12.5 weeks pregnant with Twins and spotting again.

Post by stephjim »

Wednesday morning I got up and went to the bathroom before work and got a bad surprise. When I wiped, there was dark red blood on the tissue. I of course freaked out and got my husband up and called into to work and called the doc office. We went in and everything was fine. The doctor said it was common this time during the pregnancy especially with twins because there is a lot of blood going to the placenta and the cervix. I had no cramping so I should not worry. I had my first trimester US for the downs, etc with the high risk doc and both babies again were fine doing flips, etc. I have had really nothing but brown spotting since Wed.
Today I woke up and it is red again. Now, when I woke up my bladder was really full and there was no blood in my underwear but when I wiped that dark red blood was there again. I did not want to call the doc quite yet at 330am because again no cramping. I will call at around 7am and see if I should go to the emergency room.

Has this happened to anyone around this same time? I just don't know if I should relax or freak out. YOu know?

Yes this happened to me with twins starting out at week 12 and continued until week 16. It turned out to be a subchrionic hematoma in the uterus and was independent of the babies. The blood went from dark red to spotting and was mainly there when I wiped. Sometimes it would be in the toilet bowl after.

All was fine and I'm now 31 weeks along. Scary thing to go through. I would suggest as many scans as you need to put your mind at ease. I was having one a week and bought myself a fetal doppler to detect the heartbeats in between visits. This is the only thing that got me through.

I hope yours doesn't last as long as mine. It's a stressful time.

Thanks Dexter. I appreciate that. However they did not see anything on the scans indicating any bleeding internally. Were they able to see yours on the scan? If it does it again before Monday without cramping, I will ask for them to see me Monday, I am off that day and come in for a scan. My next one is with the high risk doc Friday the 13th of June to check my cervix. I have had to Leep procedures before where they have removed part of my cervix and they want to make sure it is holding up. So they will look at them then too.

I might just get the fetal doppler if I can find a decently priced one. I wonder if the dopplers at work are strong enough to pick it up We use them to get pulse's in feet if we cannot find them. I am a nurse.

Congrats on your BFP!

I had the same thing happen to me but at nine weeks. (I'm pregnant with a singleton, though.) I was released to my OB/GYN @ 7 weeks. He wasn't that worried. He just increased my 2cc Projesterone AM injections to 2cc in the AM and PM for two weeks then dropped back down to only morning injections. To this day, I'm still on the 2cc injections but once a week until next week (week 30). He reduced it again to weekly shots @ week 24.

I haven't had a spotting incident since week 9. I tried taking it easy as he recommended. We also considered getting a fetal doppler. Prices were out of our range. Then we found a place that we could rent one. But my DH decided against it since I've been on recommended weekly appointments with my OB/GYN since week 7.

Take care and keep us informed.

Congrats on your twins! I am 16.5 weeks with identicals. I had a bleeding episode at 10.5 weeks and after a few days, they were finally able to see on the u/s that I had a subchorionic hematoma. I have bled red a couple of times and in between passed a couple of blood clots. I have been on bedrest because of it for the last 6 weeks. I still have brown spotting daily. But, like the earlier post said, the hematoma is having no effect on the health of my babies. I'm glad to hear you are seeing a peri. It's very important. I am also have frequent u/s because I had a cone biopsy which could cause incompetent cervix. So far it's holding up and measuring long and closed! I am sure the bleeding is nothing, but I would make sure they continue to look for a hematoma. I was told I had to stay on bedrest until I could go 10 days in a row with no bleeding or spotting. So far I haven't even made it 1 day. Keep us posted. I am sure all will be fine!

Well I thought it was almost overwith last night and 4am this morning I woke up and it was back to red. I layed down and calmed down and after a couple of hours it was going back to brown. I called the nurse and she said as long as I am not cramping and that I am not soaking a pad, then don't worry. I am just seeing it when I wipe. So if it continues I might insist on another scan Monday. I have to work tomorrow so I hope it behaves itself.

Stephjim,

One thing I noticed with my persistant bleeding was just when I thought it had stopped, another red blood/spotting episode would occur. It was devastating and I even had an anxiety attack at one stage and almost fainted. It was unbearable. I also found bedrest worsened my bleeding and it seemed to get better when I was upright. Not sure why??

As for the initial scan at the hospital to see where the bleeding was coming from, no they could not detect anything. They just reassured me that the babies were fine and sent me home and said to come back if it got heavier or if cramping was involved. Once I got a high-res scan done at the specialist, it showed there was bleeding between the "twin membrane" and also a clot just above the cervix which was making it's way out. They classified it as "partial clot obstruction" which translated to a subchorionic hematoma. Over time they hoped to see the clot bleed it's way out and get smaller but infact it got bigger over the next 3 weeks until it finally subsided. It was never bigger than the babies though which was some relief. I think with blood clots it only poses a risk when it's very early on in the pregnancy and the clots are bigger than the embryo itself.

My doc always said the "blood" was better out than in, so I visualised getting rid of the clot and healing. Like I said, it was 4 weeks of hell. Here in Australia we can rent the dopplers so it didn't work out too expensive. Have you tried ebay or other on line sites? They might be able to offer a cheaper alternative.

As hard as it is, try to hang in there and get a high tech scan that can maybe give you some idea as to what's going on. On that note also, I had a friend with a singleton who bled for 4 weeks also (from week 10) and they found no cause for the bleeding so I guess it just sometimes happens?? She was gushing red blood and was admitted to ER twice. Her son is now 10 months old. Another Mum at my multiple births club had bleeding with no apparent cause and is now 26 weeks along. Testing time, but it eventually resolved itself.

Hope this has helped put you a little more at ease.

One more thing, the blood pools overnight which is why the bleeding is often red/heavier in the early hours of the morning or when you get up after a long period of bed rest. I found my bleeding was always at 4/5am, then died off a bit and was only there when I wiped, only to repeat the cycle in the morning.

Well it has been brown since about two hours after the red. I actually am doing an experiment and am going to stop drinking anything a couple hours before bedtime so that I don't wake up with the full bladder to see if that helps. I am just scared and trying not to worry at the same time. I am a nurse and only have two more days this week Tue and Thur and then off for 8 days so hopefully that will help. I see the doc Friday the 13th. As far as the high res. I did go to the high risk doc last Thur and they did the nuchal scan, do they use the high res for that? They did not see anything with that scan either. They are all just contributing it to the large amounts of blood flow to both placentas and the cervix. I said before that I was scared of being put on bedrest. At this point I don't care if they put me on it. I will figure out a way to pay my bills. I want these babies too bad and I will do what it takes to get them. :)

Hello, I can also say it also happened to me. I am also 12weeks preg. with twins. I bleed at 5 weeks than again at 10 weeks. I bleed so much the first time I thought we had Mc. well thats when I found out twins. I soaked pads within 10 min between both times. I traveled to the doc and hospital as well as my IVF doctor every week. I'm so scaried I go to my doc. once a week. They don't know why but also seen what they think or thought was fluid. What ever it is, it seems to drain, but not harm the babies. so I know how you feel. I really think its natural with IVF and twins to spot but any blood is very scary. My girlfriend has 4 month ols twins and said the same thing happened to her. I'm just taking one day at a time. I'm listening to my doc. on on my feet 4 hours a day and trying to relax as much as poss. I wish all of us the best, .....and I thought IVF was hard
