treatment from a distance

Post by ava »

Is anyone else going thru the IVf process with a center that is not in their hometown and is quite a distance away? How is the process going and is it difficult working with a center out of town?

My clinic is in London which is about a 3 hour drive then tube for 45mins, I'm on my 2nd IVF cycle with the clinic and haven't found the distance a problem at all.
When I had my ET I booked a hotel for the night so I wasn't travelling a long distance but apart from that we travelled there and back in one day.
I think I went a total of 6 times to the clinic and i'm now in my 2ww

That's good to know. I live 12 hours from my clinic so its a bit nerve racking but I'm sure it will be fine once I start everything.

Hi ava,
best of luck with your upcoming cycle! We also have had to travel quite a distance to the clinics we've been to. The 1st clinic was the closest to us, but still 3 hours away, and we had a miserable experience there -- but we were so new at this, we didn't even know how many others were out there. We then travelled 5 hours to our next clinic, which we loved, but didn't get a BFP. We are having to move on to DE, which due to the laws where we live, means travelling once again, and still further away -- Luckily, our RE recommended a clinic and everything has been, so far, so good.

I think that choosing a clinic not only for its reputation, but also for the people who are taking care of you, can make a huge difference in your experience -- IVF can be such an emotional rollercoaster, I think it is important that you work with a clinic that at least gives you the impression that you matter to them as a patient, and not just a number.

Again, wishing you all the best! xx summer

Hi Summer- I definitely agree choosing a place with a good rep and great care is so important even if it means traveling. Its just a bit nerve racking knowing your so far away from the place providing you with care but it's manageable I'm sure. Thanks for the luck as I wish you as well!!!

I live in Chicago and did IVF in Colorado. There was some hassle at the beginning in terms of getting stuff from one clinic to the other (bloodwork, orders). Overall, I was surprised at how easy it was, though. And, when we did the actual procedure I think it helped to be away from home. We found a nice but inexpensive hotel and it was good to be away from the normal hassles of life.

Good luck!

I too am from RI, and I did not like my experience at all w/ either clinic that is in RI. One does everything in state while one has an office in state and you must travel an hour away to do any of the major stuff. I did hear about the place in Colorado as being a terrific place. However, I will not proceed mainly because I tapped out my insurance. I think travelling would be a good thing overall and I wish I could have done it. But there were 2 things stopping me.... One is that my husband is an attorney and it was tough enough to co-ordinate procedures w/ his schedule. He wouldn't be able to take the time off of work and it was a major hassle to co-ordinate stuff w/ him and to do it at a distance would have been just an added stress. Also, in our state and the state next door if you have insurance it's mandated that the insurance cover it anywhere from 80%-100% (we had RI insurance that covered it at 80%. Later it was out of Mass it was covered at 100%) so we were limited as to where we could go and still have it covered.

If you have some flexibility I would say it would be worth it to go to a good clinic
