HELP?? shorten cervix at 20 weeks with twins.

Post by a mothers love »

Please any info you have for me will be great. I problem Im 20 week with twins. I was on bed rest for 1 weeks b/c my cervix shorting. I went for my u/s and found out my cervix was 2.0 I then had to stay in the hospt. I found out I had a infection, and take a stool softner, iron pills and a pill that stops contracions. No I havn't had any contractions but I guess for precaution. Well today i had a u/s and my cervix was 2.7 they said maybe b/c of the meds and complete bed rest. My doc told me I need a stitching. although not usually used for twins, It's the only thing that may help. It has it's problems, infections, or my sack my rupture. If I don't get it though I may deliver in 3 to 4 weeks with no good results. I can also just be on bed rest and pray I make it to 30 weeks. I'm worried b/c the stitching may not work, but I don't want to have second thoughts about what I could have did to save my babies. Please help.....

I am so sorry you are going through this! I had the same thing! And it started at 20 weeks! I think at 20 weeks I was 3cm still though. Then by 22 I was 2 something then shorter and shorter from there. I am now 30 weeks and 2 cm dilated and have been in and out of the hospital for it. I am on bed rest as well since 20 weeks. Did I mention I am twins also? They have not checked to see how short I am since I am dilated...just watching for signs of contractions and whatnot. Baby A is right there on my cervix. They did not really talk to me about getting sewn up even at 20 weeks. Are you even dilated? Are you funneling? Usually they will not sew you up unless you are dilated.

Also, take the stool softener it really helps out a lot and you dont want to be pushing too hard. Ask about taking procardia just as a precaution as well. I take it every 6 hours for contractions even if I am not having them.

You can hang in there! It is an emotional roller coaster but you will be fine. The cervix can ALWAYS change length. It is a very odd thing. Just stay in bed.

I replied over on Double Trouble, too, but just wanted to tell you to hang in there and trust your instincts. I know it is difficult to hear so many dift opinions from dr's (at least I did). You really have to weed through them and see what seems best for your scenerio. And I read online as much as possible (informative and scary all at the same time~!).
I have no regrets having the cerclage placed and I do believe it has changed my scenerio. I have not had to go on bedrest (knock on wood) and I am almost 21 weeks...
I was also placed on Celebrex after the cerclage was placed and it keeps things very calm down there (apparently).
One note on the cerclage if you do decide to have it...make sure you get a specialist that does the surgery ALL THE TIME to place it. I had to travel 3 hours to go to a specialist but it was WELL WORTH IT. Unfortunatly we live in very small town and my OB does place cerclage, but infrequently. It makes a big difference to have it placed as high as possible by someone that does it all the time...
GOOD LUCK and lie low...bed rest is difficult but way worth the outcome!!!!

Thank you so much for your support, I did receive info over Double Trouble. I felt guilty over getting a cerclage. I didn't think it was really going to work well with twins. I then realized I didn't come this far to give up. Yes this is a roller coaster and I'm willing to stay on the ride untill it's over. So thank you for your kind words, I really needed it. Ow I had the cerclage this morning, I feel good. no cramps and staying in the bed. Thanks again

I Love the name, I call my husband Sugababy. Thank you also, It's good to know you have someone else who went through the same thing and can share it with so many others. No I'm not dilated yet and have no contractions, but the doctors was scared because I started shortning really at 18 weeks and at 19 weeks it was 2.0 I did start funneling also. If I was 22 weeks shortning, they wouldn't preform the cerclage. I would have to just be on bed rest. I really don't mind bed rest, I just had to get used to not working.
I read so many different things on line. I do feel more comfy in knowing I have somthing in place though. So I wanted to thank you as well. Congrats on the twins.
Thanks again.

Hi,
I just wanted to wish you good luck and suggest you stay down, even with the cerclage. It sounds like you have an incompetent cervix and ost ladies still need some bedrest with a cerclage and twins. I lost my daughter to IC at 23 weeks. No one ever checked my cervical length and by the time I went to the hospital at 21 weeks and 3 days, I had bulging membranes and was 4 cm dilated. It was too late for a cerclage, but we tried one anyway. Unfortunately, my water broke during the procedure. I held on to 23 weeks, but that was not enough. Check out this IC support website & stay down. You can do this!

I am glad you got it! I do not think I was funneling that early on...I can not remember. But stay off your feet! There is a lady that goes to my church that every baby she has she has to get one at 3 months and be on bed rest from 4 months. So I praise her all the time because bed rest is just boring! But hopefully we will both carry as close to term! I am glad it did not hurt also because they were talking about that with me for a little second and I was scared. So best wishes!!!

Hi Girls ~

I am 23 weeks preggers with twins and also on modified bedrest due to shortening cervix and funneling. After a week on bedrest, my funneling had leveled out and my cervix had not changed, which was good news. I have heard great things about cerclages, but if your cervix continues to stay 2+, they may not need to do it. Take care of yourself and follow dr's orders!!! Bedrest sucks, I'm here to tell you! But, bedrest is a heck of a lot easier than tons of NICU time. I'm just starting my 3rd week of bedrest at home. Feel free to PM me if you want to chat!

Take care and stay positive!

By the way, have you ever checked out the message boards over on twinstuff.com? It is an awesome sight for twins, trips, etc. They have a special sub forum called Bedrest under the Expecting forum that has lots of great info on bedrest, cerclages, etc. I have found it to be an excellent source of info on multiples!
