looks pretty extreme to me... the idea is not bad technically, but he goes far. Last year, our clinic started including antibiotics to any IVF cycle. FET, only mom takes it. Fresh cycle, mom and dad take it for 7 days. They want to prevent bacterias from infecting the embryos and interfere with either fertilisation or implantation. But this targets bacterias on the dad's penis (which might infect the collected sperm) and in the mom's vagina and cervix (which might be pushed past the cervix during ER and ET). It makes sense because a vagina's flora can be quite impressive, same for the penis. But no doctor talked about the uterus being infected by harmful bacterias that would require such extreme measures... if your uterus was infected, you'd have other symptoms!!!

My two cents.
1st and 2nd IVF = BFN 1st FET BFP! m/c at 7 weeks. 2nd FET BFP! 3rd FET BFN

antibiotics

Post by joanie74 »

When I started my first IVF cycle, the doctor did a culture and found Group A and B Streptococcus (doctor said this was caused from past pregnancy loss). These bacteria were all asymptomatic. He then followed up by giving my husband and I two courses of antibiotics which we took for 15 days each. So we took the Doxycycline for 15 days and it was another which I think was Amoxicillin for 15 days (30 days of antibiotics). Then he did another culture before starting the cycle. He also did a culture before my FET so basically he does a culture for bacteria before every cycle.

I happened to read a little bit about the intrauterine antibiotics and assume that is a way to eradicate harmful bacteria more permanently and quickly, but to be honest I am not sure. It is probably very expensive. If I were you, I would ask for a culture before each cycle. If he/she finds bacteria and you take meds for it and then become pregnant then make sure you get a culture while you are pregnant also (a couple of times if you can).

Hi -
I went to Dr. Toth 3 years ago. He is the most caring, gentle, intelligent and supportive doctor I have EVER known. He requests that prior to any visit that you provide him a full history (familial as well). He uses this information in his research as well as his treatment plan for you. At the first office visit is an U/S and then he takes a sample of the uterine lining which is cultured in his lab (there are about 5 labs in the country that can do the type of culturing his lab does so don't be fooled into thinking that your regular OB or even your RE can do it - almost all don't). He identified 3 bacteria - after my regular cultures by my OB had all come back negative - and planned my treatment accordingly. In August 2007 I transferred 2 5day blastos and gave birth to B/G twins in April 2008. It was the most amazing experience. I attribute my 12 year journey ending so happily to him.

When I got pregnant I called and told him. I then emailed pics when the twins were almost 2 months old. He sent a bouquet to my home and then called me a month later to ask when I was coming in to see him with the twins... He is amazing and I do "buy into" his beliefs behind the research afterall all this infertility and autism (I have an autistic teen) and ADHD all increased dramatically since the sexual revolution when people began "sharing bacteria" and babies have been developing in "contaminated" uteruses (many of us just don't know what we've picked up along the way)... Its up to you whether or not you decide to go but remember many bacteria are asymptomatic.

Hi 4thtry...

I DID do the whole 10 day treatment and immediately my periods became regular. I had NO trouble at all with taking that much antibiotic. I believe in his work and I believe that our "immunity" to antibiotics reverse themselves after not using them for a length of time (hence avoid too much use). I am from NY but now live in the central NJ/PA area. I used IVF New Jersey - they are really good...

Let me know what you decide...

Hi NY4thtry. You can learn more about Dr. Toth's protocol and his patients' experience with the antiboitics treatment @ FertilitySolution_TothPatients Yahoogroups: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Fe ... hPatients/ . Be sure check out the Files section for more information and resources. As far as the antibiotics regiment (CAPS treatment) goes, it is similar to the one some doctors are using to treat Chlamydia Pneumoniae patients. You can read the treatment handbook here: http://www.cpnhelp.org/?q=cpnbook

Personally, I think that Dr. Toth is the best and most caring doctor that DH and I know of. Before seeing DT, we never had a positive pregnancy test for over two years. After DT identified the bacteria, we conceived within six months after the CAPS treatment. Now we're the proud parents of a healthy two month old.

best wishes,
