progesterone injection reaction

Post by valerie68 »

Hello everyone,
I'm totally new to this forum and it has been a pleasure to read a lot of the comments that were posted.
I hope someone can help me figure out what to do about a reaction to progesterone injections. I had a transfer on 04/24 and started the progesterone the 20th. In some cases it goes well and other times it leaves me with a rash and a swollen area below the injection site. I've tried ice and heat and nothing seems to help.
Does anyone know? It's becoming more and more difficult to find a spot to inject.
My hcg will be tested on 05/05. The waiting drives you a little nuts because I look for any signs of pregnancy as so many of you do too...you just can't help it !

Good luck to all of you... and lots of baby dust !!

I get the rash of red bumps too and it itches like hell! I have dh wipe the area with a hot washcloth afterwards to try to wipe away any that seeped out. My clinic switches us to the one a week shot when you get to seeing hearbeats so I always switch then and the rash goes away! HTH!

Thanks Jessica for your advice. I've heated the area before injection, massaging it so the oil penetrates better and applying more heat for awhile afterwards, and it seems to help. The rash and swelling is so bad on one side that I'm doing injections several days in a row on one side only. So far so good. Hope this helps other so that they don't have to go through what I'm going through.

Best of luck to all of you.

Valerie,

I just wanted to let you know that during my first IVF I had a major reaction to the PIO. I thought it was normal so I just kept injecting. I switched to the other side just like you and still had a huge lump on both cheeks. It was really red and puffy. I don't know if this is the same experience you are having but I wanted to let you know my reaction, just in case. I went into my RE and they said that I was having an allergic reaction to the oil the progesterone was in. She asked me why I didn't come in sooner! I guess I just felt like I could tough it out. I just thought that you might want to show your RE to be on the safe side. There are alternatives to the PIO.

Either way, good luck to you!

There are alternatives to injection. There are suppositories, gels, and an effervescent tablet. They work. In fact, the gels and the tablet are the only drugs that are FDA-approved for this use.

There are also pills, but these are considered to weak to work by themselves. They can supplement another form, though.

Perhaps your clinic would have mercy on you and allow a less painful form of progesterone delivery?

Thank you all for your advice. After all this, my doctor took me off the injection because the allergic reaction was too much. I feel relieved to be able to use vaginal tablets. I hope this will work out better. Maybe I wish I had not waited so long but I didn't want to sound like a nag.

Good luck to all !
