ANTERIOR PLACENTA

Hello Everyone:

I wanted to ask if anyone has been diagnosed with anterior placenta. I am almost 19 weeks pg with a wonderful little girl, who will be named Katherine Sue (Katie). I went for a gender determination sono at 16 1/2 weeks, because I was too impatient to wait for 20 week anatomy scan to find out. I had thought that week that I had been feeling movement, it was like a tapping. It happened for a few consecutive days, but then it stopped.

When I had my 3d/4d sono, she told me that I have anterior placenta, which means my placenta is up front instead of the normal behind the baby. This is not a problem for me or the baby unless the placenta ends up too low and covers part of the cervix. This would mean that I have to have a C-section. The sono tech stated that what I had felt that week was probably gas moving through placenta, not the baby moving.

If that is the case, then I have not felt the baby move as of yet. I have had nothing like that feeling I did have since that time. I had my regular OB appointment yesterday and my OB called me "BORING", which is exactly what they want. He asked me if I felt any flutters or anything, but I can't say that I have.

I was just wondering if anyone else had been diagnosed with this, and if so, when did you start feeling the baby move. From much research (isn't the internet wonderful), I know that an anterior placenta means you usually feel the baby move later than other woman, but I wondered when I might start feeling my little girl move. I also know that it is hearter to get the heartbeat through the doppler with anterior placenta. This was accurate at my previous OB appt, where the nurse and doctor tried, and finally I had to have sonogram, because they couldnt' find it. With the sono, we saw it and it was nice and strong. At yesterday's appointment, it took a few minutes, but we got it and it was nice and strong.

I would appreciate any information anyone can give.

Hi Kris!

Glad to hear things with your little girl are well! When I went for an u/s at about 15 weeks they told me my placenta was laying low (which I know it is different than anterior) I was all nervous and researched the internet and scared myself. Well a few weeks later it moved up and everything was fine, so I am sure yours might still move. The first movements I felt were more like butterflies inside and it could be easily mistaken with gas You only start feeling the thumps a little later so I think you are right on schedule!

I also have an anterior placenta and I am a bigger girl...however, I know I felt Zachary at 12 weeks. It was like a little flutter. I have had virtually no gas and am sure it wasnt gas. LOL I didnt feel him again, till 16 weeks. However, I know that Zach is a very very active baby....so I am sure this is probably why, I feel him as often as I do.

Dont worry ...you will feel him more often very soon. My DH felt him on the outside finally this week at 25 weeks. We also got the home doppler thing and have been using it since 22/23 weeks...we dont always find the heartbeat...but we do hear him moving around ALOT. LOL

kbear - I have an anterior placenta as well. I was getting very frustrated not being able to feel my babies but it will happen! The first time I felt them and knew for sure it was them was at 20w4d. I could even see the movement on the outside of my belly, and of course DH was able to see and feel them as well. I have felt and seen the thumping every day since then (I am 22w1d today). It has brought such a sense of relief between appointments, although my pregnancy has been anything but "boring". I also was told that it takes longer to feel them with an anterior placenta, but believe me, you will feel them soon. Congrats on the "boring" pregnancy...it's the best kind to have!

You got great responses from the other ladies.
I am 18 weeks with twins and have not felt any real movement. I am very familiar what it feels like ( I have had three other preg this far along, two children) and I am sure I felt movement sooner than this, But still nothing yet.
It seems like with the anterior placenta you will feel it a little later, but I am sure it will be very soon!!!
Did you dr say how oftern they will monitor you and is there a chance it can change position?
