20 weeks scan!

Post by Nikola »

Hello all

Thank you for all your good luck messages! I'm pleased to report I had my scan today and both babies are fine. :P In fact one is a bit of a porker and is bigger than the average singleton at this stage! The other is close behind and is the same size as a singleton at 20 weeks.

I didn't have any tests so this was quite a nerve-racking scan, but they both seem to have all their bits - arms, legs, heart (pumping away). The sonographer said she could tell what sex they are but we said we didn't want to know just yet........this may change!!

As usual twin 2 was bashing around and wouldn't keep still. 'His' head is stuck up twin 1's bottom and 'she' keeps kicking him to get him to move. Bless. Fighting already.....

It was amazing how much they had grown since our last scan at 13 weeks. We could actually see their eyes and ears and fingers and toes. It was great. We have two brilliant scan pictures which we will add to our collection. :P

Luckily because we are having twins we get to see them again in four weeks time! No doubt they will have grown again.

The only 'negative' things (and they aren't major worries just yet!) are that they found protein in my urine and also my placenta is quite big and its blocking the 'exit'! This just means that if it doesn't move (which I'm told it probably will anyway) I won't be able to have a natural birth - the hospital seemed quite pleased about this, they want me to take the 'too posh to push' route to avoid any complications. :x

They've sent my urine sample off to be tested and told me to drink lots of fluid and hopefully this should be ok too.

Phew....glad its out of the way. I feel I can sit back and relax a little now and enjoy being pg and getting fatter!

Hi Nikola,

I have been waiting for your post and I just want to say how pleased I am that everything went well :) its such a worry when you go for these scans because you just hope and pray all will be ok. I am like yourself I didn't have the tests done either and I do worry sometimes thinking will everything be ok, but hopefully all will be ok.

I also had protein in my water and this is quite common in pregnancy but least they are sending it away to be tested.

I am so pleased you didn't find out what your having, I am glad I don't know even though now I think will it be a boy or will it be a girl. Some people like to know which is fair enough but I want the surprise!! it makes it more exciting.

So pleased, enjoy getting fatter

Hi Nikola

Wonderful news about your scan. I just can't wait for mine now! How many scan pictures have you got now? I have got 6. I still look at my 12 week scan all the time, I still find it amazing that it's in me. It must be incredible seeing twins!!! :D :D

Hi Nikola!

It's great to hear that both bubbas are growing (very) well. My two were as big as singleton babies until fairly near having them and we always found that quite reassuring, just in case they decided to make an early appearance.

Good luck with your protein worry and don't worry about the possibility of a caesarean - it's a breeze!

Hi Jules,

Did you have a c section?

Reason being I was just wanting some background on it, I know everyone is different. The hospital say I may have to have one with how big baby is so I just want to be prepared really, so any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Nikola,
So glad your 20 week scan went well - must be a big reassurance! And to get 2 more pics for the album!!!
I take it you're feeling well these days and no more sickness?
They don't do 20 week scans up here so I've arranged for a private one next Mon where I'll also get a 20 min video of the scan!

Gosh Di I can't believe they don't do scans at 20 weeks - when would your next NHS scan have been? I have to have them every 4 weeks now and then after 28 weeks probably every fortnight! I don't mind I'm glad to see them and check they are both ok. Today has been such a relief!

The paid for scans look fab - very clear and a video too. What a treat. We did think about doing this, but as we have so many free (and so many other things to pay for!!) we'll settle for what we've got.

Dagny - can't believe you have 6 photos already!! We didn't get pictures at 6 or 8 weeks, so we have 4 photots and they've grown so much in todays pictures compared to the 12 week scan. You'll be in for a big shock - a nice one though!

Jules - its great having someone who has had twins and lived through the first year! I've got zillions of things to ask you - so I'll send you a separate message. Tracey Sharp and I now have long idle conversations about what we need to buy and how we will feed two and where they should sleep.....the list is endless!

Guess what, I'm starving (again!) I'm off to get something to eat!!!!

Hello

Di, your post got me thinking. I wonder if they will let my DH in with our video camera at our 20 week (23 in our case - rediculous) scan. I wonder if it messes with the equipment like they say mobile phones do. I don't think we can have a video from the hospital so next best thing would be to video it ourselves. Has any one done that or know someone who has and were they allowed?

Nikola, I wish I was having scans every 4 weeks you lucky thing, I can't get enough of seeing my baby.

oooooh Dagny what a fab idea about the video recorder. Bugger wish I'd thought of that this morning. How brilliant to have a tape of you going for a scan. I must remember to ask my clinic next time we go!!!

I know what you mean about me getting regular scans, I do feel somewhat priveliged! Only another four weeks and I'll get to see them again.

Lucky me!

Tracey Sharp we have just spent the entire afternoon on the phone to each other!!! This was a cheap attempt to keep yourself in the top two posting charts!!!!!

Wibbs - because the babies are so big now, they don't all fit on one screen, so they measured the head and then checked the spine - this was amazing, you could see every single bone and the sonographer counted them and checked there weren't any missing, then they looked at arms and legs and measured them. They managed to squeeze them onto two separate scan photos - the expense of twins starts now. We had to pay TWICE!

Its a fantastic scan, it lasts for ages and its really detailed. We were probably in there for about half an hour. I was desperately trying to peak between the legs to see if there was any sign of a todger but twin two wouldn't keep still long enough and he is the one I'm convinced is a boy!!

I'm glad I didn't find out for sure because the guessing still goes on - I have to have something to occupy me during the next few weeks!!

I've been thinking about Val a lot too - I'll send her an email and let you know if I hear anything!

Off to eat something nice, I can hear the Marks and Spencers cream cake shouting at me from the fridge!!!!

Nikola H - you did not have to reply so you are trying to catch me up - where are our US buddies - Becky has vanished since November and does not even know I am pg with twins!
Glad all ok - we don't have to pay for scans if we don't want - they ask for a contribution in a box outside so with twins I will help myself!

TS

We don't have to pay for the actual scan, we have to pay for the picture - £2.50. So cos its twins we have to pay £5!! Worth every penny!!!
