Question about sleeping?????

Post by Dagny »

Hello Everyone

I have read in one of my books that after 14 weeks you shouldn't lie/sleep flat on your back. Reason being is that the uterus is heavier and pushes down on a main artery which cuts blood off to the uterus/placenta.

:?: Is this correct or is it just rubbish?

I always lie on my back and since reading this have got a bit worried. I am trying to sleep on my side now but always end up waking up on my back. My DH has even woken me up to tell me to turn onto my side, even he has become paranoid.

Please help

Love a worried :? Dagny x

Hi Dagny!

I slept on my back throughout my pregnancy because I had the most awful heartburn and it was the only thing that stopped me feeling constantly sick. It had no ill-effects on my two, who had no problems when born at 39 weeks. So try not to worry.

Hi Dagny,

I also read this and stressed about it as I found I was waking up on my back in the middle of the night. I was told by my midwife not to worry about it. If the baby is in any danger you will find out - you may become breathless and feel faint.

I sleep mainly on my side now, but occasionally end up on my back and I only have a week to go now.

Chill out and get as much sleep as you can !!

Hi Dagny,

I also heard this and my midwife also mentioned it to me would you believe. I don't lie on my back anyway so it doesn't affect me, but like people have said they have slept on there backs and its not done any harm to there babies. You may find you feel a little lightheaded or so when you wake up, sorry I can't be anymore helpful.

I read that you are supposed to sleep on your left side and not your back or right side - this is something to do with getting the blood to the baby. I normally start off on my left and wake up 'somewhere else.' If I have bad heartburn I also tend to sleep on my back (with my stack of pillows) as this is the only way it eases off.
As I can feel baby suggs move now I dont get half as worried if I wake up in the wrong position.
When I've asked other people about sleeping they've not even known there was a right and wrong way to 'do it'.
Sleep whichever way is comfortable.

Thanks Guys

I have got myself into a spin about it and loosing sleep so your replies have helped. Someone told me to sew a tennis ball into the back of my nightshirt like snorers have to do but I draw the line at that sort of thing. I will speak to my midwife about it too or should I say 'midhusband' as I have been told the new midwife is a man!

This whole pregnancy has been ar$e about face as I didn't have sex to get pregnant, I got impregnated by a woman whilst DH watched and now I have a male midwife  ! What ever next?

Hi Dagny,

Yeah I would say to speak to your midwife, mmmm :x about male midwife :x not heard that one before, so maybe your in for a shock. You've just put a good idea into my head I have to get a tennis ball and sew it 2 something my DH can wear. He doesn't always snore but when he does I could go mad ( I know I already am) and it gets on my nerves, thats a good idea hadn't thought of that one, that will learn him to snore

Hi Dagny,
Thanks goodness its not just me whose parnoid about sleeping on their back! :D
DH has this bloody book called ' how to keep a pregnant woman happy' and that says I shouldn't sleep on my back as it will cut off the blood supply to the baby. So I try to sleep on my side but as I much more comfortable on my back I have vary restless night!
This book is the bain of my life - and it doesn't even mention doing the ironing, hoovering and cooking. Instaed it has advice like ' making sure the pathway from my side of the bed to the loo is clear for when I get up during the night'!!! or that after the baby if my weight loss isn't going too well then he's to tactfully suggest a dieting class!!! I know where the book would end up if he did!!! :?

Hi there,
I too have only just heard this & I'm 30 weeks - slept on back right the way through.
What the midwife told me is not to lie absolutely flat as when you're further on, it is the only time you can faint lying down as the weight of your bump can restrict air...I said I naturally sleep on my side but have been unable to when pregnant and she said I've obviously got enough pillows under my head/neck so that's fine - that's why when they see you at the clinic, the bed is raised slightly at the top and not flat...
I've now bought one of these maternity pillows to try and help me sleep on my side, but I end up just propping it below my neck!!!
Hope this helps...
