Travel in first trimester - question

Hi All

Congrats to everyone on their pregnancies!!

I had a very recent BFP, and am only 18 dpo at the moment - so its very early days!!

I wondered if any of you had travelled/have plans to or had advice from your re around travel in the first trimester??

I am due on a business trip in a few weeks which involves a long haul flight to the US and a busy week.

On the one hand I feel very uncomfortable with traveling (even though my clinic said it was fine) . . . but on the other hand – it is going to go down like a total lead balloon if I tell work I can't go and I really don't want them to know am pregnant yet. I know these latter points don't matter in the scheme of things - but feel in a real quandry.

Canceling the trip before I even know if I have a successful U/S (the earliest is literally the day before i would leave) - seems a little crazy.

What would you guys do?

Hi Melo ~

Congrats on your BFP! I think traveling is ok, just follow the rules of your first few weeks (no lifting, etc). I was going to travel actually during my 2WW and my nurse said to stand up and walk around a lot to keep from getting stiff. Also, are you on PIO shots or prog suppos? That's something else to consider if you are on the shots, who will give them to you while you are away?

Just be careful and don't lift or do anything strenuous and you should be fine.

I was told it was ok to travel in the first trimester but I chose not to because I knew first three months were still risky and did not want to have to deal with it in a strange city if I required medical attention.

Since you have a business trip, it may be wise to ask your ob for all the medical records and keep it with you in case you have to run to the ER for any thing.

Hello, there. I travel all the time for my job and while it is difficult - esp as I get further along - I would not worry much about it. When I did so in my 1st trimester, I just tried to be very careful with the lifting part. I asked for help wherever I went - the airport, the rental car place, the hotel, etc. I paid a couple of bucks to everyone to lift my bag for me. People are so nice when you mention you are in the early weeks of your pregnancy and not supposed to lift anything.

Also, even though I am not supposed to lift heavy stuff now, with travel - you can't avoid it sometimes. I lifted a 50 pound piece of luggage a couple of weeks ago into my rental car and me and baby are fine! Just try to avoid it at all costs! At the rental car place, I usually leave my bag inside, walk out and go get the rental car, and then come back around and ask someone to lift it in for me that works there. On the rental car buses, I just kind of stand there and wait for someone to offer assistance in helping me get my bag onto the bus. Again, people are so helpful. It helps more now as I am starting to show - people always help preggo women!

Just be careful and ALWAYS ask for help. Ask the person in the seat next to you to lift your bag up above if you bring one on and always check the heavy piece on to your destination.

Oh - and for a good laugh - I had to go to our home office at 9 weeks pregnant and was still on my PIO shots. I had never given one to myself before as my husband always does it!! I had to ask a co-worker (thank God I work for a health insurance company so she was a nurse!!) to give me the shot as I bent over a conference room table as another co-worker held the door closed. No shame in my game anymore!! I hope my son one day appreciates what his mom did for him!!

Hi Guys
Thanks for all your comments - I decided to talk to my manager - and he took things out of my hands by saying - no they weren't happy for me to go! So very relieved. So just have my fingers crossed now that I get to the U/S okay.
