My friend is pregnant with her first at 35 years. Her doc told her that if she doesn't go into labor on her own that they will induce her at 39 weeks b/c the placenta tends to deteriorate in an older mom.

I have not heard of that, but what I have heard, but I dont know if there is any medical truth to it or not, that if you are over 32 and its your first baby you have a greater chance in going early. So far with all of my friends this seems to be the case. Its not been drastic, anywhere from 1w-4w, although the oldest (42 w/first) went 7 weeks early.
Like I said, I dont know how much medical truth is behind this, but due to what I've seen and heard I plan to be ready (bags packed and all) 4 weeks b-4 EDD. You watch, I'll end up being 2 weeks late
No, I had my first child at 45 yr old and her gestational age is 39.3 weeks (4 days earlier than predicted due day). Water broke first followed by 29 h labor and then a c-section. My Ob never told me to induce early because that I am old.

I had my first child also @ 40. My OB/GYN never told me that he would have to induce me because of my age. I delivered vaginally which I'm thankful for. I was only induced at week 38 because I was experiencing really painful contractions 2-3 minutes apart and I was dilated 3-4 cm.
