Pregnancy after BFN

Post by wantamiraclebaby »

Hello ladies a little background of me. I do not have any tubes due to ectopic pregnancies (4) and a hydrosalpins. that is our only issue. Anyway, we did a 3 day transfer of 2-8 celled embies and unfortunately nothing took. So, we are onto another IVF cycle (although I have one frostie left). Anyway, we will be using the same protocol as the doc think I responded well to the last cycle. I got 30 eggs and only 3 fertilized b/c the others weren't mature...I only stimmed for 9 days. anyway. For the ladies who got a BFN on their first IVF cycle and a positive on their second what did you or your doc do differently the second, third...etc time around? I know this is a trial and error and I DO KNOW THAT IT IS IN GOD'S HANDS!!!! But, I see so many women get bfn the first time and bfp the second time.

thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the board. Don't give up!!! I know it's easier said than done. I've been there and done that. I had retrieved 16 eggs from my right and 19 from my left. With all of that done, only 7 embryos were transferrable.

We did a ET back in May '07 with 4 (category A). Nothing took. It was the most devastating time of my life. It took me months to swing back to my "normal" self, pre-transfer state. Then in later in October, my husband and I decided to do the FET with the remaining frosties. We were left speechless when the IVF clinic nurse called with our BFP.

Hi tryw8-
I know how frustrating it is especially after producing so many eggs and only being able to use a few. I had to go through ivf 3 times. The first time of course is experimentation b/c you don't know what the drugs are going to do and what is going to work. I had 21 eggs and only had 6 good ones out of the batch. Then only 2 were classifed as 2's. The second time the dr didn't want as many eggs b/c he said even though I produced alot many of them were not mature enough to use so he changed the meds I only produced 15 however 10 were good. BUT I still had to do a day 3 transfer and we put 3 in instead of 2 which of course didn't take. The third time the dr wanted to change my meds one more time b/c the egg production was better as in quality and wanted to get me to the day 5 transfer. Sure enough he tweeked things and I am now 7 and 1/2 months pregnant with twin girls. I think the main thing to remember is ivf is not an exact science and each person is different and responds differently to different meds. It sucks to be put through all the aggrivation and frustration but if you keep to it and the dr is assuring things will work they will.
Hang in there and good luck!

Hi Miracle baby,
I think anytime you get a BFN, you didn't "respond well" to the protocal. 30 eggs & only 3 being mature makes me suspicious, too. You're so young, I think you have a great chance at getting pregnant & having a baby, but I would really look into the success rates at your current clinic & other clinics that you could possibly travel to.
My first IVF cycle I made about 20 eggs & I think maybe about 10 of them fertilized with ICSI. After a 3 day transfer of 3 very good embies, we got a BFN. Our MD just wanted to do the same thing again because I "responded well." That just didn't sit well with me. Yes, IVF is a bit of a roll of the dice but I just couldn't see paying another $10,000 to do the same exact thing.
So after a couple of years of thinking about it, considering adoption, etc, we found a clinic by our home that actually had MUCH high success rates than the previous one & got qualified for the shared risk program. It still took 2 more IVF attempts & one FET, but I finally got pregnant. The BIG difference in the new clinic is that the MD was very proactive with changing up the protocal from one attempt to another & also testing, testing, & retesting me for possible problems. Since we signed up for a shared risk, they really did not want to have to return our $.
One thing I was told by my MD was that since I was making so many eggs but not getting pregnant, it was possible that the stim meds were making my uterus/endometrium irritable. The last IVF I was on a microdose flare cycle -way lower doses of the meds, and it worked. So who knows? Maybe he was right about that.
Anyway, my advice would be to hang in there & keep the faith, but really look into your current clinic & if it's time for a change.
Good Luck,
