IUI with poor sperm?

Post by BichonMom »

Hi, I am beginning to wonder if we were fast tracked too fast. I am 31 and my DH is 41. he has really poor sprem if all aspects so we were told to go right to IVF w. ICSI. we did one cycle, 23 eggs, 12 matured, 4 fertilized and transferred 3, BFN!! DH has been doing acupuncture and vitamins and he quality has improved alot!! Should we try IUI? Can we have success with IUI or IVF w. ISCI really our only option? Of course my questions are coming from the fact that our procedure cost us $23000 to start with OUCH!!!

Any advise or success stories or research you can provide I would appreciate
Thanks!!

Hi
Im not a nurse but I think isci would be your best option. I used iui with donor sperm which was A grade and it still took two cycles to get a bfp. We tryed isci with dh sperm but got zero fertilization. I know what you are saying about the money!! We used all our savings and took out a loan for the rest of it.

I hope it all works out for you!!

Thanks Kery!! I read your post and think you are right. we are going to ask the RE if DH's #'s improve again (he has been doing acupuncture 2x a week, vitamins, and eating so much better) if there is a chance but I am not going to hold out hope.

That is great the your DH considered doing donor sperm. Mine won't even consider it which is hard for me to take but I have to accept how he feels even if I don't agree and move on. All love and marriage it great :o) really it is. He has been doing all the right things in other ways but I have to say b/w you and me...i wish he would consider donor sperm because I know he will be an excellent father!!

Congrats on your BFP...and I am hoping you have a happy and healthy pregnancy and baby soon! "Hugs*

My dh was just the same. He said "no way will we use a donor!!" He said his for a while but with some heart to heart talks and time to think about it he did come around to the idea.

I'll second what Kery said - it took a while for my DH to agree, but he's realised that there are more things to being a father than just whose sperm is used.

However, I really hope that the procedure works for you with DH's sperm.

Thanks!! I guess my feeling is we will try as much as we can with DH's sperm in the hopes it will work. but once the $$ runs out he might be open to other options. I guess he isn't right now because we can use ISCI and it got us 4 embies last time. It nice to hear though that is might still be an option and that your Dh's did come around to this!!

Baby dust and Gl to you both!!!

Hi BichonMom~

I would say that you have a much better chance with IVF w/ICSI. IUI's are usually done with men that have good sperm counts (over 20-30 million), motility, morphology, etc. And even with grade A sperm donors, it's still not a "fool proof" method.

I'm going to be starting my 3rd IVF w/ICSI so I know what you're facing. It's VERY frustrating especially since I have checked out ok and on our 2nd cycle we did get pregnant but had a natural M/C at 11 weeks after being told at 6 weeks we had a basically "empty sac" and at 8 weeks, nothing really changed much so I went off of the Endometrin (progesterone) and my prenatal vitamin and baby aspirin and it took 3 more weeks for me to M/C naturally (I didn't want to go the D&C route).

With male factor inferility, ICSI really is the best option. I'm surprised that your doc would even do IUI.

Good luck to you and God Bless.

Thx Stacey, for the reply, sorry i just noticed it now. No our Dr is not recommending the IUI at all, I was just wondering. I really hate IVF and and IUI sounds like a dream compared.

Best of luck to you on your 3rd IVF. They say the 3rd is a charm and I am hoping it works for you!!

Dear BichonMom~

Thank you for your positive wishes for IVF #3! And you're right, IVF IS very demanding on your body, mind, emotions, etc. but for me since DH had a vasectomy reversal and has since had a low sperm count, that's all that we can do. I'm just thankful that I'm healthy so we're only battling one issue which we know that ICSI can conquer. And with each cycle we're getting closer and closer...IVF #2 did result in a pregnancy but unfortunately resulted in M/C but now I'm one step closer because I KNOW that I can get pregnant. I've been trying my best to look at all this more positively because it can make you crazy if you don't. My clinic is extremely positive so that helps too.

I wish you all the best for IVF #2! Stay POSITIVE!!! We're all in this together!
