Nuchal test

Post by helenlouise »

Hi,
we are due to have this test next week and i've suddenly been thinking about it. If it came back as a slightly higher risk, would i then want to risk m/c by having the invasive tests and what would i do if they came back with a high risk?
I realise everyone will have a different take on this, but i'm starting to wonder if theres any point in having a test that could lead to more worry for months and i have no idea how we'd feel if it was a high risk.

:?: worry of the week !!

Hello Helen

I really do understand how you are feeling. I was very worried about having the Nuchal test done but went ahead anyway. I don't know what we would have done if it came back high risk, I think we were to cross that bridge when we got to it.

I looked at it this way, I thought about all the people who I personally know and then people who I have heard of, friends of friends etc who have had babies which is a massive amount and only ONE of them has got a downs baby and that was 12 years ago. It really is quite rare.

There are some girls, however who didn't have the test as it wouldn't make a difference as they have wanted their baby or babies more than anything and whatever the outcome they would deal with it.

I am due my 20 week scan (done at 23 weeks at my hospital) and I am worried that there will be something wrong but if we didn't worry we wouldn't be human would we?

Good luck with whatever you decide to do I am sure it will be the right one whetever it is. Thinking of you.

Hi Helen,

Well we all have different opinions on this, at first I was going to have the scan done. But then Lee & I sat down and we talked about it and Lee said to me well if it come back high risk what we going to do go through with the other tests and risk m/c? and worry ourselves for the rest of the pregnancy? he said at the end of the day the results that come back wasn't 100% so why should be put ourselves through any heartache. We decided that we wouldn't have the tests because even if they did come back high risk I couldn't of had any further tests and risked having a m/c or losing my baby, we waited so long for this moment and no matter if something was wrong we would find our own ways of dealing with it, its our baby and we will love the baby no matter what.

Good Luck.

HI Helen

I was like you and unsure, but then dh and I sat down and decided regardless of what they said we would want to keep the babies, therefore why risk harming them. Only if the results proved something was going to affect the quality of life of the babies would we have done something. I have a cousin with Downs (he is 42 - they said he would only live till he was 10!) and he is fantastic, he has a job, a girlfriend, a normal life, so I knew that having a baby with Downs wouldn't stop me wanting to keep the baby.

the other factor that played an important decision for us (and might for you too) was that we are having twins and we're told that if we had to terminate one baby we could risk losing the other healthy baby. We were not willing to take this chance. Also by having twins the results were even less accurate.

We were told that the scan at 20 would show any major problems (eg no heart, kidneys, spina bifida etc) so we just kept everything crossed and hoped for the best and the 20 weeks scan showed everything to be ok.

Everyone has to make their own decisions, but if you are really unsure just ask yourself what you would do with the informaton and if the answer is nothing, then why bother.

Hi - I'm the same as you and have got my Nuchal Scan next Friday. I've scanned the internet for information and if nothing else it gives us a chance to have a look at baby again (not much to see @7wk scan). We have discussed the outcome if it was bad news and we will cross that if we are faced with it. I was 35 at Christmas so am just over the "old" age threshold. But I really don't fancy an Amnio. I've not really been much help, but as someone else mentioned - I know loads of people who have had kids and no problems.
When is your scan next week?
