what not to eat ??

hihi, i know u are not suppose to eat soft cheeses pate's and liver
while pregnant, what about mayonnaise ???

Hi Alison,

My midwife said to me about mayonaise that it was ok if you brought it from Sainsburys/Asda/etc already made. If your making your own she said no not to have it. I admit I have had some but not home made and to be honest I have tried to cut it out as much as possible. I can't believe some of the things we are not supposed to eat, I didn't know you couldn't have soft whipped ice-cream!!

hi Alisonn

The reason you are not allowed h/m mayo is because it contains raw eggs and you need to avoid raw/runny eggs (even runny boiled/fried or poached - they should really be cooked to firm - boring, I know!)

Helmans mayo is fine because they use powdered egg substitute. If you go to a restaurant and they bring the mayo in a little pot I usually ask if its h/m and most of the time (unless its a posh restaurant) they tend to say its only Helmans!

The raw eggs thing applies to creme brulee too!

Other things I avoid are: shellfish (prawns, mussels etc). This was a real bugger on our recent honeymoon to mauritius because everything was seafood! No smoked salmon, sushi or any other kind of raw fish.

In all the pg books there is a section on a diet and a huge list of foods to avoid. Its not all doom and gloom, find something you like and eat lots of it. Mine is chips and jam roly poly with custard!!

just a quick check, I can't remember if my midwife said this was okay or not - spready soft cheese like dairy lea or asda's own triangles. I thought it was just soft cheese like camanbert and blue veined cheeses and I ate some spready last night and a friend said that I shouldn't of.
What are your thoughts??

I also love mussels and sniffed in the pot when I made them over christmas!! how sad.

Philadelphia and laughing cow etc are all fine because they are pastuerised! I'm an expert because everytime I put something in my mouth, my dh rushes off to check in a bloody book whether I'm allowed to eat it or not!!!!

Another one that I wasn't sure about, but had it checked was cottage cheese and apparently this is fine too!

Yum yum - food my favourite subject at the moment! :oops:

I check everything if i have not had it for a while. I went to have tartare sauce with my dinner one night and its made with raw eggs it put me off my dinner, theres nothing worse when you fancy something. i bought a tub of hagendas ice cream had two spoonfulls though i would check the ingredients and its also made with raw eggs. I am going to leave it in the freezer for the next 7 months. Its not the same going out for dinner. I love pate, seafood, medium-rare steaks and runny eggs. But its worth giving up.
Don,t have much of an appetite anyway at the moment.
Resturants etc are not really allowed to make mayonnaise with raw eggs anymore they are suppose to use pasteurised eggs too many risks and too many pg woman asking them all the time i expect. I always do or just avoid it.

Hi Helen,

My M/W said to me providing that I had things in jars IE Mayo from Supermarkets I would be ok. My DH is taking the micky out of me cus I was typing and he was watching and I had put yars instead of jars ha ha :) never mind. It makes me laugh really because I know someone who never gave up smoking she would eat what she wanted drink what she wanted and she as had a lovely healthy beautiful girl so I try not to dwell on it to much.

Hi all

I had Parma ham the other week only to find out later you shouldn't eat it!

I wish I could find a book just on foods to avoid during pregnancy. I have lots of books but they have very little on what not to eat.

Anyone know whether salami is ok?

Shellfish is fine Nik as long as you know the source and is cooked properly - I avoided oysters and mussels in France last year and then found out were fine as long as cooked and fresh - I was always eating M&S prawn sandwiches. My consultant said fine just check the source or cook yourself. They are a good source of zinc. Not too much tin tuna and I ate parma ham - the italians don't stop! As for smoked salmon - ate all over christmas - the smoking kills the bacteria - more likely to get cancer from farmed scottish salmon! Only joking folks. Like all things don't be daft I reckon - it is worse worrying about it and let's face it our mothers were told to eat loads of liver and raw steak!

Hi Trace,

Your right in what you say, about the liver and steak, my Mom said this to me the other day. The thing is it didn't do any harm to us did it. I know we all want to be careful but there is that much that we are told not to eat. I was told by my m/w I had some cheesecake and she said I shouldn't of had that cus its made with raw eggs, but it was to late once I have eaten it, I just ain't touched anymore since.

My Dad said to me the other day, when I have the baby instead of buying me flowers they are going to buy me a big bag of prawns and some crab sticks because I was told I couldn't eat these and I am dying to eat some now.

Just looked out window 3 magpies sitting on the roof mmmm

Not too much caffeine - don't forget that one! I think the list of foods we can't eat outweighs the list we can - or is it just me that feels that?! :?
I really fancy soft boiled eggs on toast, or prawns in anything or pate on crusty bread. Mmm my mouth is watering just thinking of it all.
But hey ho a small price to pay! Think I'll just stick with my Greggs sausage rolls.
Nikola, Is that chips and jam roly poly with custard all together? The cravings must have really started!
