postcode lottery

Post by alisonn »

im just so mad   i have recently moved to kent from
essex and i have just spoken with the midwife today about sorting
out a nuchal scan (which she advises due to my age 43) and have
been told i will have to pay for it privately at my previous docs if u are
over 37 they will pay for it, i only got round to registering with
the new docs last week and i should have waited !!!
My dp as usual said not to worry and get yourself all worked up,
and yes at the end of day after what we have payed privately
for the 4 ICSi treatments last year the cost of the scan is a drop
in the ocean, but there must be a lot of women out there
who cant afford it, why should it be any different depending on
your postcode.

This is an odd senario because in our area we automatically get a nuchal scan regardless of age (i'm 32) and we have decided to opt out and not have any of the tests. Seems that they could balance the tests between areas because not everyone will want one.

We were given info from our private clinic about tests and for info the nuchal was £100 and with blood screening was £140.

good luck with whatever you decide.

Hi Alison

We too got a Nuchal scan as routine. It seem utterly rediculous. I am not surprised you are cross. I would have thought because of your age you would defo have one par for the course.

Bloody money grabbing beaurocrats

Hope it gets resolved.

Lottery query

Post by Dawn Blake »

Helen

I think that is really bad, and I am a bit confused, as I am 31, live in Kent and didn't have to pay for my Nuchal scan. I would query this with your GP - what hospital is it under?

I am of the same opinion as you, we pay our way through X amount of private treatments (5 in my case), only to have to shell out even more money on this - arghhh!

It is a great experience having the scan though, as they baby is so much more developed, and bopping about!

Good luck and enjoy,

D x

alisonn, that is rubbish. i've never heard such a thing. nuchal scans are advised because we are higher risk, age as you know, if you were asking for one and were in a different category i'd understand. you should query it.
what i wouldn't be surprised about, but would be disgusted, is that it's because of ivf. i'm not knocking the nhs, but some of the policies make me swear.

if you are going to pay for it then consider going private. at least you'll get the results quicker for about the same price.

tks for listening, u always feel better once u have had a moan,
spoke with the NHS this morning and yes it is upto the individual
surgery what they do with there funding and how they spend it.
I have put a call into the doctor and shes going to ring me
trmw, trouble with me i get angry and then i get very uptight
which is not good, my dp is a always very calm and said we will
do it privately and not to worry.

Nuchal's

Alison

Just up the road from me, I am in Chelsfield!

Try and keep calm on the phone, I am sure he/she will be very understanding about the whole situation - well, I blimmin' well hope so anyway.

I am under the Princess Royal in Farnborough, as we are just outside the Sevenoaks borough, so won't be bumping into you at Pembury, but all the very very best of luck!

I always got mad on the phone but have learnt now it does not get me what I want - take a deep breath and be supernice - it might do the trick - explain how you feel and your concerns and you never know
At my hospital QMC in Nottingham - you get one if you are a)ivf and if you are over 35 - I hit both counts!
Good luck
