Sorry for the curtailed story. The pediatrician came in and examined the baby and then the midwife came in and examined me...we are both fine! As predicted, the baby only wants to sleep right now. We spent 45 minutes trying to wake him up - stripped him down to a diaper and stretched his legs and such to get him to feed to no avail. The nurses warned us that they are really sleepy from ~ hour 12 to 24 hours.
He is still nameless (Maybe Andrew or Alaxander) and weighed 7 lb 6 oz and was 19 inches long.
Anyway, after the intrathecal the pain relief was immediate and the whole experience changed. I was happy and excited again and ready to go. They gave me Pitocin to increase the strength of my contractions. I started pushing before I could really feel contractions mostly because I could start to feel pressure in my pelvis and realized that pain would follow. I could feel the pain but not the help from my uterus. However, almost as soon as I started pushing his heart rate dropped too low and stayed there. The midwife called in the pediatrician and the surgon and since she really couldn't feel my contractions I just pushed as often as I could and the whole pushing process took 1/2 hour. It is weird because there isn't really any feedback when you are pushing except what the person delivering gives you until the head passes the bone...then you know something is coming. So - I did not have an extended crowning period 'do you want to feel the head' moment. There was an urgency that I could sense and it was all systems go. I did not go through so many months of craziness to lose the baby during delivery! I used my skeletal muscles quite a bit against the rails of the bed to give me leverage. The midwife said that helped pushing go so quickly. DH didn't have the opportunity to cut the cord because they wanted the baby to go to the ped right away...but when he came out screaming we suspected he was ok.
He breastfed like a champ last night and has gone to the bathroom. I am so totally wired that I have only been able to sleep 3 hours in the past 24. The nurses are upset about this and want me to take sleep meds tonight to speed my recovery before we go home tomorrow.

I agree with the nurses. Try to get some sleep! 3 hours in 24 is not a lot ... and your body needs to recover.
what is an intrathecal? and how is one diff than an epidural?
Michele,
I don't have a scheduled C section, remember I'm crazy enough to want to go through childbirth without drugs.. my dh and i are going to give it a try. My dad who is an anesthesiologist thinks I won't make it very far and urges me to get an epidural by 5cm - any later and he thinks it's more dangerous to give (he would know I guess, being a doctor, and few are there candid).
Anyway, we'll see what happens. But I hope labor comes early. Too bad my last appt nothing had changed since week 37. I am 100 percent effaced but no dilation. Good news is the baby is engaged and way down low.
As much as I think it will be tempting to want to get induced at next week's appt, I hope to be able to wait it out, even with the sciatica, even with the fact that this baby is big, huge, not small. I think s/he's already over 8 pounds and it's only week 38.
I hope the baby gets to choose his/her due date and pray that that will make my labor easier. Dare to dream...lostgirl
Me: 37 DH:40 TTC since 2005. First IVF cycle canceled. 2nd cycle BFP 1/11. DS arrived late 2008. 3rd cycle, U/s 3/7. Devastated. NO fetal pole or HB.
Lostgirl - an intrathecal (a shot that goes into the spinal space) is sometimes called a 'walking epidural' because it doesn't totally numb your lower half. The pain dissapears, but you can move your legs with difficulty. It wears off in 1-3 hours and must be done again if you require longer relief, unlike an epidural where a direct line is left in place to your spine. For me the intrathecal was mostly worn off when I decided to start pushing. I was thinking of your situation ...big baby and still a bunch of days to go - but aren't you like 6 feet tall? I would imagine that an 8lb baby for someone that is 5'2" is vastly different to deliver than someone that is 6' and you will be totally fine. The benefit (I'm told) of a bigger baby is that they don't need to eat as often and will sleep for longer periods of time much earlier. So...you will probably be totally fine and lucky in fact since I'm told that a 9lb baby doesn't have a significantly larger head than a 7 lb baby, but the heavier one sleeps better!
We are getting ready to head home. It is a little scary because we will be unsupervised. We are a good team though and DH is wonderful with the baby. We also have a bunch of friends with infants and toddlers that are ready and willing to answer questions.
I think everyone other than Doreen is a first-time mom and all I can say is that it is more than worth all the insanity it took for us to get to this point and all the agony of waiting those last few weeks. Hopefully I can still say that in a few days when my hormones are going nuts and I am weepy...but I think I will.
Melissa,
Ah a walking epidural! Yes, I had heard of that. Just not it's formal name
Good luck on your first unsupervised night. Keep those friends' numbers handy and I'm sure you'll both do fine.
As for me, yes I am 6'feet tall and usually quite lean (remember my ob-gyn told me to GAIN fat in order to help me sustain a pregnancy!), but I've got broad shoulders and apparently broad hips. The baby is already engaged and has been for days. He or she is way low. And my ob gyn says that's a good thing.
So bring on the dilation and let's get this show on the road! My mother in law vaginally delivered my husband who was over 10 pounds when he was born, so I hope I'll follow in her stead.
Only time will tell... Lostgirl

MLB -- Thanks for the update. Glad to hear that things are still going good. I am the only ones scheduled for a c-section out of the girls left to deliver. Yes I have three other children who are teenagers. One son who is 20, and two daughters 18 and 16. So Michaela has very big brothers and sisters. It all seems so new to me though because so much has changed and it's been a long time.
Cali and Elca -- Please keep us posted ladies. We are waiting for your great birth stories.
Lostgirl -- I'm sorta like you. I am ready but it's great to know that if Michaela doesn't come before the 19th that she will definately be here on the 19th. I can't wait.
We'll DH and I went baby shopping today for all of our final needed baby items. My family had a baby shower for me yesterday which was very nice. Many, Many gift cards which was really what we wanted so we could pick the things that we liked. That was my second shower because my job gave me one on the 21st of last month so I have a little bit of everything to last us forever. It was so fun just shopping for baby and not having to use a dime of your own money (hehe)!!! We have so much baby stuff that I doubt if Michaela will get to us it all. The good thing is that my nephew is expecting a little girl also around 9 Dec so whatever Michaela doesn't use or outgrows can always still go to good use.
This weeks plan is to get last minute house things together because next week DH starts paternity leave with me and we have some fun days planned together because we know when baby arrive those days may not come as often. We met with our child care provider last Thursday for when I go back to work in Dec and everything is good. I'm all set. Back to the doctors on Friday and another appointment on the 17th and than baby on the 19th. Michaela has dropped alot and I feel alot of pressure but nothing serious yet. My doc didn't even check me on Friday. I guess thats because I'm going c-section and he doesn't want to stir the pot if he doesn't have to.
Good luck to everybody. Will check in tomorrow to see how everyone is doing.

Our first unsupervised night was ok...of course he cried and was rather unconsolable for the first time since birth! I fed him 3 times in 2 hours and he would settle if we held him, but not if we put him down. We ended up giving him some formula which he didn't actually swallow much of - but he went to sleep and breastfed really well this morning at 5 and is sleeping now.
I just e-mailed a local friend a list of some things DH popped home for to bring back to the hospital that we didn't think to bring:
towels (hospital ones were tiny and scratchy b/c people stole the nicer ones)
Boppy - much easier than using pillows to prop the little one for feeding
eye mask - to help us sleep during the day
baby hat - the cute hand-knit ones the hospital gave kept falling off as his head is a little cone-shaped....
Doreen - wish I had some gift cards left as NOW there are a few more things I want from the store starting with a lamp that gives just enough light to allow us to change him and see to breastfeed but not so bright that it is too much for the adults. The little one doesn't seem to care one way or another....
I think that I am finally getting tired enough to sleep during the day. I have been SO excited that when I lay down my mind races. I had a little of that while pregnant too - but it is just so much more frustrating now that I know how much of that 2-3 am hour I will be awake for!
MLB -- You know that we bought one of those touch (push on and off) sorta lights that we just sit on our dresser. They run by batteries and give just enough light for what you need. We've just got our so don't know how often we'll have to replace batteries but we plan to only use it at night when needed for the baby so it might last a while.
We also bought this 7 1/2 watt light bulb from CVS and put it in our baby lamp and purchase like a lime green shade (color of baby decor) which was sorta thing and that doesn't give off as much light.
The good thing for me is that DH is off for 6 weeks so we can work with it a little before going back to work.
Elca & Caligirl -- You two have been MIA. Hope all is well.
Lostgirl -- Nothing yet for you either I guess. I am waiting patiently. I hope Michaela doesn't come before the 19th because I'm worried that she may be sorta small and I know every day that she is in there adds weight. Doc thought maybe 6 pounds but I am small and my belly is so full and hard that he couldn't feel it enough to get a good idea.
Good luck to all. Time is getting close.

I am not MIA, I am here with you and patiently awaiting my time. I am past my DD and still no signs of labor . I have NST tomorrow, and scheduled for induction on Thursday,
Oh Elca,
Sorry to hear your past due. I've heard a lot of tales of women going into labor the day before a scheduled induction, so i pray it happens for you.
As for me I am waiting too. My ob-gyn won't even talk about induction till week 40, which is fine with me. I heard that a baby can be fine inside until week 42 which is when the placenta may no longer be giving a baby adequate oxygen. So I'm not sure what I'll due if I'm past due.
The great news is I got a two day reprieve from sciatica this past Friday and Sat. so that gave me courage to deal if my pregnancy goes on. Lostgirl

Elca -- Good luck for tomorrow. I hope everything goes well. Let us know how things go as soon as you are up to posting. I'll be praying for you, DH and the new arrival.
As for me. I am waiting patiently for next Friday to arrive for the delivery of my little angel. We've been just working to get everything in order. Next week we have a few fun things planned so I can't wait until this week is done.
Lost girl -- I guess you are still just waitng on your little one to arrive also huh? Do you know what you are having?
CT -- How are things going with baby Ella. Hope all is well with you and that you and DH are adjusting comfortably to parenthood.
Good luck to everyone!!!

WashingtonDa,
I am still waiting. Patiently? Not so much. I really want the baby out. My husband will say sweet things, like you mean you really want to meet the baby? And I'll say, no I want the baby out!
Of course, I do want to meet my baby, but I think nature at this point gives mothers-to-be enough discomfort to make them super-motivated to go through labor. And that's what I feel right now. Super motivated to go thr labor pain, and push, and make this happen!
Too bad I cannot walk; otherwise I'd be walking miles daily in an effort to bring it on.
Yes, we decided to keep the baby's sex a surprise. At first I thought he was a boy, now I'm thinking girl for some reason.
How are you holding up? Lostgirl

elca- good luck tomorrow, just think, you are almost a mom! It is very exciting to think about. Keep us posted.
Lostgirl- I can understand being impatient at this point, and I give you props for waiting to find out the sex. DH and I could not wait, and at delivery, we just prayed everyone was right, or we would have a lot of pink and urple to return.
Washingtonda- Have fun next week, enjoy it! DH and I are adjusting well to parenthood. I am so glad he is home with me, and we have over a month more until he has to go back to work.
Ella is doing well. She is a bit more fussy at times now, but still sleeps alot, and her fussy is just to let us know when she is hungry. I am getting up twice a night with her, which isn't bad, but I am a bit tired. I know I was getting up while I was pregnant like 3 times a night to pee, but the difference is that I could go back to sleep in 3 minutes, now I have to stay up and feed and diaper for 45 minutes. But I am definitely not complaining, I know some babies cry all night long, and I am thankful she doesn';t do that. Since I get up at night, dh really does a lot during the day, like cooking, preparing bottles, dishes, laundry, grocery shopping, he does it all. He is awesome. I went with him the other night so he could get Ella's name tattooed on his arm. It looks great, and I can't wait to get mine with her name, but I have to wait until my swelling is completely gone.
I am glad everyone is doing well, and keep posting your updates...it is only a matter of time until you guys join me with newborns in your arms.
Talk to you soon!

Has anyone heard from Elca? I wonder how things went for her on Thursday and hope that everything went smoothly.
As for me, on Thursday I saw my ob and she liked how soft my cervix was and also said that my sciatica has improved because the baby has dropped even lower. She predicts that I'll be either a couple of days before or after my 9/19 due date, so that would be sometime next week.
I'm trying to be patient in case I go past due. But I'm starting to get awfully excited.
I finished work yesterday. They threw me a little goodbye party with these warm empanadas. It was touching. It's really hard for me to believe that I won't be going back there for six whole months. I've never spent that much time away from work... Ever. This is new terrain.
Today a friend of my dh has a wedding 40 min drive away. We are going because in fact it's near our hospital so I feel safe going. I am a bit worried about standing out though, since I don't really have fancy shoes that my swollen feet can fit into these days. My dh bought my crocs and ive been living in them.
Send news ! How are all our new mommies??
all the best, lostgirl
