Allergic reaction after stopping progesterone shots! Help!!

Post by tortillachip »

I stopped taking my progesterone shots last Wednesday because I turned out to have a chemical pregnancy. Then on Monday I got my period and ever since I've noticed that my bottom has been crazily itching exactly where my progesterone shots had been. It wasn't that bad at first, but now it's a full blown rash on my bottom. Has anyone had this happen to them?

It's very common and it sounds definitely like an allergic reaction to the oil. The doctor needs to see it to make sure it's not turning into cellulitis which will require and antibiotic. For now as long as you don't have any allergies to medications you can take Benadryl for the itching. I would call your doc today.
I am an infertility nurse and I work in a major IVF facility. I am willing to answer questions and give guidance, however, since I am not treating you, only your physician can give you the most accurate information.

IVF nurse: I called my doc this morning and spoke to the nurse who said she had never heard of someone getting an allergic reaction after stopping the shots. I had her go ask the doc, as he was with a patient. He said that he has seen a few cases where the patient gets a rash after finishing PIO. The rash on both sides is pretty severe though, but the doc and nurse didn't seem concerned at all. They told me to use a antihistamine and calamine lotion. What is cellulitis?

Tortilla Chip....this happended to me last month, except i was still taking the shots, about two weeks into the prog shots (in cotton seed oil). I had received news that i had a positive beta, but a very low one, so they kept me on the prog shots until further beta tests could be run, even though they knew i had a rash. I ended up having to go to urgent care to have it treated. My bum was like one big cherry. The rash was everywhere i had the injections (on both sides) and it was itching like crazy. The urgent care doctor was hesitant about giving me anything since i did have a positive beta test, even though it was low, which indicated more than likely a tubal pregnancy. Ended up, my beta's dropped later that week, so I went ahead with what the urgent care doctor said. He gave me prednisone (lots of it: 6 pills for two days, 5 pills for two days, 4 pills for 2 days etc...all the way till one for two days) as well as a topical betamethazone cream to apply four times a day and chloritrimiton (sp), but I just took benadryl instead of the cholortrimoton (the pharmacist said it would be ok). I took my last prednisone last week.

I'm still suffering effects today, it hurts so bad where the rash is, and even though its calmed down quite a bit, its turned to a purplish color where the red rash was, it still aches and iches sometimes. Not sure if it will ever go away.

I would try to maybe go to your primary/general doctor, not your RE, and see what he/she says. You might need antibiotics, even though I never did. My lymphnodes were swollen in my groin, so i thought it was infected, but it wasn't. They can also give you a cortizone shot, to help speed it up, along with the prednisone.

Good luck! For my next FET, I will be taking another type of prog shot in a different type of oil, or maybe even just the supositories.

Thanks for your input Floridagirl. My rash seems to be clearing up on its own :) Thank God!
