BFP & Bedrest after et

Post by joyanna »

Hi

Just wondering if you could share your story with me about bedrest after the et .........especially anyone who has got a BFP.

I am having my et at the end of July - all going well! My clinic tells me to take it easy on the day of the et ...but then get back to normal the next day but no lifting, hot baths etc. I am thinking of taking 3 - 4 days complete bedrest after the et ........any thoughts??

Hi Joyanna - Good luck with your IVF...is this your first cycle? I just finished my first cycle and got a BFP (DH and I are so excited!). From what I've seen, direction from REs regarding bedrest varies SIGNIFICANTLY. My RE had me on bedrest the day of transfer plus three additional days afterwards. Because of the way some holidays and other things fell, I also took a few additional days off after that...was not on bedrest, but took it easy, ran some errands, went for walks, tried to stay relaxed. Also, my RE had me lay down two hours after transfer before I was able to leave the office. I know several women who have left 15 minutes afterwards...so that varies as well.

My advice would be to try to take it easy as much as possible. I have a stressful job that requires travel, so I actually took the week between ER and my 5-day-transfer off as well. I didn't want stress to get in the way of a successful cycle. If I had a less stressful job, I probably wouldn't have taken so much time...but in hindsight...I am SO glad that I did!

Best of luck to you!!

joyanna - My RE had me lay down for 45 minutes after the ET then go home and lay around for the rest of the day. They also recommend taking it easy the following day, but said I didn't have to lay down. I did the same thing as Adsgirl, as I didn't want any work stress to get in the way. I actually stayed reclined on the couch for 3 days after ER and 3 days after ET and then just took it easy the following 2 days, but did not go back to work until the following week. My DH wouldn't even let me log on to work, as sometimes email gets me a bit crazy :) I know everyone is different, but I didn't want to jeapordize this cycle at all and my relaxation has paid off with a BFP! Good luck to you!!

My ET fell on a Friday so I just did bed rest all weekend. Otherwise Dr just said same day.
If you do a 5 day transfer there is a possibility of implantation that night or the next day, that is the main reason why I decided to stay on the couch all weekend, but I did get up every 2 hours and slowly walk around for circulation.

Good luck, I wish you the best!

I did try to lay down or recline most of the four days. DH wouldn't let me do anything. I appreciated that, actually. BTW, I also did AP after transfer (wanted to do it the day after, but that fell on a Sunday when my APist wasn't available...so I did it two days later).

hi Joyanna,

Congrats on your cycle and good luck!

The amount of time definitely varies from clinic to clinic....After my ER, they got 18 eggs, I was pretty uncomfortable. Most ladies on here were not though....by the time i went for my last ultrasound, the pa said my ovaries were just about touching so i was pretty swollen. After ER i had some discomfort after the day of. The day of I actually felt the best. I did drink a ton of gatorade to ward off OHSS and paid attention to my weight everyday. I was sore the second day but the next 3 days i really didn't feel good. I am pretty sure I had alittle fluid buildup in my abdomen as when I took a deep breath and laid flat to sleep it really, really hurt. Nothing that warranted my going to the doc but I had to sleep sitting up for many nights and that was tough. no weight gain though so all in all it could have gotten worse. By transfer day (day 6 for me) I felt a ton better.

At ET right after the procedure, my hips were propped on a pillow and I had to lay there for 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes I could empty my bladder and go home. I was told total bedrest that day, only getting up to use the restroom and any days after that light activity. I stayed home the next day and lounged around the house , but did not stay on bedrest. By the third day , i went into work for a half of day and was so tired since I hadn't done much in so long it was crazy :) Felt good to actually get out though. There is a piece of my that beleives some normal activity probably is good :) I will say, I didn't think I would feel that I needed the bedrest but after watching those embies go in on the U/S i wanted to suspend myself upside down from the ceiling to make sure they stayed where they should :) hahaha

All and all , unless you are running a marathon or lifting really heavy things, I don't think you are hindering anything by going on about your normal life after the day of transfer. I did get a positive! Beta 129 , next beta monday ;)

good luck to you I wish you all the best!!!!

Bella123, Adsgirl, Dakota, Angram - thank you so much for your detailed replies and huge congratulations to you, it is great to hear BFP stories.

This is my first 3rd fresh IVF cycle. I have a DD from my second cycle in 2006, Thank God. However, I had 3 failed FETs in the past 12 months and I really think that bedrest could be a factor for me - they transferred 2 good quality blastocysts for each fet and I got BFN each time . I have not been able to get as much rest as I wanted with the fets and I think this may be my last fresh cycle so I want to give it as good a chance as possible. I am going to try complete bedrest for 3 days after et with the walking around every 2 hours for circulation. My doctor is not a fan of any bedrest ....more of a 'it will work or it won't attitude' but my gut is telling me that I need a few days complete bedrest after the et. Adsgirl - I am doing ap this time as well ....so will chat to her about doing some ap after the transfer. Also, I had 5 days complete bedrest when I got pregnant with my dd. I literally stayed in bed all the time just getting up to get some food/drink/use bathroom ......so I think I will go with my gut and not the doc on this one!

In terms of resting and peeing after the et - i hadn't thought of that. Again my clinic is very much - you can pee and go! This is exactly what I did for the FETs but I am going to try and rest as long as possible after the et - it makes sense when you think about it.

Also, Bella123 - I will try the gatorade as well as I have had a tendency towards ohss in my previous fresh cycles. did you drink it during the stims as well?

Thanks for the tons of tips and good luck to you all and enjoy every minute of your pregnancy

I am 15 weeks pg and I was told to lay down for the rest of the ET day and then return to "normal activity" the following day minus lifting, sex, exercise. I did just that and went to work the next day where I have a job that is quite busy and on my feet apprx. 1/2 the day. My doctor said it's "normal" to do normal activity...people aren't laying around for days when they naturally conceive. However- if rest will make you feel better- do it....not complete bedrest, just relaxation!
