First cycle BFN/Chemical, what are my chances with 2nd?

Post by IndieBlue »

First off, I have secondary infertility. I've carried a child before, and had absolutely no problems conceiving. I have a tubal factor IF.

With all that said, I just recently went through my first IVF cycle, which ended in a BFN :( I had an FSH of 6.4 on day 3, and I think my nurse said an E2 level of 55? My saline sonogram came back fine, my lining was 16 at retrieval, probably a bit thicker at transfer but my RE said it looked 'Good'. I had 7 eggs at retrieval, 5 fertilized naturally and we know there is no MF. We transferred 3 embryo's, a 6 cell and two 5 cells. The other 2 embryo's did not make it to freeze and on my paperwork it says they 'arrested'.

Oh and minor note, I tested or POAS everyday to watch the HCG trigger shot leave my system and it did, then on 6dpt, 7dpt I got positives, and 8dpt I got 2 negatives and a faint positive :( My BETA test was less than 5 at 11dpt, and AF showed up at 10dpt. So not sure if I just got that many false test or if I maybe had a chemical?

So again, was this just a bum cycle? How many of you had similar cycles and were able to get a positive after a 2nd cycle? When did you begin your second cycle? Did you change anything?

I really would LOVE IVF to work, as I don't want to go through having surgery on my tubes.....but I'm nervous about just paying for 1 more cycle, and leary of buying 3 through Shared Risk as I don't think I want to go through 3 more, plus FET's and the cost of that many meds.

So anyhow...I know each person is different, but just wanted to see if anyone else had any insight as to chances with a 2nd IVF cycle with my present numbers and age (34).

Hi, Sorry for you BFN. My clinic would class this as a chemical pregnancy, as they count anything over 2 is positive. I have had one BFN and 2 chemicals, and got pregnant on my 3rd FET. I was very lucky as i was a good responder and got 10 embryo's to freeze. They also found i had a clotting problem after my 2 chemicals, i added 75mg aspirin daily to my protocol and hey presto everything stuck.
good luck with whatever you decide to do, i am sure it will work for you, unfortunately it's a lottery as to when.

Thanks :) I've read a lot about people having clotting problems....and being on aspirin. Is there a way you can tell you have a clotting problem? Any signs? The study cycle I did, my first cycle, did not allow any meds not approved by them, including aspirin....so who knows if that would have helped.

Thanks again!

Indie-- I had a chemical my second cycle...now I am pregnant....don't give up hope! It took me three cycles, but it is well worth it. I know that financially it is stressful, you never know how many times its going to take. We are part of a shared risk program, and I am so happy I did it, otherwise we wouldn't have had the money to try after the 2nd! Good luck to you!

Wondering the same thing!

Indie- I don't have an answer for you but I am wondering the same exact things! Sounds like our situations are almost identical!!!

My initial testing was great FSH of 5.3, hydro was fine, my first cycle was "textbook". We were sure ivf would work for us on the first try. It did, but ended as a chemical. My first beta was 13, second was 25 and 3rd dropped to 16. We were devastated. It was so emotional.

I will begin taking bcp on 7/7 for IVF#2. I am scared to death but I can't imagine not trying at least one more time before giving up on our dream of a having a child together. From the way it sounds, RE will have me on the same protocal as before as I responded well to it the first time. I guess all I can do, is pray and hopefully this next time things will stick! (by the way, our insurance does not cover anything, so everything is out of pocket for us too)

Tubal reversal was discussed, but we decided to go with IVF because of the anesthesia, recovery time, my age (lord knows I am not getting any younger) higher risk of ectopic pregnancy and still the chance that it would not work and having to do IVF afterall.

I hope you get some good answers to your questions and I wish you the best of luck in whatever path you choose.

Hello Indie,

I've been following your journey and I'm so very sorry the first time did not work for you. In your previous posts, it sounded like it was the end of your road, but it seems you are considering another cycle. That's wonderful!

I'm sorry to say that there are no guarantees as to when and if it will work.
We are not that much different from other women that do not do ivf because many of them do not get pregnant right away, it takes them a few tries as well. They are just not as aware of exactly what is going on in their bodies as we are.

I had a chemical in early May, my numbers went to 174 and then fell back.
I have this positive feeling inside that I should try again and it will work, hopefully on this next try in August. Again, there are no guarantees.
I'm glad to be waiting, get my body and my mind back on track, do acupuncture which I think will greatly help, make a few changes in my diet and ALWAYS keep a positive outlook !

If you're thinking about going for another round, something inside is telling you that that's what you should do. Follow your heart knowing that it's always a chance you're taking, but you won't have any regrets for NOT doing it!

If I remember well, you've had a child before, that's great news that it does work for you, I don't see why it would not work again.
I wish you the very best and if you do decide to go ahead, we'll be there to support you. :D

Hugs,

Valerie

Thanks ladies :)

Valerie Well, I would LOVE to do another cycle...but I'm not taking one step towards that until I KNOW for a fact that it is what God wants for me. We only did this cycle because we found a study and it worked out well for us (financially and at the right time...etc). We were going to wait and do one locally at a smaller clinic next year. So again....we may still decide to do that local one....or another study might show up :) I know that I have a desire for another child, but again....I'm not going to do another cycle until I know that it's what I'm supposed to do.....as when we adopted we KNEW that was where we were being led and when roadblocks would come up....we felt okay because we knew it was all in his hands. Through this IVF cycle, there were some things that I thought were his leading but looking back it might have been my selfish desires leading me :(

I do agree though, about fertile women :) One question on the paperwork I filled out at the RE's office asked how long it took to conceive naturally....thinking back now it took 4-5 months with both of my bio children....so transferring 3 embryo's the first cycle only really 'counts' as 3 months. I feel better about a second cycle....but again, won't make that leap until I feel moved in that direction :)

Eva The tubal reversal scares me as well, just because of the unknown factor. If it doesn't work after 6 months....well okay, after a year....hmmm, must be blocked again, 5 years....ummmm, what if they aren't blocked and I get pregnant now!!! I don't want to be sitting there in that 'unknown' spot 5 or 10 years from now, wondering if I'm pregnant or if my tubes are blocked, open...etc. Praying we get another try in a year....but pretty sure that we won't go with the Shared Risk 6 cycle....that I think would be too much on us. I'm glad we're waiting though, I'm still having pinching cramps and such and starting up another cycle right now would just add stress on those lingering side effects of the previous cycle.

Hi Indieblue, sorry i did not get back sooner. I was sent to a recurrent miscarraige clinic after my second chemical, where i had numerous blood tests, the clotting issue came up as a result fo that. I was also testeed for immune problems and DH and myself for chromosone abnormalities, eeverything else came back clear.
Regarding another cycle my clinic make you wait 2 AF's after a chemical to allow your body time to recover.
Good luck
