Anyone going through the Adoption process in the UK

Post by Prawnster »

Hi, I have just had a failed IVF attempt but have a 3 year old son from second IVF attempt in 2004. We are probably going to use our last lot of savings for one more go and then if that doesn't work we are considering adoption. I am 38 and my husband 42, so we don't want to hang about and wondered how long the process takes and wether we would be able to get a baby through adoption.

Any experiences/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Adoption

Post by Swimchic »

Hi Prawnster,

My husband and I started going through the adoption process this year, but I fell pregnant which resulted in an ectopic pregnancy. I am having IVF next year. If that fails, we are going to start the adoption process again.

We contacted our local county council and went to an open evening. It was very interesting and very thought provoking. They told us that babies do not come up often and are in high demand as most people want babies. My husband and I discussed everything and then sent a form back to say that we wouldbe interested in adopting a child.

Social services then called us and then came to our home and we had a two hour interview. They were trying to get to know us and what our wants and needs were and about our problems. We passed the interview and were all set on going on an adoption course which is approx a week long, but that varies from one adoption team to another.

They wanted to know everything about us and did ask us things that we were surprised about. However, they were very nice and understood that we were very nervous!

The process does take a long time and I would recommend that you joined Adoption UK as they are a huge organisation who are full of information and support. They also send out a monthly magazine called "Children who wait". Its heartbreaking, but informative.

Be prepared to play phone tag with your social worker and it is very frustrating at times!!

I was adopted as a baby so have been on both sides of the fence. I think that its great that you are considering it. I have a wonderful family and am so blessed to have been chosen for them.

Good luck! :)

Thank you so much for all the information you have given me. I am sorry to hear that you suffered an ectopic - I have had 2 of those previously and know how upsetting it can be.

I am currently in the middle of doing an IVF cycle and think this will be the last attempt. However i am really encouraged by what you have said and do think it is a great opportunity to give a child a home.

I am prepared to undergo lots of questions and appreciate that it will be very personal. But i do understand it is all done in the best interests.

I really wish you luck with your IVF cycle and I am sending lots of positive luck your way.
