please can you help me understand something. Tonight I had some cramping and a little brown spotting. It freaked me out because I'm 5 weeks and 2 days and this is just like last time when I did this at 5 weeks then miscarried.
I went into work and an OB doc did an US for me. At first he looked with the abdominal probe. We saw a gestational sac that measured right for dates, a yolk sac and a fetal pole. We also all saw a heartbeat.......or so I thought. When he investigated further with the vaginal probe he said he couldn't see a heartbeat after all. Is it possible we all (including the doc) imagined it when he did it abdominally? Is it an inidicator of a definite miscarriage if there is no heartbeat at 5 weeks 2 days? I'm really worried and would rathe rknow now if this one is going to end too. It seems like this is a repeater of the last pregnancy...everything goes well until 5 weeks.

Not to worry.
5 weeks 2 days is usually too early for a heartbeat. It's routine NOT to see one at that age. It usually shows up at around 6 weeks.
Keep your clinic informed. They may want to do their own U/S.
Thouht I would "bud in" here to hopefully ease your mind.....My RE wasn't able to see my babies heartbeat to almost 7weeks...!!!!! I am now 25 weeks pregnant.
Thanks Ghost......I feel much better. I have read that but then read also that the heart does beat at 5 weeks.....too confusing. I'll stick with your info and advice and I am going to let my doc know today.

I've read lots of posts on this forum where a heartbeat wasn't seen until nearly 7 weeks. My clinic didn't do our first u/s till 6 weeks 5 days. About your confusion- perhaps a heartbeat exists at 5 weeks, but cannot always be detected by u/s. Just a logical guess. I am pulling for you. Hang in there!
