded us was the fact that I live in Brighton and the Lister offers scans (for follicular development) in Brighton, whereas I had to go to Barts for all the scans. I found this very hard work, but it obviously depends on where you live.
Another thing I found better at the Lister was the egg collection procedure. At Barts I had heavy sedation and was made to recover in a chair before being discharged. However, EC at the Lister is done under general anaesthetic and you are given a bed in which to recover. You can stay there as long as you want and there is also an ensuite bathroom and TV in each room (there are 2 beds per room).
However, it's really up to you. Pay a visit to the Lister and see if you like the ambience of the place.
I was an OCB too. I am now at the Lister and was previously at Barts, no comparisson as far as I am concerned. Egg collection and monitoring far superior, also you can choose which consultant you see and request if they themselves can do EC and ET. I have had 1 IVF cycle at both, both of which have been unfortunately negative, but I have 9 frosties and am going for FET as soon as AF arrives this month.
The egg collection at Barts was horrific for me, I never saw the same person and half the time didnt understand what they were saying, still it was NHS funded.
One other thing at the Lister that I have found, they will perfom EC etc when you actually need it instead of altering your drugs to fit in with the day they do the procedure!
Its not cheap but I had an op there in Aug too and the atmosphere definately makes this very stressful experience easier to handle.
Any questions please ask, happy to answer. I live in West Sussex, but was easier to go to Victoria on train than Brighton.
Hi
I hope you don't mind me butting in but have been reading your thread about Barts. The clinic I go to is linked to Barts and I will be going there in 3 weeks for first ec. Is it really horrific?!! You've got me all worried now!
Apparantely, they are opening a new ivf unit this month so perhaps it will be better?
Good luck to you all
Dawn
xx
I too cannot fault the Lister at all. Went to a previous clinic and they were not a patch on them. They monitor you so closely there, to get to as `ripe' as possible for EC, and all the consultants and nurses were fantastic.
I am now over 6 months pg after my first attempt there (had previous ones, so not one of the miracle first-timers!), and wouldn't hesitate to go back if we want a little brother or sister!
Thanks for your replies, we have decided to go to the Lister, starting treatment in Feb, can't wait. I'm looking forward to having a contact point, they have already called me out of hours to answer questions.
Oh well, better get on with some work to pay for it!
