Michelle - I have my diabetes screening Monday morning. It is a 1 hour test and I was told that I could eat breakfast, but not to eat anything overly sugary (like a doughnut). I will have my normal cereal (Kashi Go Lean) probably.

LostGirl - I have heard that the sleep/wake cycle that the little one has in utero carries over later. Sigh. It does seem like s/he is awake an awful lot!! I notice it more at night because that is when I am still and paying attention. I know that movement of the mother lulls them to sleep and is, perhaps, whey we don't feel as much during the day.

The list from my doctor of DO NOT TAKE includes:
Asprin
Ibuprofen
Baking soda
peptobismol

For heartburn, it says take tums or Maalox or amphogel.

I started going back to the gym this week and my back hurts a little less. However, I feel like everyone is STARING at me. Paronoid, right? I thought that a family place like the YMCA would be 'used to' seeing pregnant women, but I have yet to see anyone else as obviously pregnant as me.

Also, people are saying moderately rude things to me sometimes. I need to develop a thicker skin, but how does one reply to comments like, "you are bigger than I expected", or " are you sure there aren't two in there?". I noticed that women that have children stick to "you look great" no matter how I look. It is much appreciated.

MLB,
Try not to pay attention to those who are rude.
As for the baby, lately she moves a lot. I had an OB appointment yesterday and was told to start kicks count at 28 wks. I have also scheduled for a glucose test at 28 wks. However, my Dr. told me not to eat for about 8 hours before the test (anything!!! even no tick-tacks), but I can drink plenty of water. It is interesting how different providers have different opinions.
I hope everyone is doing fabulous at those days, before the third trimester comes.

Hi ladies,
I have my glucose test on June 24th. I can't wait for it because my ob-gyn keeps giving me heat about gaining 5 pounds in 4 weeks the last two times I've seen her. And I think non-diabetic test result will shut her up. Her comments demoralize me, and make me question myself even though, I am feeling great these days and am in good shape exercise-wise. (Still running once or twice a week, swimming twice a week, and walking 3-5 miles twice a week)

To be honest, I'm happy and feeling good. I have gotten used to the 20 pounds I've gained since the start of my pregnancy. My ob-gyn is the only thorn in my side.

Glad you're back to exercising Michelle, I think it will really help with your back. I swim with my old triathlon team, and it's shocking to me that I can keep up with 3/4 of other swimmers. Swimming is all about form, and weight is meaningless in the water, but I'm still surprised. Maybe it's all that extra blood and oxygen uptake. I have no clue, but I feel quite strong.

As for stares, I get them too. On the street, people just stare directly at the belly in wonder. ON the subway, ditto (but at least that gets me a seat most of the time!) As for the gym, people stare but it makes me feel strong because every time I go I think to myself, there are a lot of able-bodied non-pregnant people in bed right now and I dragged my butt here to maintain my fitness!

I guess it depends on the gym, but it sounds like your fellow gymgoers are unaccustomed to seeing a pregnant woman workout. Don't let them bother you.

A funny thing happened earlier this week at the gym. I was on a treadmill walking sandwiched between a man and a woman, both running. When I start running, I was at the pace of the woman, and not far off the man either. BOTH of them couldn't take that so they kept upping the speed till they were both going significantly faster than my 10-minute mile pace. Sort of makes you think, why does it take a pregnant lady for them to notice that they are not pushing themselves? If more people realized how important intensity is to losing weight and getting fit they would go hard at least once a week.
Anyway I found the two runners' responses hilarious!

Less funny though, are when people comment about how big I look or how I look ready to pop. I simply furrow my brow and tilt my head as if to say ARE YOU KIDDING ME? It tends to get the point across that their comment is inappropriate. And then I turn sideways and say something like does it look like a full-term baby could fit in there, I don't think so! You must not realize how big pregnant women are at full-term.
That usually shames them into silence.

LostGirl - Is it too late to switch doctors? I think yours sounds like a bit of a jerk. The midwife I saw during my last appointment at 25 weeks (we don't see doctors unless there is a problem and this midwife is a very small, very fit woman) didn't blink an eye at my 25 pound weight gain even when I admitted that it was a little more (~5lb) than I would have liked. She said, "compared to what we often see, you are doing great!" She also commented that my stomach muscles must be very strong based on how I carried the baby.

You will likely have this problem as well - she also mentioned that runners often have very strong pelvic floor muscles and this can cause problems in a vaginal birth. She has seen the baby get 'sucked' back up into the abdomen by this. In prenatal yoga, the teacher has us practice contracting our pelvic floor muscles and then relax them to ~10% to get used to being conscious of that muscle group and able to relax it at will.

MLB,
I don't think my ob-gyn's comments merit switching doctors. In every other way she's a super star and competent and we are on the same page. A little conflict is good for most relationships I'd argue.

I only run once a week now so I hardly think my pelvic floor muscles are all that strong. But all of my friends who I ran with in college, most of whom still run 3 times a week, all pushed their babies out no problem. But I agree relaxation is key to being able to let labor happen...

More and more I'm growing scared of labor, but also getting very excited. I want to meet my baby!

Lostgirl- I am with you on starting to be scared of labor. Every now and then I am getting some stomach cramps, and I wonder to myself, are these what contractions might feel like? And then I remind myself, no way, it is going to be alot worse...

MLB- It's funny how everyone's pregnancy is different. I am in the opposite boat as you guys...people still don't notice I am pregnant all the time. Granted, I am only a few pounds over my start weight. You would think I would be happy about this, but sometimes it depresses me. i am almost 7 months and when people have no clue, I think to myself, "wow, am I just fat normally, so people can't tell?" To me, I can clearly tell I am pregnant, so I expect others to notice too, but they don't.

Elca- good to hear from you, when is your glucose screening?

Busy weekend...today I am going to my goddaughters' dance recital. I love watching them, but I will have to listen to their mom nudge me on about when my daughter is old enough for dance school (which I depise) and don't want to think about now. Tomorrow is my best friends/future sister in laws bridal shower. Since I am maid of honor, I am hosting, so there is a lot to do. I am excited about seeing everyone though.

Well ladies, try and stay cool this weekend. It is our first official heat wave in the northeast...4 days of 90 degrees or more, hazy hot and humid. I think I am going to break down and bring out the ac's!

MLB- Don't forget to post about glucose screening for all of us to follow after you...thanks!

MLB, when do you get your screening results from yesterday's test? Hope it turned out fine. I leave on Wed for a vacation till June 23rd. I am so tired that I can't wait to get on that plane, and what's more it's over 100F in NYC since Saturday so it's been brutal.

How's the heat treating everyone?

I got nauseated from dehydration on Sunday, after walking less than 2 miles while meeting friends for brunch and running errands. It took so little for me to be out for the count, so be careful in the heat.

I have never been happier to work in an ice-box. My office is so cold that I always keep a sweater on my chair. But in this heat, I finally don't need it.
Take care, Lostgirl

I did have my GD test Monday. I asked the lab tech and she said their protocol considers anything over 135 positive. I didn't get my number, they just said I was fine. One note - about 3 hours after finishing the drink I crashed in a major way. I felt terrible - tired and unable to focus. I (had the luxary) of going home and taking a 1/2 hour nap and then felt fine. I think it was a sugar high/sugar low scenerio. The drink they give us tasted better than I anticipated!

Lostgirl - I also had a bad experience exercising (walking rather slowly) over the weekend. I went to a rails-to-trails trail and set out to walk for an hour or so. After an hour I saw a friend and had a break. THEN I made my mistake. I kept walking away from the car. I ended up walking 3.5 miles out - which meant 3.5 miles back. This was just 0.5 miles shorter than a family hike 2 weeks ago which ended fine. I think the difference is the 20+ degrees this time, not the mileage. Anyway, by this time it was 11:30 and really getting hot. I got back to my car at 1. The last 1.5 miles was misearable and I actually called DH to pick me up at a road crossing, but he was already an hour away on the golf course. The only thing that saved me from serious consequences was the fact that I had a Camelback on full of water (~2 Liters). The (slow) walk knocked me out for the rest of the day AND all of Sunday. My trip to the gym Monday was curtailed as well. That is the trouble with an out and back. You feel good on the way out, but generally still have to traverse the whole way back. So I learned my lesson. In the heat I must be more careful.

Michelle - I can understand your frustration with people not noticing! The good thing is that you were careful not to 'eat for 2' during your pregnancy so far and as a result you won't have too much weight to take off. Perhaps you can join some other new moms in a walking group and end up the year lighter than you started. Don't laugh, it happened to my good friend who was in your same situation! 2 months post-partum, she was 15lb LIGHTER than she started. If your body allows it, perhaps you could start walking on the beach in the morning or evening when school is over. Do I remember that you have a dog that loves that??

It is 55 degres here this morning. Finally the heat broke a little. Sadly, the forecast is for 90's on Friday - so I guess I need to enjoy it while it lasts.

Melissa,
Sorry to hear about your misadventures walking... It stinks to be held back by pregnancy but this heat is not to be messed with! It's much much better here in NYC today. Only 88!

Glad you passed your GD test with flying colors.

Hey Ladies,

Sorry it has been a while since I've posted. It has been hectic with my best firends bridal shower and school finally dwindling down. Just 3 more half days to go and I am out of work indefinitely and begin countdown to baby!

MLB- You do remember I have a dog, but she could really care less about going for walks. She just enjoys being around us. Sometimes I take her for a short walk and she is exhausted...kinda like me. I guess we both need the exercise. i am looking forward to starting to swim very soon.

I go for my glucose screening on thursday. MLB, did you eat or drink anything the morning of? If so, what did you have and how long before? I am glad the drink wasn't too bad. I am really bad at getting down bad tasting things, like liquid medicines. Hopefully I will have no problems.

Well i am off to some more relaxing for the weekend and some housework. I just ran out to get dh a small father's day present. I also got him a father-to-be card. I hope you all have a nice weekend.

Michelle - My dr's office gave me a sheet with specific instructions on what to do/not do for this glucose test. I was told to eat a 'normal' breakfast, but not to eat anything overly sugary like doughnuts. AFTER drinking the glucose drink, I was not to eat or drink anything except water. I would do exactly what your Dr. told you and call them to repeat the instructions if need be. The reason I say this is that every lab has their own different protocol. I know some labs say 150 is ok, but my lab cuts it off at 135 and the results of our reactions rely on the instructions we are all given are built into the protocol - hence the difference between the cutoffs.

That morning before the sugar drink I had 1cup Kashi GoLean cereal with 1/2 cup strawberries and 1 cup milk.

I will repeat that I really crashed about 3 hours after the sugar drink. All my pregnant local friends have experienced the same thing. So be prepared for this. I don't know how to 'fix' it, but it would be better not to be driving if/when it hits you.

Lostgirl - I have found lately that I don't recover from exercise as well as I did a few weeks ago. Do you find this as well? I feel great while I am exercising, but then knocked out for a day or even more sometimes. I'm just really weak kind of like the way you feel when you have the flu. Since the bad effects happen after I have stopped exercising I can't really 'listen to my body' like I read everywhere. Ideas?

Melissa,
Sorry to hear that you are crashing after exercise. I'm not sure what it could be. I do find that if I dont' hydrate well or eat potassium (bananas) or drink watered-down Gatorade that I get cramping in my legs. But i am able to exercise 5 days in a row before needing a day off. That said, I swim 2000m two times a week, run once, but the rest of what I do is easyyyyy. Walk 5 miles. Or do some squats and lunges in the living room. Maybe you should do two easy days for every hard one?

I'm vacationing with family in Europe and I've only managed to swim once in a week. Walked enough and did some yardwork while in the countryside. TOmorrow I demanded we go for a hike. So I hope to actually break a sweat and feel that "sleep so well" tiredness at day's end.

My back has been achy the past couple of days and I'm convinced it's due to sitting too long during roadtrips and not exercising.

That said, do what your

Lostgirl - I agree with the cause of your back pain - and also the solution. On days where I do not exercise and sit in front of a computer too long - much pain. If I can exercise, then no problem! Enjoy England. Sounds wonderful!! I think your advice is good - to take it easier - but I feel like I am taking it easy....guess I have to shift my idea of easy even lower.

hello ladies...

I had my glucose test yesterday. The drink wasn't bad at all. Mine was a cold clear liquid, almost like sprite. I had 2 minutes to drink 12 or 16 oz. Then in an hour she took my blood. My office does not call if it is good results, so they said if I don't hear anything by monday, then it came back fine. She did say it is pretty easy to fail the one hour though. There was another lady there taking the 3 hour. I really hope I don't have to go back for that, I have trouble sitting around for too long.

I had a visit while I was waiting for my blood to be drawn. Baby's heartbeat was good and easy to find, and my blood pressure was the best it has been this entire pregnancy (probably b/c school is over and I am officially out of work). I did gain another five lbs, but the dr said that was good since I didn't gain in the beginning. I am now 7 lbs over my start weight. I start going for appts every 2 weeks now.

Our dr told us to start looking for a pediatrician. Has anyone started looking into that yet?

How is everyone feeling? As I said, I am out of work now, so I might be posting a little more than normal. It is going to be a very long summer....
