problems DURING transfer ...

Post by teamvuch »

Hi everyone,
I have a question and hope anyone can help. I had DE ivf transfer 7/28/08. Perfect embryos (2). Everything looked great...Then the tranfer went in, the doctor accidentally JAMMED the speculum inside me! My whole body contracted. The doctor jumped, my DH did and the embryologist did as well! We all jumped! Silence for a few seconds. The doc apologized (he was reaching for something when his arm did this). The embryologist said ... immediately, "I have never seen that happen in 12 years!".....I had MAJOR cramps the WHOLE 2ww, starting RIGHT after transfer. (2x wanting to go to the ER)
Negative PG Beta test! Did they even have a chance? Thank u for replying. I am so confused... :?
Anyone have a similar problem?

Wow.

I don't have an answer for you, but just wanted to say I was sorry you had a BFN and had to experience that.

can't believe it

The Docs/nurse/embryologist are talking today and getting back to us. We think this was a major issue for the outcome ... I realize we were told we had 30% it would be negative, but don't you think we should have gotten a fair shot with a smooth transfer? We don't want to sue anyone and I believe in our REs and it WAS an honest mistake, I feel in my heart a little cheated :(

I absolutely feel that you deserve a fair shot. And I am certain that the RE didn't do it on purpose or it would have happened before. Like you said the nurse said they hadn't see that in 12 years.

However, if it is the cause, I think you should get a refund. IVF is very expensive. I hope it all works out

Hope for replys

Thank you Amanda for your replys. And good luck to you! I sure hope the 3rd time is a charm!
I would really like some feedback from others even if they have not had anything similar happen. I have been trying to find anything online about even potential Dr. errors during IVF.
Keep posting your own updates Amanda! Even though it gets stressful, it is very exciting ... all the steps! :D

I think that's awful. It seems to me they should offer the next ET to you free of charge to make up for it. At a minimum.

Here's to a BFP the next round!!!

Boy do I feel for you... I know EXACTLY how you feel. My very first time of IVF was a NIGHTMARE!!!
For one thing, my uterus is tipped which causes my cervix to be a little mis-shaped; however, everyone has said this should in no way cause any problems. Now, bare in mind that I had a hysterosalpingogram and a practice transfer and not had any problems; but the doctor who was doing those was not the one doing the transfer (they have "on call" weeks so the dr that does your retrieval is not necessarily the one doing your transfer).
The day of my first transfer I came with my full bladder as requested. Once in the proper position the guy started getting everything all situated. We all know how uncomfortable this is (full bladder, someone up in your business, and all the time some torture chamber gal pressing the ultrasound into your stomach until you almost pee yourself).
Long story short... this went on for 4 hours... yes you heard me right... 4 hours. All the time I had to listen to the dr and ultrasound tech making comments back and forth about how "the angels were really partying when they made me", they've never had this kind of problem before, and on and on... not things I needed to hear. I became hysterical after all of this thinking there was something majorly wrong with me to the point I ordered everyone out of the room including my husband and laid there balling for 15 minutes.
They decided they would try another dr, but after an hour of him trying and still having no luck they decided to put me under and had it done in 10 minutes. But after all that... how could it have worked. I was cramping so bad and a hysterical mess.

Needless to say... I was livid, traumatized, and not pregnant.

Then, for the next cycle they decided to put a laminary (spelling?) in about 4 wks ahead to open my cervix for easier entry (once put in it swells like a tampon and gets pulled out about 4 hrs later)... oh and they also put a stitch in my cervix so that when they did the transfer "they had something to grab on to". That transfer went ok... but still no success.

I finally switched clinics (not soon enough though) and have had two sonohystograms and two transfers since with no laminary, no stitch, and no problems. The last time worked, but I had a miscarriage- but at least I know it can work.
Also, when the new dr saw my cervix he wanted to know if I had ever had any surgery on it. I said no but they had put a stitch in it with the last time. He said he could tell.
I just hope they didn't do any damage... other than the emotional toll it took on me. My new dr now gives me valium prior to the transfer to keep me calm because I am honestly traumatized after that disaster the first time. He had really looked at my anatomy and said you just have to get the speculum in the right spot and no problems.

Sorry about what happened, they must give you a discount on the next one at least.

Best of Luck

NO, not quite. And unfortunately that was not the end of the unprofessional behavior of the doctor involved.
In fact, I had some issues with insurance where the two sides weren't agreeing about how to submit some of the surgery claims. Long story short they threatened to take me to collections over $60.00 The clinic wouldn't submit the charges as surgery (they were submitting as office visits) which caused a copay to exist, but my insurance stated I shouldn't have had to pay because the procedures took place at an actual outside hospital and were coded surgery. They went ahead and made a special payment to the doctor to avoid me going to collections.
I have to say never go to University of Iowa Hosp and Clinics for IVF!

teamvuch~ Hello I sympathize with you. After my BFN with my 1st IVF cycle I had a consult with my RE to go over and try and figure out what might have happened. One thing he made very clear was the ease of the transfer has an impact on the outcome. So with your's being difficult, my RE would definitely say that played a part.

Think about it...the embies are supposed to find a spot on the uterus to stick. When you are cramping you uterus is contracting making it very difficult for the embies to stick. This is one of the main reasons acupuncture is good for the uterus prior to and after transfer. It quiets the uterus and makes it receptive to the embies.

I sincerely hope that they give you a refund or another cycle. Clearly a big mistake was made and until you speak up and tell then that you mean business, they are going to sweep it under the rug. These REs think patients are dumb. Research what I was explaining to you, and go in there armed with this information and watch how he changes his tune. Good luck!!

Thank you for replies ...

Well, they called and agreed that the speculum accident could not be eliminated as a contributing factor in our BFN. We as humans are given opportunities to first apologize THEN make it right ... after an accident or mistake. Our IVF clinic has agreed to do just that, the right thing ...

As I have said since the beginning, I believe in our Dr.s. They are brilliant. We all have had accidents. I just thought we deserved a fair shot and thankfully, they did too! My DH and I are going to do some healing, then jump back on the horse! They will be doing an entire fresh cycle for the price of a frozen. Just as it can not be eliminated ... we also can not say it had anything to do with it.
Thank you for all your replies and stories. :) REALLY, thank you, thank you.
